  1. Samsung does something similar on Google's Best Perk — Transport · · Score: 1

they don't have as high-tech a system as Google but they do provide transportation.
Samsung's research centers are mostly based in Suwon, which is about an hour south from Seoul.
so, they provide buses in the mornings for people coming to work and in the evenings
for those leaving for not just Seoul, but other places near Suwon as well..

i should also say that this practice is also common with the other big companies in
    Korea (e.g. LG and Hyundai).

i have NEVER seen a BIOS update on Windows Update, and if you thought about it for a second, that makes a lot of sense.
also, this is not baseball where two out of three or better is good enough, so your four out of five argument is misleading at best.
if a service you want to sign up for requires your mailing address, your home phone, your office phone and someone else to contact
in case of an emergency, but on top of that they tack on your social security number for no apparent reason, would you volunteer that
information thinking "hey four out of five isn't that bad?". as far as privacy issues go, you should ask for what you need only, period.

  3. Re:Energy efficiency on New Larger TVs Favor LCD Over Plasma · · Score: 1

    1) LCD's power consumption is constant because of the backlight.
    2) PDP's power consumption is variable because it has no backlight, instead it depends on the images it is displaying. darker images consume very little power, brighter images consume more power.

just keep these two facts in mind.

as far as how the rating is done, i'm told that it is a white screen test, hence very advantageous to LCDs. for PDPs, a white screen test is the WORST possible scenario since that would represent maximum (or close to it) possible power consumption.

a more representative method would be to track power consumption during viewing, but even studies along those lines are controversial.
there have been several studies with conflicting results, some show LCDs consume less power, some show PDPs consume more power, and others show there isn't that much of a difference. if you dug deeper into the studies, the difference would probably come from the movie or show selected while the study was carried out. if you pick a movie with a lot of bright scenes, LCDs will come up ahead, and vice versa. my personal opinion is that the difference is probably not as large as marketing makes it out to be.

and for interest of full disclosure, i work for Samsung SDI, a company that makes PDP panels.

the regulation for Li-Ion batteries was passed before 9/11 happened.
ICAO the governing body for these kind of regulations pretty much said that
if Li-Ion batteries came into the picture after 9/11, it probably wouldn't have
    passed regulations.

MBC, the broadcasting station, that blew the whistle on the whole ethics issue with their PD Program, was also found guilty of coercing former associates of Dr Hwang into "confessing". this caused a huge uproar, and forced MBC to suspend their PD Program (they had scheduled a second part to their "investigation).

This does not change the fact that Dr Hwang's research may still be completely fake and unethical, but it's not as if MBC is squeaky clean either.

Yes, there are people who blindly believe that anti-Dr Hwang means you're unpatriotic but there's also a lot of people that aren't complete lemmings believe it or not. Let's not be so quick to judge a whole country shall we?

  6. let's clarify the facts and the speculations on Prime Human Cloning Researcher Humiliated · · Score: 1

    facts:
    1) some of the eggs used in his research were from his staff.
    2) he is resigning from all his public posts because of this.
    3) he will retain his position at Seoul National University and continue doing stem cell research.
    4) when these ethical breaches occured, no laws were in place yet (they were established this year AFAIK).
    5) he lied about not using ova from his staff when he was asked about it this year.

    the rest is speculation.
whether he coerced his staff or it was truly voluntary is an issue we'll never truly know.
whether he was lying to protect himself or his staff is a something we'll never truly know.
but i'm sure that won't stop some from making sweeping statements about the character of Dr Hwang.

and for the interest of full disclosure, i am korean and am currently residing in korea, so the "facts" i have posted here are from the local media here.

btw, regarding those who ask "how could he not know about the ova being donated", this is what Dr Hwang said:
"I am not a doctor, which means I cannot participate in the extraction process. I did not have any information on ova except for its serial number."
whether you believe him or not is up to you of course.

chuck klosterman on blogs (via ESPN's Page 2 columnist Sports Guy):

A term you hear people use a lot these days is "New Media," which really just means, "Electronic Media, Minus the Actual Reporting." This is what the Internet is, mostly. I constantly see all these media blogs that just link to conventional "Old Media" articles and pretend to comment upon them, but they add no information and no ideas. They just write, "Oh, look at this terribly archaic New York Times story. Isn't it pathetic?" But that sentiment is being expressed by someone who's never done an interview and has no tangible relationship to journalism. It all seems kind of uncreative.

it's not even the voice of the experts, just think about how blogs there are out there and how experts there really can be in this world.
