  1. Cycles of book burning? on House Might Mandate Net filtering in Libraries · · Score: 2
If they limit it to porn, we can't complain that much - it's not like schools and libraries currently allow children access to porn of any sort. (Unless you count the adult romance novels in public libraries.)

It's like we've been time-warped back to the 50s, though, where no one minded a little book-burning, should the occasion present itself. Except this time, it's the Internet.

I would ask "Why are they so afraid of information?" but we all know the answer to that. Is this some kind of breaking point we're going to keep hitting as time goes on? Will our horizons keep expanding so fast we can't keep up with it, until finally a minor cultural revolution takes place, breaks the dam and we start the process of filling the reservoir all over again?

TV comes along, and suddenly a generation is exposed to ideas and information they never would have had otherwise. The result was the 60s and 70s, where the adults struck out in fear of the unknown and the lack of control inherent in the new information age.We just started evening out again in the 80s. Are we encountering the same issue with the Internet in the 90s, to come to a head in the 00s?

Maybe with the rapid technological turnaround time we now have, with new development "generations" getting shorter and shorter, we'll get to the point where none of us can slow down enough to fear change, because we all remember a big advance that changed the culture from our own youths...

  2. What about St. Leibowitz? on Patron Saint of the Internet · · Score: 1

Sign me up. I was just thinking of posting something similar. Even if it's just a mailing list from a free site - somewhere the geek kids can get support from those who are in the trenches with them and those who have been through it and can help point the way.

In fact, a mailing list might be a good way to get some site coordination started. Point me in a direction, Mr. Coordinator. :-)

  4. The Dysfunctional Family Circus on Generative Quickies · · Score: 1

    *whacks Royster upside the head*

Don't do that, folks. spinn re-routed the incoming slashdot traffic to his archives, which are on a bigger pipe and where he doesn't get charged for the bandwidth. You'll still get to see the Dysfunctional Family Circus, and spinn doesn't go broke. If you like the place enough to stick around, the regular pages will be back in place soon.

  5. The Weaker Sex on Slashdot LinuxWorld Awards · · Score: 1

Women like to see attractive sales guys, too. But in an industry like ours, I doubt the vendors even worry about accomodating women and their tastes/preferences.

I went to LISA97 and the Network Appliance booth was apparently catered by the staff from Hooters, in short shorts and tight T-shirts. It gave me an oily, creepy feeling. Did they expect the women admins to plant a Hooter girl in their laps as well or what?

I *am* tempted to play lesbian for a night next time and make them have one of their chickies spend the evening freshening my drink and sitting on my lap, just to make the point.

  6. Rushmore kicks ass on "Rushmore" and The Rise Of Geek Cinema · · Score: 1

Maybe you couldn't tell where the movie was going, but it was blatantly obvious to me. The soundtrack is the only thing that saved it in some spots. That, and just as you were ready to fall asleep. something highly amusing would happen.

Granted, the funny bits were very good. But it was otherwise completely predictable every step of the way, had huge boring sections and Max was very unlikeable. I sure as hell wouldn't recommend the movie to a friend - The soundtrack, maybe, or a cheap matinee or bargan rental...

But the Dysfunctional Family Circus is hilarious....
