Slightly offtopic, but some have been mentioning the stability of MacOS... The days of of the hourly "Type 11 Error" are gone. With 8.x, The OS itself almost never crashes...the OS on my g3 has probably crashed less than 5 times in the past 3 months. Certain applications, however (read: NETSCAPE) will break sometimes, but that's not the OS's fault...
Ridiculous. What's wrong with programming at the CIA? Or what about information warfare with the Army? You might think these situations are unethical because of their military involvement, but most level-headed individuals realize such positions are needed in this day and age. Although I dislike what they do, virus writers are just as much "programmers" as the rest of us. Stop trying to regulate every aspect of life...
It's scary that people like Jon Katz have children. His daughter should be transferred to a nice foster home somewhere, and some professional therapy would probably help also. Does anyone doubt she grows up to be a screwed up little brat?
It's also scary Katz found someone who tolerates his views enough to marry him. Then again, if someone like him can find a wife, maybe my chances are better than I thought...

I don't deny that Whites are on the net much more than minorities. But Americans from minority/lower-income groups are increasingly joining ranks.
A couple months ago, I was in a computer superstore located in a fairly wealthy suburb. The place was *packed* with african-american families. The checkout lines were crowded, and most of them were buying the same thing: one of those "free" PCs you get after signing up for 2-3 years of net access.
Now, out of 10 inner-city kids who gets a new computer, a certain amount will use it just for games, another for mostly homework. But maybe 1 out of 10, or maybe 1 out of 20, will really get into the technology. I expect a new generation of minority programmers, coming from lower-class neighborhoods. And look who is doing it: corporatations. It doesn't take a government handout; Micro$oft realizes that giving free computers seeds future customers. Everyone wins.
OS is a great idea for older game technologies, or community game projects...it can aid newer game programmers in their learning and give a sizable group of people the power to craft a large, quality game. (You gotta good idea for a feature in SuperMagicTurboKiller? Add it yourself, dude!) But these days, commercial game competition is not "Our plot/design is better than theirs", but "Our engine/# of polygons/technology is better than theirs". Except for licensing...only a fool would give out a cutting-edge commercial game engine. Shareware/freeware projects, however, should flourish. Imagine a thousand linux hackers all working together on some funky new network hack n' slash.
uhh, get your facts straight about MMX/AltiVec. MMX died because developers had to go out of their way to support it. FWIU, AltiVec is more like a super-FPU that you don't need to specifically program for.
Dude, you can imagine how I feel.
I wanted to register my last name, but this computer company I've never heard of already has it. It totally stinks.
