So the government has transferred what, $8 trillion or so from the "rich" to the "poor" since LBJ's Great Society and the percentage of poor has been unchanged. People act like the laws of economics are subject to human will. It is like holding a rock in your hand, wishing it to fly off into space, and acting shocked when it falls. Activities taxed are suppressed, activities subsidized are encouraged. A natural result of the welfare state is that there are more people on the dole.

How exactly does giving more $ to the bureaucracy help people allegedly harmed by air pollution? I say allegedly because I have been around quite a while and cannot identify a single day I ever missed work or had to go to the doctor because of dirty air. In fact, nobody in my extended network of family and friends seems to have had this happen. The only days we have poor air quality happen when the forests are on fire because logging has been essentially banned around here and the occasional winter inversion.

RR wrote that the biggest mistakes he ever made were in trusting that democrats (Tip O'Neil mainly) would keep their end of the bargain. In the tax increase deal, RR had a deal with then speaker Tip O'Neil that for every dollar of increased revenue, there would be $3 of tax cuts. Democrats double crossed him and there was only about $0.30 cents of tax cuts. The amnesty deal was supposed to result in border enforcement, which the democratic congress never funded. Bush could have enforced the border, but we were sold out by him too. If JFK were running for office now, championing tax cuts and promising to destroy communism, today's democrats would denounce him as a radical rightwing nutjob. And don't forget that under Reagan, top marginal tax rates decreased from 70% to 28%.
