Hiroshima and Nagasaki were shipyards. During WWII, they didn't have the capability to surgically strick targets so they blew up everything in the vicinity. The nuclear bombs were hardly precisino weapons, but they did hit military targets (and the surrounding civilian areas just like all other bombing raids). They were also intended to demonstrate to the Japanese government that we had the ability to utterly destroy Japan unless they stopped fighting. The goal was to prevent the enormous loss of life that would have resulted from an island-by-island invasion of Japan. That death toll would have dwarfed the deaths in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Bombing the World Trade Center will accomplish no strategic goals. It won't end a war, it won't affect our ability to make war, it won't convince America to back off anywhere. If anything, it will have the opposite effect. Right now, we spend a relatively small amount of our resources on the military. If we mobilized the country on a war-footing, we could produce a lot of military hardware and do a lot of damage. Hopefully, we won't need to...

The original intent behind copyright and patent law was to encourage the creation of works and to allow them to become public domain. The compromise was to allow the creator (person) a monopoly long enough to give him incentives to create and then let it become public after that. There is no benefit to society to let heirs or corporations keep copyrights and patents forever. There is actually a good reason for them to expire... to encourage the continual creation of new works.

Again, the purpose of copyright and patent law was to benefit society as a whole, not authors or inventors except just enough to encourage them to create. We've gone way overboard with this... far beyond any benefit to creators (beyond their deaths) and into an area that harms society by adding restrictions.

One interesting statistic is that very few home burglaries in the US happen while the family is home while most in Britain happen while the family is home. Prisoners will state flat out that they fear that someone at home might be armed.

The most commonly quoted statistic about home-owners defending themselves with a gun being more likely to be shot with their own gun is a complete and utter fabrication.
