The Ron Paul votes not being initially counted is another matter. Most likely just an incidence of human error.
Where there's one instance of human error, I guarantee you there are others.
I was also seeing some reports yesterday of convicted felons counting votes, and people who had complaints against them about previous election irregularities.
If a person wanted to be sure, couldn't you burn a boot loader onto a CD, have the CD boot first, and have that direct the loading? IANLWK (I am no Linux Whiz Kid), but in my imperfect knowledge of the world, that seems like it would completely defend against this type of attack. I yearn for correction of my ways if this wouldn't work.
Or better yet, a USB key - an key that lets you start your computer. No key, no start. Faster than a CD, no moving parts, etc. Me likes.
Given that at least one other business entity has licensed 1-click from amazon (Apple, I don't know if there are others), I'd imagine that this is an attempt to keep that revenue stream open and flowing.
Given how much Amazon must've spent in legal fees over this thus far, they'd better be making a whole hell of a lot from the licensees to be making a profit.
To me, flash can be used in one of three ways, in decreasing amounts of popularity:
Nice rant, but you seem to fail to realize that the web, and computer software in general, tend to fall in the same sort of categories. That's just the way it is. Don't forget Sturgeon's Revelation, "90 percent of everything is crud." (Though I believe this estimate to be conservative, and certainly the adjective chosen is much more polite than is usually quoted.)
I'd rather have the possibility of having those few brilliant Flash-based sites/RIAs than to NOT have that ability at all. If you don't like the show, change the channel.
It'll also be nice it it handles transparent PNGs properly with nothing more than an <img> tag
IE7 already does. Mostly. At this point, I know only of some palette issues, but the alpha transparency is working at last. I'd be very surprised if they aren't able to quash the palette problem with IE8.
MS will finally realize what they've done to themselves as a platform company by not supporting web standards. "My apps don't work when I use IE, but they work fine when I use... ANYTHING ELSE."
I suspect something more along the lines of Adobe AIR or whatnot will be more in line with what people are willing to put up with as far as web-based technology apps go. I don't want to have to have a working net connection just to reread an email I already received, or work on a document, etc.
When I pay for something, I want tangible value for my money (and time is money). Your list, while helpful and probably spot on, demonstrates why Windows is unacceptable for me.
All good points, but what you don't seem to realize is that some of us don't have a choice in running or not running a certain OS. At work, I get to use what they give me. It's even partially locked-down to the point where I can't choose my own antivirus package, etc. Some stuff I can control, some stuff I can't. And the choice of overpriced Apple hardware is not exactly an option for many others, either, and OS X 10.5 (Apple, please pick a single numbering scheme) having security and *dataloss* issues isn't super encouraging to me. Pick what works and stick with it, I guess, but I've got my Win XP box to the point where it's more stable than my Win2k box ever was. Sometimes you just have to learn to make do with what you have.
How is a monopoly granted by the state any different than a monopoly put together one city at a time?
It isn't. I never said it was. Exclusive right to any part of a market, no matter how small, is wrong on a fundamental level, and actually goes against the idea of a free market. Where there is no competition, there IS no free market.
I've never heard of anyone else who had any performance problems with VLC, so I don't know what the deal is with my machine, but it's happened on other the other machine builds I've used, as well. It's not a big deal for me as I'm in the process of moving everything over to Linux anyway.
My key to stable OS: Use OS X 10.5 Load latest updates whenever released Dont hack anything in the system ??? Profit!!!!
Well, 10.*5* is perhaps not the best example in OS X-land to use for an example of a stable OS, from what I've been reading lately. Data-loss issues?! No thanks. It's pretty, though. Looks a bit like KDE4.:)
*THUMPTHUMP* *THUMPTHUMP*
Sadly, this hilarious joke will be too old a reference for most of you kids. *sigh*
Ethanol IS NOT the cure for our energy disease.
True, but mainly because there IS no 'one' cure.
Anyway, I see fuels such as Biodiesel and Ethanol as stepping stones to better technologies that aren't (yet) ready for primetime.
Yeah, but it's a helluva trick! There's something to be said for the right tool for the job.

That's hot.
...wait for XP SP3.
I'm holding out for Gamma-Ray.
I wouldn't - the other name for Gamma Ray is GreenRay: look what it did to Bruce Banner!
I've never had a slowdown problem after installing that HOSTS file. I even sped things up later by using a local DNS program called Treewalk.
Please do yourself a favour and download this HOSTS file:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
And use it. That domain has long since been blocked. Jeez, people. Old news.
"That's no planet."

Hurray!
:(
Is Amazon really this clueless, or are they just not in control of their lawyers? Are the lawyers just going after whatever they think is billable?
And does Amazon *really* think that what makes their site so appealing has *NOTHING* to do with 1-Click?
I really hate it when morons get rich; it just encourages the rest of them.

In other words, get over it.
So, should we go back to using
echo -e "GET / HTTP/1.1\nHost: slashdot.org\n\n" | netcat slashdot.org 80
Kinda sucks!
Eff that. Gopher's still going strong!

Its not april fools day, according to the snow outside.
Maybe the snow outside is part of an elaborate April Fools joke...
It's dead, Jim.

"Time-Warner Buys Ohio-Wide Cable Monopoly"
Why isn't somebody in jail over shit like this?
Like Mozilla did a few years ago, I expect that somebody will inevitably fork OpenOffice, and create a lightweight simplistic version of the suite
I'd love it if someone were to do that with Mozilla. That'd be awesome.

Some people have to for work purposes, like me.
