Working for a pretty respectable web firm, I've gotten to see what it can be like at dot-com ground zero. To be perfectly honest at times it can be kinda scary seeing as the industry's taking a weird turn lately. Eight months or so ago, we were almost beating people away with a stick there was so many potential clients. Money was pouring in, hiring was up, things looked pretty damn good. Fast forward to now... ugh, it's not as good as it used to be.
Been hearing alot of things lately like "retaining clients" - "long term relationships" - "site enhancement strategies" - etc. etc. Whereas before it was about "new business", "new clients"...
And now with companies like Razorfish laying off hordes of employees... who knows when it'll trickle down to mid-size companies. I'm thinking this industry is definately in the midst of a stabilization period.
What's the appeal ? Well, having just bought a copy of Suse 6.1 and installed it I can safely say that it's quite a packed distro. I haven't had to download a single thing yet to get it config'ed the way I want it to ( heh, except the newest kernel ). It's only slightly different from redhat actually with some of the rc files in diff places and other config files in diff places. But it's got RPM.. which makes things a bit easier if you ever have problems getting things to compile and dont feel like debugging others' code, which i certainly dont have the time to do.
So basically it's a complete distro... extremely up to date. HTH, joliveir @ hartford dot ee dee you

This story couldn't have come at a better time. I'm going through all this hassle _right now_:( !! I've been in contact with about 3 different headhunters in the past week, only one of which sounds like he knows what the hell nis+ or dhcp means.
It's more than frustrating... I've just graduated from college with a BS in CS, tons of experience, a stellar personality (trust me on this one;), and I still can't land a decent job in Boston yet!!?? what the.. ?! Dealing with middle-(wo)men is almost driving me nuts:\.
Well anyways, if anyone in the Boston area is reading this and has any decent paying positions for a unix geek/web designer/web programmer let me know;). Asking on/. might not be the most appropriate forum.. but hey, what the heck, might as well. -- joel
The 16th I graduate from my University with my COmp. Sci. degree, two nights later on the 18th I'll be waiting to sit down at midnight to see the one movie I've been anticipating since I was a child, I party a bit in bean-town, come home, party some more, repeat the party bit.
this has "iptables" now right? no more ipchains? wonderful ... just when i get the firewall rules on my gateway/router/NAT all set - this comes out.
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
...
how different is it ? how much more difficult? someone enlighten me?
I'm so used to :
echo 1 >
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -i eth1 -j MASQ
something new to figure out

The mp3's of the soundtrack are out and spreading like wildfire. Go to #slashdot on the /. irc network - irc.slashdot.org and ask around there.
