When deciding where their next store location should be, McDonalds spends all kinds of money on market research. Then as soon as they settle on a new location, Burger King just plops one next door.

Is that illegal? Nope. Is it quite similar to this case? I personally think so.

In my mind, reverse engineering involves viewing something that one would not normally be able to view readily.

  6. REAL TIME!?!?!? on Final Fantasy At 2.5FPS · · Score: 1

  7. There is a real solution on Pop Up Advertising Continues to Suck · · Score: 4

I've clicked on more banner ads from Slashdot and oreilly.com than any other sites I currently visit. These sites cater directly to my demographic -- computer geeks who like toys and like to learn. Delivering such relevant advertising is worth lots of money to advertisers.

Some people don't like to hear this solution, but I truly think it works better than anything else proposed.

    USER REGISTRATION

Get web users to reveal some details about themselves. In return, offer them a quality web experience with non-intrusive advertisements that they may truly be interested in! And finally, give them an opportunity to change their profile easily, and allow them to opt-in (NOT OPT-OUT! Big difference) to other types of ads, like e-mails.

Web advertising is supposed to accomplish 3 things:
    - Strengthen their brand recognition
    - Drive traffic
    - Drive Internet sales

These goals cannot be met without targeting the people who may be interested in your product/service!

If someone has an ad for a new Asus P4 motherboard with SDRAM support or a special deal on that new Acura RSX Type-S, damnit I WANT TO SEE IT! However, I DO NOT want to see ads for baby diapers or Retirement Monthly.

  8. Skyscrapers SUCK! on Banner Ads Could Soon Be Bigger · · Score: 1

I (like most people) always have about 10-15 browser windows open with different things I'm working on.

I HATE it when I try to click on one browser window (to focus so I can use my crappy Microsoft scrolly thing) and I accidentally clicked on a skyscraper ad which hadn't rendered yet!!!

Although I'll take those ads over friggin pop-ups any day.

  9. Tough with college students... on Correlations Between Video Games And Academic Achievement? · · Score: 1

I did a somewhat similar study in college. I worked with a mixed group of 3-6 grade kids in an inner city school teaching them about computers and the Internet.

To make a long story short, I was able to conclusively show that computers have a very positive affect on classroom learning when properly worked into the curriculum. We even had a few special needs students who did better than the regular ed students -- The computers helped to focus their attention more than their classroom teachers ever could without them!

This is just an educated guess, but I would think that college students have already learned to focus (when they want to). :) So there goes that conclusion.

Your study is certainly valid, but you may need to get a very large sample population to help offset the different groups which may prove to be problematic to your study (creating outliers in your statistical analysis):

    - Students (educationally talented or not) who just play games all the time and do not take their education seriously. (My ex-roommate was unbelievably smart in electrical engineering, but he spent all day on MUDs and dropped out)

    - Students who just aren't that good at the type of game you decide to use in your study. I drive circles around lots of people in driving simulations, and I can frag pretty well in Quake and Delta Force LW. But, for some reason my friends kick my ass up, down, and sideways in Starcraft.

My only other suggestion is: Before you start, make sure you have a well-documented plan of exactly what you plan to prove (or disprove) and explain how you will test your subjects to truly show (in an unbiased way) the correlation between score in the game and grade in the class.

Good luck! Make sure you post and let us know how it goes!

I was at a Dave & Busters restaurant last Thursday in Providence, RI, and the waitress told me that they had just cleared a few tables for Metallica and Eve 6.. Eve 6 had just played an outdoor concert that night, and Metallica was in town. By the time we left, they still hadn't arrived.

I don't know what would have been funnier -- seeing Metallica ride up an escalator randomly in a mall, or seeing the looks on their faces after asking for their autographs... on a CD-R labeled Metallica MP3's.

And yeah, I'm with ya there. I can certainly notice a difference between the highest quality MP3 and a CD. It's not so easy to distinguish between a CD and the 24 bit 48khz files I use for digital recording, though. I just trust it. :)

  14. Enough complaining... on Web Server Comparisons · · Score: 1

    Let's do something about this!

Can we organize our own unbiased testing, disclosing hardware, OS, all configuration tweaks, patches, etc. and come up with a standard testing method that's doable with reasonably available hardware (that people have available at home or work)? Between all of us loyal readers, I'm sure we've got access to just about any configuration possible.

I'm not looking to determine which config can serve up 1 billion hits per second and 2 terabytes per minute here.. Let's just see where the loads/cpu times start to peak out, if we can establish that.

We all know the costs of most of the hardware and software, so we can make our own cost comparisons. I'm just really interested to see how the different platforms stack up. So far I'm really happy with our UltraSparc Solaris running NES, but I'd prefer Linux/Apache for development. I'd like to see some numbers on this, and I'd like to help generate them.

Slashdot isn't just a collection of links with funny polls.. The reader base is far too well educated and experienced for that. Let's get something accomplished!

Anyone have input on this, or am I asking too much?
