  1. Human Adaptation on Americans and the 21st Century · · Score: 1

Human adaptation is and will always be the down fall of the idea that technology will solve the social problem of hunger and most other social problems. When a new revolutionary technology is introduced at first there is doubt. This doubt stems from fear. A basic fear of change. When this fear subsides people will embrace the technology and will temporarily relieve the problem. The solution is temporary because humans adapt.

Imagine if a revolutionary widget is made that quadruples the amount of food that can be produced. Now another widget is invented which allows for proper distribution of this food. All of a sudden world hunger is not a problem. 40 years later... The worlds population is 20 billion and hunger is again a problem. The human population adapted to the increase of food and then you have a population boom. Now there is another problem and your resources for food production, mainly land, dwindles due to the fact that people are now living where food was once being produced. The next generation of widgets will be aimed at solving this new problem. When they become mainstream the problem will be temporarily gone until humans adapt again and the cycle is reborn.

  2. Science Fiction meets Reality on Neurocomputing Makes Headway · · Score: 1

This technology is the basis for what the creators of "The Matrix" had invisioned. Imagine a terminal attached to the side of your head, when plugged in, bypasses your normal nural pathways and connects you to a totaly virtual world that you can feel down to the slight breeze of a spring day...

All they have to do is map your nural signals and simulate what your nerves produce. Kinda' scary.

  3. Soemthing New? on Take the FBI's Geek Profile Test · · Score: 1

I for one have always believed that the home environment is the biggest factor in the potential for violence. Espically the repression of anger. If one is not able to effectively express anger it is going to come out in very destructive ways.

This is very evident in the serial killer Ted Bundy. He was the son of a Baptist preacher. With me being baptist and having quite a bit of contact with Baptist preachers. I have noticed all of them have in some way repressed or shut down the anger of their children. This is where you get the PK (Preachers Kid) syndrome. With Ted Bundy it was more extreme in most casese so his repressed anger came out in a much more extreme manner.

I am a geek by far. I inherited this from my geek father. I was an outcast in school and church. I am now a very well adjusted geek. At the age of 22 I make 82K a year with only 3 semesters of college. I still go to the same church and am an active member of it. I attribute my success to the way I was allowd to express my anger in my home without the fear of repression or judgement from my parrents. If it was not for the open environment of the home I WOULD be in jail for lashing out with my repressed anger and probably killing some if not most of my class mates.

Sorry about my ramblings but I feel strongly in this area.

  4. The ISO file... on New Mozilla, Corel, and Napster Releases · · Score: 1

One of the best features of Linux is the ablility to mount a ISO file as a file system using the loopback device kenel option. An example would be mount /tmp/file.iso /mnt/mount_dir -t iso9660 -o loop=/dev/loop3,blocksize=1024 This would allow you to access the iso file before burning it and realizing there was an error in the file. This happened to me once. I downloaded a 600 MB ISO file over my cable modem and burned a CD. I realized the file was currupt after 2 CDs the next day my friend told me about this little trick

All that money has gone to Bill Gates head. Now with the imminent discipline by the Gov. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bill throwing a full blown temper tantrum, kicking and screaming on the floor.

  6. Why Stornghold for their SSL on Amazon.com switches to Apache · · Score: 1

I'm just curious why Amazon would go with a open source web browser but use a comerical adition for security. I know Apache has a 128 bit encryption adition which from my experience is quite awsome. Any thoughts?

  7. Re:PCS Encryption? on Listen to Cel phones live on the Internet? · · Score: 1

It is true that most PCS transmissions are encrypted using 56 bit DES (Which distibuted.net cracked in less than a day). But this encryption sucks. Not only is it 56 bit but the last 32 bits are all ASCII "0". The government pressured the PCS makers into this for easier monitoring of suspicous individuals.
