I too work in health care and it seems that the main reason my IT department likes outside vendors (and Microsoft) is because they can shift the responsibility (and blame) to someone else. SQL Server is broken? Blame Microsoft. An important application is broken? Blame the vendor.

That attitude really irks me, because things don't get fixed until several rounds of finger pointing between the the IT department, the app vendor and sometime the OS vendor. Sometimes the problem never gets fixed and the users have to continue to suffer. At least with open source you can attempt to D.I.Y...

No, this is America. Capitalist organisations (down to small schools) are free to do anything they like.
Actually if said school receives federal funding, then they are bound by the various rules and regulations that come with that funding (i.e., Title IX which mandates women's sports be treated on an equal footing with men's sports).

Most private schools do receive federal funding (at least on the University level) and they have to also follow various other federal laws, especially the non-discrimination, equal opportunity in hiring laws that arose out of the Civil Rights amendments. Otherwise it would be legal for private school owners to own slaves, which is against the law throughout the U.S. (excepting economic slavery, as poor people in the U.S. technically are wage slaves).

You are mistaken. Texas is NOT a Republican state. White Texans vote Republican but most Blacks and lots of Latinos vote Democratic. Since White voters are in the majority (for now ;-) it is true that the Republicans control Texas politically, but you would have to look really hard in some parts of heavily-Hispanic South Texas to find a Republican.

If you look at the exit polls from the last election, 91% of Blacks in Texas said they voted for Gore, while 54% of Hispanics voted for him. 73% of Whites voted for Bush.

A funny aside: for some inexplicable reason Bush the Lesser is popular with Texas Hispanics. That just goes to show that if you speak a little Spanish Latinos will vote for you in droves no matter how fucked up your policies are. You don't even have to speak Spanish well, as Bush manages to mangle Spanish much worse than he does the English language.

George W. Bush is known to be an intellectual lightweight, yet he is president. Minorities laugh at him because we know many minorities are much more qualified than the "First Idiot", yet they don't stand a chance at getting elected. Heck, we know *LOTS* of more qualified White people who would make a much better president than the "Human Eggplant" currently occupying the Oval Office.

I am trying to get promoted at work, yet I am having a hard time even though I have over 220 college hours and *LOTS* of computer experience. The only thing I can see is that is holding me back is that fact that I am Hispanic while the managment of the IT department where I work is 100% White. I see lots of less-qualified Whites get promoted over me, but nope, there is no racism or discrimination in the U.S. today.

The world would be a much better place if conservatives learned to think; however, that may be too much to ask for. At this point, I would settle for having them learn how to spell and use proper grammar and punctuation.

I think it is funny that I speak and write English much better than many White Americans, even though Spanish was my first language and English is the only language they have "learned" (and I use the term "learned" very loosely).
