    No they're not. The very trial in the subject line got lots of publicity both while it was on, and also after it was complete.

    The UK doesn't allow cameras in the courtroom, but in both juristicions unless the judge seals the testimony, then anyone can report on what went on in the court room or walk into the court and listen for themselves.

    I want to get my things my way yes, but I don't mind if you get your things your way too.

    I don't eat meat. I have several personal reasons for not wanting to. However, I don't want to stop other people from eating meat if you want to, because I recognize that my personal reasons obviously do not apply to others.

    For instance, when there was all the grumbling about the slashdot code about Rob saying it was almost GPLed, according to his FAQ, people jumped to his defence, saying that since he wasn't distributing it, he was excempt from that part of the GPL.

    Rob is the author of the slashdot code, and as such can do anything he wishes. The license is for others who wish to use or distribute the code.

    The first generation internet was build using NCP, and discussed in the early RFCs.

    TCP didn't replace NCP until the 1st of January 1983, about 14 years after the first packets flowed.

    I don't think 8-track currently consists of a medium customarily used for software interchange, and I've not heard of any written offer.

    You don't have to modify a GPLed program. If you distribute a GPLed program, you have to either source with the binary, or provide source on request at no more than a reasonable copying fee. This is Section 3, paragraphs a), b) and c).

    Not in any meaningful way.

    You'll find the odd site which has it's feed configured correctly, but the vast majority, including almost all ISPs, accept & distribute all articles they get.

    Fidonet used to cause all sorts of problems on usenet, due to badly configured gateways.

    Every so often, you'd go into a group, and find it's all full of duplicates, and all the duplicates were all with a message id from one address.

    This is actually happening now.

    Scientology is trying to prevent scientologists who have left the offical organization to practice their beliefs.

    This of course has nothing to do with the offical organization charging thousands and tens of thousands to practice, while the ex-scientologists charge very little.

    Why are you assuming that kids only want to play games or connect to the web? When I was 14, I was programming in several languages, designing databases and building systems. I imagine that a large percentage of /. people are under 18, including some Famous ones.

    In general it's not possible, however for the people who use IE 5, then every time you bookmark a page, it goes and tries to get favicon.ico from the server, in the same directory as the bookmarked page. So I get a hit in my logfile like this:

    209.207.224.40 - - [2/Feb/2000:13:33:59 -0500] "GET /pr0n/favicon.ico HTTP/1.1" 404 217

    I can track that IP address, and know who bookmarked the pr0n.

    Why would anyone want to add newlines, tabs or whitespace?

    Apart from some programs requiring white space in order to work (especially in printed strings), Sometimes it makes it prettier (This or This, you might need to view the source, as some browsers may reformat this on their rendered views).

    The biggest problem I have with python is the syntaxly signifiant indention.

    If you post a perl program on /., it works. If you post a python program on /., it fails.

    Indentation is important for readability, I'd consider a program badly written if it didn't have correct indentatation, but to to make it syntaxly significant is a mistake.

    Sure. Each time they release it, though, it does not change. How much "spontaneous evolution" does Win98 do once installed?

    Actually, quite a bit. Many programs install a new DLL which creates new APIs. Often these new DLLs expose bugs in other programs. This is one of the reasons why supporting a Windows system is a nightmare.

    Actually, plants breath O2 and exhale CO2 as well. They use the O2 to oxidise the sugars they produce as photosynthsis, pretty much the same as we do.

    If you want to kill a plant, then putting it in a O2 less atmosphere will do it much quicker than a CO2 less atmosphere, the difference between suffocating than starving.

    If carbon dioxide was primarily affected by natural processes, I'd expect it to stay fairly steady over a long period of time. However, in the last 250 years this has not been true. Since 1750 atmospheric CO2 has gradually increased from about 280ppmv to 366.70 ppmv in 1998.

    Up until 1750 it was the pattern I'd expect to see in a steady system, more or less steady with random variations about the mean.

    Unless you can give a reasonable explination for a steady increase since 1750 (When the industrial revolution dramatically increased the amount of fossil fuels being burnt), your theory doesn't hold up.
