  1. will response to congressmen be read? on SSSCA Hearing October 25th: Free Software Threatened · · Score: 2, Interesting

Now, with the recent threat of getting anthrax through the mail, will congressmen actually read their mail? We already know that they don't actually read email. So, now that snail mail may no longer be acknowledged, is there any way to communicate the people's wishes to congressmen?

  2. Vadem Clio form factor on Webpads, Anyone? · · Score: 1

I wish someone would make another tablet-type computer with the form factor of the now-defunct Vadem Clio -- with the ability to be used as a tablet with the touch screen, or as a laptop-type device with the keyboard.

Now that Vadem no longer makes these devices, perhaps some companies can purchase the patent/rights to produce devices (hopefully Linux capable) with this form factor.

Don't start crying just yet. There is an XMMS port at http://www.mnsi.net/~bgjenero/gforce/.

  4. Re:Sawfish. Finally. on Red Hat Linux 7 Released · · Score: 1

I agree Enlightenment 15.5 with GNOME was not the best experience. But, you've got to remember RedHat has been distributing really old versions of E all the way up to and including RH6.2 (and I don't know yet what version they are using for 7.0). The current version of E is 16.4. It's not Rasterman's fault that RedHat couldn't get its act together. E16.4 seems really snappy and stable. I've just decided to use E alone without GNOME, which for me, is a better solution than GNOME without E. If you haven't tried E recently (or only tried RH's old RPM), I'd recommend giving 16.4 a shot.

I'm not sure if RH had any intentional reasons for not including more recent versions of E (malicious or not). Is RH just slack, or do they still have an axe to grind with Raster...?

  5. Aiwa has one too for $350 on Is There A Market For A Voice Controlled MP3 Car Stereo? · · Score: 1

Aiwa has one coming out this summer also. You can read about it here: http://www.aiwa.com/Catalog00/Products2.asp?id=94

And mp3.com lists some information about it here:
    http://hardware.mp3.com/hardware/individual/car/ 2738.html

Yes, this is a CD-R/CD-RW model, and will not elimate the need to carry CD's, however you will need to carry far fewer. It is listed as retailing at US$350, which is really cheap.

  6. True transparency? on KDE 1.1.2 is out · · Score: 1

Is there any terminal applications that have true transparency? That is, if my xterm (rxvt, or whatever) is over netscape, I should be able to see what is in my Netscape window through the background of the xterm. Has anyone seen anything like this?

  7. Exactly... kids are being persecuted unnecessarily on Voices From The Hellmouth · · Score: 1

I don't think that many would disagree with you that these kids were not merely geeks, nerds, or outcasts that played Quake. There was something sick about these kids and Quake and the internet ain't it. But that's not the point. The point is, that kids who are outcasts already in schools are now subject to a whole new level of persecution and exclusion as a result of these killings and the media creating the Geek Profile. Here in Ohio, everyday there are new stories about kids that are suspended, expelled, and/or arrested for saying something as innocent as "I understand how this could happen" or wearing trenchcoats. It's ludicrous. Everyone is now on the hunt for kids that are outcasts. They were before this happened, but now it is at a whole new dangerous level. This is the tragedy that we are talking about today. I hated school. I did excellently in school. I am so thankful that I am now out of there. No one is comfortable in school. Everyone is looking to point out other's flaws to conceal their own. When I got out of school, I left my little po-dunk town to go to the city to go to college (a freaks paradise!). I loved it and never returned. I am so glad that I'm not there anymore and feel horribly for those there now that are getting pushed more into the dark and made to feel even smaller. For those in this situation now... just make it out... it gets better. Go somewhere where there are fellow freaks and it gets WAY better. doja PS. I think this thread seems to be slashdotting the slashdot.
