Sounds like your views are very valid. But there is another aspect to this process. To provide a meaningful certification, they need to focus on what standards exist. In this area, they can server as a common thread to unite the various distros being created.
I personally support them for this reason. I believe it is good to have a professional orientation when programming for a living. If LPI can provide some validation, the community will benefit in the long term.
I know the feeling. I was a big Monty Python fan until I worked with a clueless System Admin person on a VMS system. It takes all the fun out of it when you meet a person in real life who thinks that way.
As another surprised participant in the friends and family program, I am seeing the IPO and stock issues in a new light. I still hold my 140 shares since I think part of investing is choosing companies that are worth supporting. But, I see how many people are focusing on the dollar signs.
I am also interested in how VA will weigh projects. How will VA avoid the traps that come along with worrying about the bottom line?
I did not see an investor relations link at the VA homepage like the one Redhat has. I hope this means VA will continue to support the community instead of chasing investor dollars;-)
This social security issue goes much further than just your credit report. I went to the local store and asked the sales clerk about this requirement. It seems to me that a federal law was passed years ago making it more difficult to extract this number.
I personally would not trust MS with piece of data. Has anyone signed up without yielding this item?

LinuxOne At It Again?

Seems logical to me. I first saw the announcement when I went to the Linux International site a few days ago. I remember the concern I had that linking to the announcement might be construed by a newbie as some sort of validation.
The moral, apply some filter in your scripts. Just because an announcement contains the word LINUX does not make it worthwhile;-)
Good insight. My Linux/GNU/X CD was bought at a computer flea market so perhaps I am one of the customers they think is interested in $500,000 of this new product. If they are still the good people you remember them to be, I would suggest it is time to be Open about their affiliation with LinuxOne.
Just in case they are counting on selling me one of those CDs, they might want to consider how things change. Today, I have a DSL connection to my ISP and that $5 CD becomes obsolete even faster in Internet Time;-)
You may be right about Most shareholder's reason for buying RHAT and LNUX. But neither of your two reasons.... apply in my case.
One of the unexpected consequences from the IPO craze has left me puzzled. How do you explain why a letter was sent to you? It is difficult to express my value system to someone who only sees the monetary reward. I actually found it easier to joke about losing $11,000 on that Thursday. A few people actually recognized the stock must have been worth more than that before it fell.
Too many people think about making money in the stock market and forget that it also is a place for investment. I seem to have some vague memories from school about it being the place where capital is put to productive use;-)
Is there a site keeping track of everyone who has been threatened with a suit? Now that people are finally recognizing what was going on, it might be informative to see how many threats were really issued.
Perhaps people would even be willing to post copies there.
I hope that "most slashdot readers" did not find this segment of the market to be a "revelation." I would rather call it Real-Time than appliances. If the kernel works great in an embedded environment, there is an infinite market out there with less stringent requirements. Some vendors make a good living just providing an environment that bridges these worlds. Having Linux as this common thread makes sense to me. I encourage the slashdot community to seek more of these revelations.
This thread is what/. is ALL ABOUT. I see many issues being addressed here and I am sure the value of people just browsing the subject is incalculable. The specifics of this topic are way over my head and I almost feel like I am polluting this discussion with my simple observations. I decided to reply here and perhaps the fans of that old IBM slogan will understand.
mwood set up the credibility argument with his reminder about how Mom talked about reputations. The credential comments seem like a lazy mans way to address this.
flatrbbtemphasized this again but left me some questions to ponder. I hope responses to those questions grows further.
I could go on-and-on but the point I wanted to make was how markedly different this discussion is. The AC group seems to be on vacation and I want to encourage more factual discussion about this. I am going back into learn mode so keep the good stuff coming.
I can see how the signal-to-noise ratio would drop from such articles, but would this traffic really test the system? I have not seen any comments about the different traffic patterns and how they impact the system. Are short "First Post" comments more of a strain than long dissertations? I can see why Rob might not want to talk about the weak areas of the system, but maybe he could suggest areas he wants to see heavily exercised.
Aside from that, the best an individual can do is use the new system in the same manner as the previous one and hope other people do likewise;-)
Give you a break? And what account should I address it to @microsoft.com?
Instead, I think it is more appropriate to give you the Eastwood "Legend in his own mind" award. If you really want to understand what is legendary at Microsoft, send out a good survey asking whether they are known for innovation or arrogance!
Microsoft started this whole affair. With all the former DEC employees they hired, Does anyone seriously think that an Alpha machine was unavailable? If Microsoft deliberately chose to use a machine that did does not use an Alpha cpu, I do not feel sorry for them. They made their choice, now let them live with it.
For my choice, I run Linux at home on my new AMD K6-III 450 toy.
Spending money on women can be a good thing. I bought a Dell Inspiron 7000 last November and boy did I get some! With some women, bigger is better. And when you bring home a 15-incher, the rest takes care of itself;-).
I wonder how many of these guys use SGI equipment. I also wonder if they read the details which seemed to spell out the distinction between Mips/Intel hardware. I have plenty of SGI hardware to play with and despite the great performance their stock has dropped from higher values of years gone by.
I see this as good news for SGI because a Linux community will strive to make their hardware look even better. This could be a wake up and smell the coffee situation as the Linux community works with systems that show the power of SGI graphics!
True! But design should be complete before production starts, and this is what they claim. It is just another link in the chain. For those who know which link they depend on, it gives you something to think about;-).

Too bad we cannot fast forward the clock to see what history will say about all this ;-)
Why not? The strength of Open Source comes from it's distributed and inclusive nature. VA could pioneer a new approach.
I am also interested in how VA will weigh projects. How will VA avoid the traps that come along with worrying about the bottom line?

I beg to differ, they never checked his reputation. It appears that they just assumed he had a good one since he was being quoted elsewhere.
Perhaps people would even be willing to post copies there.

Now to use this in the same manner as the previous generation.
Poor Intel. What a tragedy. I guess they will have to look for something new to manufacture on those fabs they built ;-).
Pardon me, but I thought the early FAQs suggested it "rhymes" with the way he pronounced his name!

Having graduated to AC status I can hardly wait to see what comes next.

I just like to see new announcements

And for the sequel, maybe he can sell everyone software that protects you from PC viruses (as long as you send him more money ;-)
