>I mean a PI today is the same as a PII. They are both made by Intel, and have the same instruction set, but what do *you* mean by 'the same as'? Especially if you are talking about P/PMMX o/c'd vs P-II, I'd love to hear your explanation.
Well, one should be able to glom some of the code from a dual-alpha implementation. The bus is of that design, and the arbitration (not really a bus, it's supposed to be a switch) is ~the same. Not an exact copy, of course, but it could be a good lead for some of the framework...
The PowerPC 750 runs two 32 k 8-way set assoc L1 caches (data and instruction), and a 64 entry, 16 set, 4-way set assoc branch target instruction cache. The L2 control provided by the 750 is implemented with an on-chip 2-way set assoc. tag memory.
Of course, you can always use a 740 and provide your own L2 cache control... and I don't know exactly what Apple does, but the L1 remains the same.
Hmmm, that's pretty interesting. Probably about the same as people who can't chew gum and walk at the same time 8^) From what I've seen on the road, people who are holding a phone have one less hand to use when they start gesturing about their conversation, someone else's driving, etc... Would singing/talking in the car on a family trip be as bad or worse - there you might be conversing with more than one person. What separates a phone conversation from a conversation with a passenger, and why is it more dangerous?
If you can't talk and drive at the same time, nobody should be allowed in the car with you, and your radio should be ripped out, as not to distract your puny mind. Of course, you could still drive a NYC taxi (who don't use any of the above signalling methods, aside from the finger), but that's a special case...
As for the real topic, I still think gradiant brake lights wouldn't be a bad idea... of course, some people would take too long to process the information, and end up dead, but that's natural selection for ya (just kidding, folks). It's true, the more complicated you make the communication process between drivers, the more you have to rely on active thought, rather than automatic reation. "Now, I need to move my finger here to push this lever thingy" probably isn't going through a driver's head when they signal a turn, and if you are conciously thinking about the varying you are doing on the accelerator to maintain speed or whatever, you should have a 'student driver' sticker. They should be automatic. If you introduce communication that goes beyond simple extensions of the body, things will suffer.
And we already have a fairly successful way of communicating between vehicles... it's called CB radio. Cheaper than a cellphone, too (with some of the same driving concerns, I'm sure)...
Most of the time, they should, but when people troll, flame, or head off-topic at Score:1 or 2(+1 bonus), they should be hauled down. That's why I browse at 1, and sometimes 2. I would expect that the moderators do their job cleaning out the trash, so we don't all have to waste our time/bandwith on it. That's *far* more important than taking a post at '3' up to '5'... I can figure that out for myself.
Ummm.. linux already does run on IBM mainframes (read S/390). Check out the/. archives. The AS/400 isn't a mainframe, though some of the beefier boxes can get pretty fun.
As for AS/400 Linux... I can't tell you, or I'd have to kill you;-)
Oh great (A Tae-bo DVD?!?!)... now whattamIgonnado?
That's right - just have another Mountain Dew - the extra caffeine keeps me fidgeting all day... it more than makes up for the Tae-bo that I've missed out on;-)
Personally, I'd think one would benefit more from doing a real martial art, that has other benefits besides dripping sweat on the living room floor... Ultimate Frisbee is a martial art... right?!
anyone driving while talking on a cellphone should be shot. If it is a completely hands-free set, that's ok, but I nearly got killed by some dumb 18 yr old girl 'driving' a puke chartruse Cav while jawing away...
I've always liked the studies that compare the accident rates of cell-phone drivers to drunk drivers... and what about that town in (Ohio?) that outlawed driving and talking. That's the best.
State Troopers should pull people over for reckless endagerment and ticket them. Make our world a better place, and give me some laughs at the fools on the side of the road.
(That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it - you don't have to agree)
I've seen similar things... Some of the Verbaitum media I started out with about three or four years ago isn't reading very well anymore (and was pretty poorly put together, too). Those and a few other silver/blues that are getting older lose a file or two, it seems... My gold/gold Ricoh and HP media is doing great (some even older stuff)... I've read stats that say the gold/golds will last five times longer than the blue/green dye discs, but they usually say 10/50 years or 20/100 years.
As for comsic rays or strange radiation... <bzzzzappp>
Of course, you'd have to put in the second third and fourth cylinders... last time I looked under the hood of one of those little things, it only had one;-)
He can be stubborn, and often misses the mark, but this time he was stubborn with a purpose and actually did something 'right'. Unfortunately, he's talking to people who don't care about his side of the argument - it isn't a buisness argument, so it doesn't concern them. They made the usual token efforts, and he continues to be stubborn.
I rarely agree with Katz and dislike most of the wasteful tripe he has written, but if you've ever looked into this company and this program, you should be a little concerned... at least *someone* is talking ot them (though I wouldn't have sent *him*)...
>grab a list of all the jocks and football players... Shoot, where does that leave some of us? I was on a few varsity teams in H.S. (school of 400, you get to do a lot of things), and had all of the necessary academic achievements (SAT/AP/etc) to end up with an honors degree in Engineering a little later and make my way into a comfortable room here in IBM. A friend of mine was all-conference in wresting, track and football, not to mention second in our class and ended up at Princeton... Where's your logic?
Wait? You played with Linux and played sports in high school?! That's not possible!
... most ISPs have clauses in their TOS agreements. 'We reserve the right to not host any.... blah blah.... and we might just stick skewers into your eyes, so don't put innapropriate material on our servers (we have a separate service contract for those sites;-).'
Get yourself a Matrox G200 or 400... the visual clarity is amazing, and the 2D accel is better than any other card (especially under NT, but still fast in X). I have a G200 Millenium II, which replaced a Millenium I, which was still clearer and faster in 2D than my TNT...
Here in MN (at IBM), a starting engineering salary let me buy a nice starter house (4 BR, 2 bath, just over $100k, little/no crime in the neighborhood) after only a few months working. Where you live is your choice. I'll probably build a new place a few years down the road on 3/4 acres. Might cost me over $200k 8^D
My friends in SanFran and Boston won't be buying anytime soon, but I've got a spare room for 'em if they drop by 8^)
Hehe - yeah, if you wany a *real* hand warmer that you need to plug into an outlet or cig lighter 8^D
Ouch!

Yeah, there's a lot of people on the road who aren't safe, with or without cell phones... they just have a lot of potential to exacerbate the problem.
:)
I recently moved. It more than doubled my commute time. It now can take me over 5 minutes to drive to work

If you turn people in, you should get a $25 kick-back ;-)
Of course, you might need to use a cell-phone to call the police, but you'd pull over first... wouldn't you?

BWP was worse... it's right there on my list with Howard the Duck - movies that the producers should send me money for, since they wasted my time.
hehe - that's why I don't own a VHS player...
:)
it also stops me from buying Tae-bo and 8 minute abs on a whim

CYA is the name of the game.

1) Don't do that, it's not nice 8^) floppy discs/backup tapes never responded well, either
2) We have bigger problems than losing 'instant-on' function... (plus the time on this is...)
3) Same thing that happens when lightning hits anything else. Hope it's under warantee.
>I just can't wait until some 15 year old comes up with a 100:1 compression algorithm
;-)
Its been done - it's dynamically compressed to hell (total crap)... of course that doesn't affect a lot of music anymore
Where did you pull that 112 kbit from?! It wasn't mentioned in the previous post?
He *did* mention a 1:12 compression, which is, of course, completely different.
'Clustered' in this case is, of course, just a shortened derivative of the real term - cluster-fscked (edited for TV)...
