  1. Personal Kanban on Ask Slashdot: Life Organization With Free Software? · · Score: 1

Have you considered using a personal Kanban board? I tried a number of personal organization system including GTD before I finally settled into a personal Kanban board (it is even simpler than GTD in my opinion). You can user whatever you like to implement it, I set up a board using kanbanflow.com and it has been good so far but you could easily use a notebook and post-its to do the same thing. The book 'Personal Kanban: Mapping Work | Navigating Life' - http://www.amazon.com/Personal-Kanban-Mapping-Work-Navigating/dp/1453802266 helped me get started, and so far it is working for me but your mileage may vary.

I am pretty sure the Unity Game development platform (http://unity3d.com/) is .Net based and uses Mono to run on iOS and Android. This is a nice game development tool made cross platform by Mono, so I would say Mono qualifies as useful. I am sure there are other examples.

  3. Could be a step in the right direction on Google Used To Diagnose Disease · · Score: 2, Insightful

I read an article about eight years ago about an expert system written in Prolog that allowed doctors to select a list of symptoms, it would then ask about additional symptoms and then return a list of likely conditions. It apparently had a very high degree of accuracy (I think it was in the low 90's), and was vehemently rejected by the majority of doctors.

Hopefully the next generation of doctors will be so use to using internet search engines, that they won't feel threatened by a tool designed to help them diagnose a patient, not to replace doctors.

Funny, we had twins (Girl/Boy) little over a year ago, during the pregnancy we had ultrasounds about every 4 weeks, which I would copy and send to my mom and dad. At about 5 months along, I asked my mom if she had watched the ultrasounds, she said no because my dad had disconnected the VCR, and didn't want to go thru the hassle of hooking it back up. Grrrr... Spent the next day creating a DVD... never asked if she had watch it...

Good luck with the twins, we both wanted to jump off a bridge after the first 3 months, but it gets better. They are 13 months now and are actually fun when they are not screaming their heads off ;)

I guess the good news is that any patents should be long expired.

I have never been asked to write a back door, but I have been asked write code to covertly send us reports about how the customer is using our software. The motovation behind this is that our software (Health Care) is price based on the 'number of lives' covered by our system.

My response was that I could do this, but that I thought that doing this without notfying the customer that it was being done was wrong. Stangely enough they did not argue with me, and as far as I know it has not been done.

My understanding is that for most films, more money is made on from video/dvd than the theater relase. 4/5ths sticks in my mind for some reason. Seems like a good idea to release while the hype is sill going on.
I went to see LotR 2 weeks ago and the showing was sold out, given that it has been out for 3 months, thats impressive.

  9. Bought it 3 weeks ago on gobeProductive 3.0 - Office XP killer? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I bought this about 3 weeks ago after seeing it posted on osnews.com, and so far I really like it. Keep in mind I am far from a Office suite power user. The things that attracted it me to were: the positive reviews, the ability to save as a pdf, the fact that I can get the linux version when it is finished, and the license which absolutely clinched it for me.

I think it is important to support companies that you feel are doing a good thing. I could have just used a copy of MS Office from the MSDN Subscription that my job provides, but I decided that I should buy this product to support the company. I am at a point in my life where I find it hard to justify pirating things anymore. I want the product, I have the money, I buy the product. I do understand pirating when you don't have the money to buy software you need learn a skill (some would argue if you can't afford it, you shouldn't use it), I wouldn't be where I am today if I was not able to do this in the past. But I don't know if most people are able to weene themselves.

Wondered a bit topic, oh well...

  10. Re:LinkSys... on Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) Switches · · Score: 1

I have used a 2 port LinkSys for about 6 months and it works very well. However, I dont think they make these, as Ive seen the same 'box' from at least 2 other companies (Hawking comes to mind) with just different color cases. What is nice is that these come with all cables and I paid less then $80 with shipping from BuyComp (www.buycomp.com). I would avoid any manual (mechanical) switches, as the 2 I tried screwed up the mouse, and the video suck at anything other than just text.

  11. Hardware Devices on Ask Slashdot: IP Masquerading Drawbacks? · · Score: 1

I started with a proxy and used it until my wife complained that she could play certain internet games, and I could not figure out to fix it (and really was annoyed at having to try). After that I tried a number of windows programs that do NAT and found a couple that worked well (WinRoute, SyGate). I heard somewhere (and it may be wrong, that NAT1000 was bought by M$).
As of now I used a little blue box from Hawking Technology that works well for me (it supports 2 modems, ISDN, or leased lines). When I can get cable or ADSL I will go back to a PC again. Anyways this box (IR8228 I think) has worked well, although it doesn't like to disconnect for inactivity and I don't mind that. My friend just got another model (IR560) and after flash upgrading the firmware it seems to be working fine (wouldn't work with the game Everquest before flashing). The only reason I mention these devices is that you can get them pretty cheap at ONSALE the "at cost" section. A caution though, I have sent a couple of emails to their Tech Support, and have never gotten a reply (I was trying to figure out the disconnet issue).

In any case, hope this is at least interesting.
