It's nice to see RedHat a) start making some money and b) starting to expand their efforts. However I fail to see who they are targeting this at... It seems to me, from my experience in the field, that if some company x wants a database storage solution, for something important, they will go with oracle. Home users on the other hand have long since been using mysql and postgres. I guess we'll just have to wait for the benchmarks because we all know how useful those are.
"In a closed source environment, there isn't always a hierarchy for decision making. Everyone must agree so that all the programmers are on the same page. Well, not everyone always agrees.
"
I assume that was supposed to be "In an open source environment...."?
But it's still a decision though. It lets people get on with the work. One just has to hope thatultimately the people you work for are making the right decisions, or, if you are the one making the decisions, be sure to take all points into consideration.
Bear with me moderators, not trying to post flamebait....
Anyways - to me, his resignation shows an inherent flaw in the open source, or bazaar, type development environment. With closed source software one has to realize that most of the programmers, coordinators, graphics artists and whatnot are there because a) they hopefulyl want to be, b) they are paid to be there, and c) if they don't show up then they won't get paid and possibly fired. For many getting fired is not an option as they have families to support. This also requires them to listen to the people organizing things (good and bad, depending on which marketing idiots were hired).
However it seems that with open-source, since everything is on a volunteer basis (well ok, not everything...), there tends to be ego's going unchecked in multiple areas, leading to huge "wars" regarding issues, that, in a "normal" company would've been squelched by a single individual's decision.
It mentions that the company is considering legal action against the senders of the virus/worm. However later on it mentions that if your phone is sending any unwanted e-mails to hit the clear button - if the worm spreads like a tradiotnal worm does it seems that original senders might be hard to find.
It seems to me that dll's are both a blessing and a curse for windows. I've always found that installing software on windows tends to be much, much simpler than on linux. For example, say you want to install program x on a windows machine. Typically what is required is running some type of setup.exe file, and the rest is taken care of. On the other hand, in Linux (Redhat for this example) one may download the rpm, only to find that many other rpm's are required. Upon trying to install those rpms, one finds out that each new rpm requires others... It gets freakin annoying as hell. Is the doze approach better? Probably not. I mean, I hate having my win\system folder filled with crap that I no longer need after uninstalling a program. But at the same time, I know that installing a new program isn't going to take more than 5 mins or so. Keep in mind that I'm a redhat/mandrake kinda guy, so apt-get isn't too helpfull for me. Surely there must be a more elegant solution?
I've seen that page but thanks for the link:-) I guess what I'm asking is a little "hands on" experience - I figure someone out there in slashdot land must own one of these babies......
Anyways - now we are on the topic of monitors - has anyone in the slashdot crowd had any experience with the sgi flatscreen monitor? http://www.sgi.com/flatpanel/ - I am very interested in picking one up.... but I am running Windows 2000 and am not to sure of support for it / video cards? Anyone able to shed some light on how good / incompatible this sexy monitor is?
By no means was I try to imply that mac-addicts are mindless zeolots:-) There are plenty of things in my life that i've bought, which while I could've gotten the same basic thing for a lesser price, I went for the more expensive item "just because I liked it more".
It seems that the PC comes out on top when compared to apple. However did anyone really expect anything else? It always suprises me when people bring up apple's quotes (super computer, faster than a p3 etc.) What do you expect them to say? "Well our G4 is slower than the other new chips out there but costs more! Please place orders here!" I mean come on. The one thing that apple has going for them is their incredibly loyal userbase. My accounting professor uses Macs. I have gone over the benefits of PC's many many times with him. And on a lot of points he agrees that the PC is better.
He just bought a titanium powerbook.
'nuff said.
Although that cinema display is super slick (as it should be for its price tag...).
Or is it kinda pointless to run these games on an emulator - for me the whole thing about game boy's is that you can take them with you! Isn't that what one buys them for?
Ok ok, it's nice that it'll be smaller. What I want to know is what kind of heat is this generating? Sure the chip is half the size. But if the heatsink/fan? I mean the fact that a Pentium 4 requires a frickin heatsink that has to be attach to the case else it would rip the chip out is pretty damn silly. As has been mentioned before it's ultimately not the Mhz / Ghz that counts for raw performance. While I understand AMD and Intel's constant push for higher Mhz I think people need to be aware (by people I mean Joe Consumer) that there are other issues that are becoming much more important than the cpu. Graphics card... Hard drive speed / interface.
1. Thousands of accidents related to cell phones. What is it about a cell phone that makes people think they should navigate along the highway with one hand on their phone, while the other desperately tries to steer, shift geers, drink the coffee, changes the radio station.
2. Many many hours of enjoyment in a cell-phone free movie theatre. Ok ok, so you forgot to turn your cell off in the theatre. What makes you think that in the case it does ring, you should answer it and talk? jeez.
The list goes on. While I think cell phones have their place in modern society it seems to me that they have become more of a fashion statement than a functional device. Just go to your local mall and take a look at the various cell phone accesory sites.
I think one of the funnier moments I had related to cell phones was on a trip to france. I got off the plane and was walking down the ramp, while the person next to me, who had immediately turned on their phone as soon as they got off was saying something to the effect of (french isn't too good) "I'm here I just got off the plane.... Oh good you're waiting for me right outside the ramp". Is it really necesary? I dunno. Maybe it's just cuz I hate the phone in general.
Here's a clickable Link for those too lazy to cut and paste. I can imagine the pictures now, "She was feeling very damp at the prospect of a full rack of those monsters..."
Oh just shut up about the whole X-windows thing. Ok so know we all know what it is "supposed to be called". Great. Did you know what he was talking about? Yes. Was it unclear to anyone? I don't think so. So who cares anymore?
You know I find that comment regarding the stability of X v4 rather amusing. I have tried to upgrade to v4 several times now, on a Diamond Multimedia 2000 Pro (?) and a VooDoo Rush (With ATI 2d chipset) - and both times during the Mandrake-7.2 install I get a complete freeze??? WTF? Aren't we supposed to be making progress here? Both cards work fine in v3....
Interesing move....

Why anything written by Jon Katz of course..... not!
But it's still a decision though. It lets people get on with the work. One just has to hope thatultimately the people you work for are making the right decisions, or, if you are the one making the decisions, be sure to take all points into consideration.

And I'm sure that you, at 17, know everything.

Jiga what? Jiga who?
So if it's sitting around doing nothing and i am interested in one..... ;-)

yeah yeah - I know - offtopic - moderators act accordingly.

Pretty damn small chip though
Heh. That didn't even occur to me :-) Indeed, go to your local cell phone accersory "store". :-)

Grapje, bedankt.
How the hell is this informative?

I think those people over at http://unixsex.com/ must be getting pretty hot and bothered at the prospect of such a cheap date.....
