IT peps regularly have to take on the roles of administering anything that uses electricity. audio/video, security (doors and cameras), telecom, you name it. "If it powers on then the IT guys should automatically be masters at using it, right?"
It's hard enough being just the desktop/systems/network engineer, as that job usually ropes in everything from IT purchasing manager, to software engineer, to web dev.
