Does anyone know how, in Mandrake 8.1, one can make konqueror open say, a.avi file, with mplayer *but* without opening a new instance of mplayer. For exmample, I have a creed video playing right now, if I were to click on a different video, konq will open up a new instance of mplayer which doesn't work. Any hints?
You know what. Bullshit. I'm sorry - I see this comment all the time and in all the time that I've been using windows I have *never* had a problem with my.dlls. This includes a win2k machine in heavy use every day, 7 days a week, for 2 years without a reload. And you know what? It ran just fine...
Ok, don't get me wrong. I love linux just as much as everyone else here does, I use it all day long at work, by choice. But I must say that installing software, in general, is a pain in the ass. Am I blaming anyone? no. Is microsoft the answer? no. But they sure as hell do have the installation part down pat.
"I say tough beans: If you get infected, it's your responsibility to get yourself cleaned up. "
I think the huge underlying problem is that a) people do *not* know their box is infected and b) if they do know, they have no idea what to do about it. Don't forget, most people are very timid and lack any basic knowledge regarding computers. All they know how to do, is double click on the word2k icon, or outlook, or whatnot.
If you are feeling really ambitious and would like to learn even more than from slackware, try buildiner your own distribution. Now that would teach you a lot. Perhaps more than you are interested in, but I figure someone out there would be.
If you are serious abot trying to "learn" linux - then nothing will teach you as much as slackware. Check it out at slackware.com. It might not be the easiest, but you will know a hell of a lot more about the way linux works after installing slackware, rather than redhat or mandrake.
While the Code Red virus has been spreding rapidly, in part due to all those Windows 2000 users on cable modems, I think this idea of "fixing" everyone's computer is a really really bad one.
By connecting to someone elses computer, and running code on it without their permision you are in fact committing an illegal activity. I think a much better idea would be to politely inform the machines' owners that their server is infected. Also providing a link to the patch.
Any unauthorized access is scary. Remember that worm a while back that went around and "fixed" unix systems by patching holes? Remember the outcry about how no one would want that because it was "Their" server and whatnot. Same thing applies here.
I think you misunderstand branch prediction. Now I don't claim to be an expert on cpu architecture or branch prediction. But from my understanding, it is kinda silly to compare opening files etc to branch prediction. If a cpu encounters a failed branch prediction the user would never notice this. It merely means that the failed instruction would have to be rerun through the cpu. This would slow things down for the cpu, but for the end user this wouldn't be noticeable at all. Considering that a cpu has millions of instructions runnning through it at all times, a few missed ones aren't going to be noticed. Of course 100 % branch prediction would be nice, but so would an internal combustion engine with 100 % efficiency.
"No more one handed game play" - I don't think any new device could prevent "one handed game play" if you know what I mean.... Jeez, talk about "lcd smear"...
Speaking of the weather... Here in the Boston MA area we've had some pretty damn incredibly thunderstorms in the past few weeks. Now I realize, thunder storms are a natural occurance etc. However, these went on for about four hours or so. And the crazy part is, there was non-stop lightning for that same amount of time. By non-stop I mean a lightning bolt every 2 or 3 seconds or so. It was truly impressive to watch, but also made me wonder. In my 22 years of existance I've never once seen a storm quite like these - are these preliminary signs of global warming, or just a freak storm?
I noticed they mentioned MIPS - Which leads me to a question... What other options of OS do I have on an SGI Indy? This debian announcement leads me to believe that debian is now installable on it? What would be the pros and cons of debian linux vs SGI's IRIX?
Tool - Lateralus is an awesome cd. As is....
Radiohead's Kid A. As is.... Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory. I could go on and on. The thing is, I agree that there is a *lot* of crap out there, but don't forget about the few good bands left who make music for the sake of making music, not the money.

buildiner is of course, building. perhaps I shouldn't post on slashdot after helping polish off a 12-pack of corona :-)

The Pentium 4 is, by Intel, considered to have "Hyper pipelined technology."
I can see the ads now..... "The Pentium 4 - Because our Pipline is bigger than theirs!

Heh, as far as I am concerned, if you want em, you can have em.
