  1. This is NOT the BBC on BBC Documentary About Slashdot · · Score: 2

Remember, this is outsourced. It's a WorldOfWonder programme. So, what other magnificent programmes have this company been responsible for?

    • The Adam & Joe Show - puerile comedy.
    • 101 Rent Boys - need I say more?
    • The RuPaul Show - and I thought I hated Ruby Wax
    • Takeover TV - this is the best thing they've done, and they didn't actually do any of it; it's viewer-contributed stuff like American open-access cable channels.

I've sent them an exploratory mail about Monochrome to see if they're genuinely interested in real internet communities, or if they just want to cover "well-known" websites and pretend, once again, that Web == Internet.

If you're going to sell Linux laptops, why not make them StrongARM based, so the battery will actually last more than five minutes?

  3. Naive on Street Performer Protocol · · Score: 1
This whole idea is breathtakingly naive and is nowhere near a solution to the demise of enforceable copyright. It's downright disturbing that someone could come up with such a half-baked idea. Here is a brief outline of just a few of the major problems with it:
    • Art will stop evolving. No-one will be able to get paid for their work until they have built up a reputation, which probably means releasing at least two albums or three books free of charge first. In reality, the "publishers" will be more concerned to devote webspace to artists that they're going to make money from, ie those who are already established. Getting your foot on the bottom rung, difficult enough now, becomes almost impossible.
    • People aren't interested in something which may or may not be available at some point in the future. When I go into a record shop, I don't ask the guy behind the counter whether he knows when the new album from The Foobar Band is coming out. If ever. I see what's there at the moment. The success of, for example, amazon, depends on people being able to browse things which are currently available, or at least are definitely going to be available soon, and getting a guaranteed delivery date.
    • If people contribute $1 each, most won't bother reclaiming it if the thing is never released. Instant money to publishers for doing sod all!
Worst thought out bunch of arse I've read since the Mindcraft test...

  4. For all those worried about health risks on Competition for Jolt/Dew/Coffee? · · Score: 1

Tea is by far the healthiest form of stimulant, for several reasons.

Firstly, it contains theobromine and theophylline in addition to caffeine. Some people find this increases the "hit" compared with caffeine alone, others, like me, find it produces a more gradual and sustained buzz without the crashing comedown at the end, and aiding rather than hindering concentration, even towards the end of a 36-hour hackathon.

Secondly, it's absolutely loaded with flavonoids, antioxidants which can help to prevent heart disease, thrombosis, liver damage, even cancer.

Thirdly, a recent report suggests eating chocolate might actually be rather good for you, and the ingredients listed as beneficial are all present in tea. Again theophylline and flavonoids play a role.

So, eat chocolate, drink tea, and live a healthy life.

    Quiet Enjoyment???
Ah yes, I like nothing better of an evening than to put my feet up with a beer and a pipe and watch Windows NT thrashing my hard disk. You mean to say that Microsoft makes no guarantees that Concorde won't fly over and shatter my peace? Have they no heart?

  7. Scapegoats on Why Kids Kill · · Score: 4

Something has to take the blame, because otherwise America would have to face up to some pretty nasty truths: namely that some people are just psychopathic, whether it be genetic or a mental illness, some people have an inbuilt desire to hurt and to kill.

A failure to face up to these facts leads to the sort of pathetic response that we've seen from Charlton Heston. We'll blame their trenchcoats, we'll blame the internet, we'll blame Marilyn Manson, we'll blame *anything* as long as we don't have to confront the reality that this sort of person will always be around, and if you give them access to guns they will kill, and they'll kill you before you've even reached for your gun.

The plain truth is that there will always be would-be killers. The only way to reduce the number of people they actually kill is to take away the means of mass slaughter - ie guns. It's so simple. As a friend of mine put it, "if i feel like killing people and i have access to guns, it's easy. if i only have access to bananas, i might still be able to kill someone, but it's a lot more difficult".
