Actually, lots of people use a cellphone close to two hours a day (not me, I still refuse to get one - I have a CB (and a flare gun) in my car for emergencies, that's good enough). Think of the sales and marketing types who are running around, travelling, etc... The company picks up the bill for that phone, and it's more mobile than the one in the hotel room anyway. Waiting for a meeting - 5-10 quick minutes. Family calls you... etc. And now there's those ad campaign pushes to "Make your mobile phone your only phone".

I think it's alright - generally, the people who use mobile phones the most are the least likely to be missed if they all dissapeared. I just hope they don't take me out on the road (cellphone + driving = LOOK THE ext2fsck OUT!!!).

Less than a two minute call was $12. Scary... not that I had any other choices aside from "Excuse me, does somebody want to lend me a cellphone for a long-distance call?"... somebody would, but I'd feel like a total ass...

IE won't work... well, that's not quite fair. If I double click the 'e'... nothing... click on the 'e' next to the start button (before I delete that whole stupid thing)... nothing.

Open the 'My Computer' version of IE... works local or for windows shares. Type in a URL - Boom! gone. Right click on the 'e', choose open (instead of the default action). Opens to msn.com page. Whoo-hoo! But any change of URL (link, bookmark, or URL) blows up - gone...

Windows Update: Asks me how I want to connect (Internet Setup Wizard in a browser window?! It never did that before) (oh, yeah - the machine has been running networked for several days - everything else network-wise functions). Click on "I've already set it up, you moron!" - it blows up.

Ok, so I can't update IE or d/l Netscape (ok, I could use ftp, but I'm trying to be Joe Windows Luser for the example), since I can't surf, and I can't use windows update to try to fix any other files... (and now they aren't giving people CDs of windows to reinstall?!).

<Ctrl><Ctrl> 'B' <Enter> (KVM switch flips me to the Linux box - Netscape runs fine on there. So does Lynx. So does kfm (and soon, Konqueror)...

I'm still working the music club angles... The last few times I've bought CDs, I've paid ~$3-4 each, plus a (ever growing) ship^H^H^H^Hhandling charge (usually ~$2.50/cd). $7/CD is a heck of a lot better than the stores, but you don't get instant gratification (waiting for the sales, then waiting for the delivery). It's worth it, though, if you actually want the discs. I think I've been on this 'buy unlimited CDs at 2/3 off' deal for a while now... before that is was 'buy one at 1/2 price, get three free'... not too bad. Availability isn't always the best, but hey, you get a break. Flea markets and garage sales are the best place, but there, the selection is usually pretty thin "Oooh, the complete works of Neil Diamond on CD... I have a microwave just waiting for these!"

There are ways the average home (note: not the main problem) can save a watt or two here and there. The big problems are places like massive computer labs - tons of spindles, tubes, uProcs... and the fans and A/C to keep them all cool.
