  1. UK /.ers, support Stand on Dear Mr. Straw · · Score: 1

I've been supporting Stand for a few months now. It's fairly painless work - just add a few lines to your webpage. They guess we'll have to send a letter to our MPs when the time comes, but that hasn't happened yet.

There are already a lot of MPs "adopted" into the scheme, so when the time for action does come, it should guarantee that a lot of politicians at least hear about the situation.

  2. The real issue on Corel Sticking to Closed Source Beta Test? · · Score: 1

The real issue here isn't whether Corel is being evil (they've done a fair bit already to further the Linux cause), but rather that the GPL could have a nasty loophole that less scrupilous companies (MS?) could exploit.

  3. Great stuff on Loki Software to Open Source SDL Motion JPEG Library · · Score: 1

This is good news. I've been hoping that better multimedia support would come for Linux, and the proprietry "standards" in use don't help. Maybe this will help us join the multimedia world in style...

  4. To MDI or not MDI... on Opera Browser for Linux/X11 Nears Beta · · Score: 1

Let's hope that someone from Opera is reading this:

MDI is BAD! It is a kludge at best. If Opera is MDI based, I will not consider using it - Konqueror should be sufficient for casual browsing. At least give us an option to turn it off...

  5. Another processor they haven't mentioned yet? on Amiga Technology Brief · · Score: 1

What I found interesting was that the brief seemed to separate the graphics processing from the audio/video processing, possibly implying an additional chip (possibly a Media Processor) that is responsible for those operations. One such chip could be the VM Labs Nuon processor, which would appear to have the power to perform MPEG2 encoding, and is already claimed to do decoding for DVD and Dolby Digital.

Pure speculation you understand, but with 1500mips processing power it would be a nice addition. Check out www.nuon-tech.com for more information.

The 7 USB ports are probably to replace:

    6) Joystick (1)

Yeah, I know a hub could add the extra functionality, but it's probably for perception value more than practical use.

  9. Take the battle to another level on Full Frontal Assault on Apache? · · Score: 1

We should concentrate on fighting Microsoft on issues they cannot win.

Okay, so assuming W2k includes a web server, we can counter that most Linux distributions also come with a web server (apache). For someone looking to choose a platform, or for others to migrate from Windows to Linux, we need to have other compelling reasons which Microsoft can't beat us at: Stability and Reliability spring to mind. Windows crashing is something that almost all computer users have experienced, and is also one of the most difficult things for Microsoft to overcome. This is where the Linux community should take the battle. Software such as XFS should improve Linux's image here, but there's still a lot we need to learn from IBM, Sun, SGI etc.

  11. Re:Humble KDE on Rasterman leaves RedHat · · Score: 1

There's a fine line to be drawn when discussing other "rival" projects. According to the quote's URL, Matthias was writing to the KDE developers list. In this context there is an argument that this is a personal opinion to a fellow developer, possibly backed up by fact.

Has anyone compared the functionality of Gnumeric/Abiword and Koffice? Are Abiword and Gnumeric overhyped? Possibly, when compared to the underhyped Koffice. Can Kword do twice as much as Abiword? Dunno, it's not something you can comment on unless you've compared both. Is Kword a nice design, more powerful and object oriented? Again, not something you can say unless you compare both.

If the same comments were used in a public forum such as an online news site, slashdot article etc, then it could be interpreted as being FUD. In this case, I would take it as a strongly worded (in part) opinion on a mailing list not meant for public consumption.

  12. A possible future for Usenet on "Usenet Death Penalty" against AOL · · Score: 1

I love Usenet - always have (well, since 1995 when I first got online). There seem to be two major problems:

    1) SPAM. Offtopic adverts crossposted to multiple groups.

    2) Bandwidth wasters. The me-to, off-topic and trolling posters.

Perhaps the first can be solved using technical methods (some form of intelligent crossposting management?).

I believe that given time, the second will sort itself out. There are more and more websites that offer message boards, and online chat bulletin boards. Considering most newbies associate the Internet with the Web, in a few years it could be the case that Usenet is treated like other valid Internet applications such as Gopher - useful but replaced by the web for the majority of users. If this becomes the case, then the "elite" can regain control of Usenet, simply because most newbies don't know it exists.
