I'm pretty fucking sick of people saying things like this. Why does anyone believe things like it?
Uh, gee, I don't know. Maybe because it's fucking ABSOLUTELY TRUE? Espionage Act cases are tried before secret courts, and detainees in those cases are often held indefinitely under permanent gag orders. Even their own defense lawyers often aren't allowed to know the specifics of the case.
Throw out all that "fair and speedy trial" horseshit you learned back in school, Sandy. In the real world, thousands of people in the U.S. are held in indefinite detention every day with no fair trial in sight, no regular access to a lawyer, and no choice but to hope for a plea deal that might finally get them out for time served--even if they're completely innocent. And if the prosecutor or government doesn't want them talking to the press, they've under a permanent gag order too (so they can't even complain about it).
Thought that shit only happened in "evil commie" countries? Think again, Nancy.
Anyone remember the movie "Mystery Men"? One of the characters in that movie summed up my feelings on modern quantum physics pretty nicely. He was "Invisible Boy." But he could only become invisible when no one was looking (not even himself), and no cameras were on him. The second that anything that could actually verify his ability tried to do so, he became visible again. This led to the obvious question "How do you know you have this power at all?" to which he relied "Well, I just feel it."
Hundreds of people from dozens of countries and private companies have found some reason for spending the millions upon millions of dollars needed to get into space. So, clearly there is a market.
It was very expensive Cold War propaganda and military posturing during the "space race." Today, the government space "market" is mostly for PR value and political patronage.
Between serving the public's interest, and serving one's own interest at the expense of the public?
To me, whistleblowing becomes legal and acceptable the second the activity that you don't like crosses the line into clear violation of U.S. law and the U.S. Constitution. There is also a permissible gray area of public safety, where the activities involved may not technically be illegal, but could be a direct threat to public health or safety. But since Snowden's case is clearly the former category, there isn't even a gray area here.
It CANNOT be made illegal to publicly report illegal activities. Trying to argue that someone committed an illegal act by reporting ongoing illegal activities in a public forum makes a mockery of the entire justice system. And Snowden even tried to do the right thing by first going through proper channels. But once those proper authorities ignored him, they became accomplishes in the crime themselves, leaving him with only one legal and moral option.
I love science fiction and fantasy. Can I also imagine a bunch of hot, sexy vampire women who want to take me away from my bitch wife and fuck my brains out?
Yeah, I guess that would explain why there has been at least one person in orbit every year since the last moon shot, and why the ISS has been continuously occupied for nearly 14 years.
Are you saying that a private company did all that, or you no read so good?
The problem with most private commercial flight companies is that they usually end up serving exactly one customer: the U.S. Government. I don't think it's fair to characterize that as "private." The harsh fact is that, aside from satellite launches, there is pretty much no reason for any other entity to go into space.
Why stop at the moon? Elon Musk is so charismatic that I believe that Tesla now completely dominates the U.S. car market. And I also believe he could easily take us to other solar systems within the next decade, and that he is God's chosen prophet and I should do everything he says.
The problem with Valve is that they're a software company that seems to have no interest in doing any of the actual heavy lifting on hardware manufacturing. They seem to think of themselves as a Google releasing Android rather than a MS releasing the first Xbox.
The problem is that, unlike with Android, no one seems particularly interested in their platform--neither hardware manufacturers nor 3rd party developers. And Valve seems to lack the testicular fortitude to even support it full-on themselves. How many of *their own games* don't even have Linux ports yet? You can't go to other companies and ask them to take all the risks when you yourself seem lukewarm on your own project.
And I can't blame companies for not being interested. The lack of Linux titles is problematic, but not insurmountable (if you build it and it sells, they will come). The problem is that one of the core principals of the console is that it has specific hardware to design for. By trying to make their console a "platform" instead, they've stripped this away and created a rather bizarre console/PC hybrid platform that seems to have embraced the worst of both worlds. My PC allows me to play Windows games and mod said games. My PS4 lets me know that I can buy a game without worrying about whether I've got the right graphics card or adjusting sliders to get a decent frame rate. This SteamOS will offer the disadvantages of both the PC and console without the advantages of either.
Ever seen a guy repeatedly ask a girl out, who always says no, and have him not give it up? That's rape culture.
I'm going to need some parameters here. What is the number of times it's acceptable to ask a girl out before you become a rapist? And is there a time factor? Because if I asked a girl out in high school and she said no, and then I asked her out again 20 years later, am I still raping her?
It's not complicated to understand
Well, apparently it is. Because I have yet to hear anyone define someone who asked a girl out repeatedly as a rapist. Annoying? Certainly. Creepy? Quite possibly. Pathetic? Also a distinct possibility. Rapist? Nope, never heard that one.
No one likes hanging around "gross creepy dudes," not even other gross creepy dudes. This guy who Chu is talking about certainly wasn't being "allowed to thrive" by anyone. His own roommates didn't even like him.
I want to know where this "rape culture" is. Because I've lived a long time. I played high school football. I was in a college fraternity. And I've been around a lot of fellow nerdy computer programmers. And never ONCE was I in an environment where it was considered even REMOTELY acceptable to rape women or even seriously joke about it.
So maybe Mr. Chu can tell us where exactly where this "rape culture" is, because it sure as fuck isn't anywhere where I've ever been. But maybe he hangs with a different crowd.
The irony is that Chu is attacking nerds for stereotyping all women. But in the process, he's stereotyping all nerds.
Look Arthur, we're all really happy that you've got a GF who you think this stunt will impress. But throwing one group under the bus to stand up for another still results in just as many people getting hit by the bus.

If it's real "quantum entanglement," that should be not different than 3m or 1km.

"Didn't Captain Hero used to have a sidekick?"
"Yeah, but he disappeared after filing those sexual harassment charges."

Those are all either satellite launches or government/government-contractor launches.
I'll say it again. Aside from satellite launches, there is just no other reason for non-governmental entities to go into space right now.
Even so-called "space tourism" isn't really going into space, and certainly nowhere near LEO.
Yeah, I guess that would explain why there has been at least one person in orbit every year since the last moon shot, and why the ISS has been continuously occupied for nearly 14 years.

All praise him!

Wait, Valve makes games too??

Sigh, maybe 2015.
You forgot to say "Fuck Beta!" before you took your ball and went home.

....said a loser who now populates this site.
This is exactly the clueless response I expected when I responded to the submission.
The point. You have missed it. By a wide margin.
If they did, they sure as fuck knew that it wasn't acceptable to the rest of us.

I think Henry Rollins summed it up the best...
He usually does.

It just shows how stuck in the past Nintendo is.
This is a company that still thinks of online gaming as a passing fad that they need only embrace in the most half-hearted way possible.
