What does: Exigo spamos et dona ferentes ; Ceterum censeo, delenda est Microsoft mean? (something to do with M$, obviously, but that's all I can discern)
I did find it interesting that Linus is interested in "appliances", but that's about the only revelation in that article for most slashdot readers.
Indeed! I think that's the first time I've ever heard Linus talk about specific [small] pieces of hardware..
"If you look, for instance, at the Nokia 9000 [Communicator], it is a cute thing, which I like, but it is not a good mobile phone and it is not a good PDA." Then again, I'm no expert on Linus-lore, but,.. you know....
this one you have to convert all your music to their proprietery format first....
but.. didn't the article say that it supported mp3? Note this from the Wired article: "Music in MP3 or CD audio can be stored on a hard disk using the OMG application which encrypts the data. Content can then be transferred to the Memory Stick via the USB port. "
Still, as others have noted, I think the whole Memory Stick thing is a joke.. come on, what's the point? They're going to have to invent something pretty darned revolutionary (that can only use memory sticks) if they want these things to catch on... ..makes me think of pretzel sticks every time I hear "memory stick"... sheesh!
The moral of this story is that just as always, you need to do your own research so that you don't get burned.
Indeed.. and if you can't find anything, move to a place where you can. Case in point: As far as I know (though I certainly could be _very_mistaken.. either way, there's nothing I can do about it now, b/c the bill-paying people in my house certainly won't go for it), all I have/can have is dial-up modem access in my area. Well, no, I likely could buy a T1 line or ISDN.. but I don't think we have cable or DSL access where I live. It's a teensy county; I don't even live in town, and people there hardly know what the internet is. There's only one ISP in my county, so far as I've found... it's pathetic! And don't even think of using any of the evil ISP-giants.... those darned people who make you dial long-distance numbers to subscribe to their service, only after you've installed their crappy disk full of bloated software.. ha!
So, you see.. it's pathetic, no? I'm not that worried though, b/c most of the time, I'm here at school.. nevertheless, it's sad for those at home to have dial-up access, which we all know is slower than frozen molasses going uphill.. especially if you're trying to download anything.
Can I IPO? What are the logistics involved here. I can have a linux distribution.
Hmm... perhaps incorporating oneself would be a good idea. and then gee, you're set!
Though I find this strange because we've "never" heard of them, think about it this way.. now we have. and now that they've been Slashdotted, they've got lots of coverage, and they have more of a chance at IPO success (even though I realize that it seems a lot of thoughts will be along the lines of "Who the heck are these people?!?")
Wait for the 1mm resolution radar imager that can see inside houses, then start worrying;-)
Yeah.. and then get one of those polarized screens for your monitor, and lock your bathroom door, and...
;-)
Of course, as we know, that wouldn't work, unless you lived in a glass house, because of annoying things like solid walls, doors, etc, etc...
Just wait til you start getting fibre optic cameras placed in, say, the ambiguous looking microphone "holes" on those computers that have them built in, so forth and so on.
Or, just do something really rambuncious (sp?) anyway, so they'll _really_ have something work looking at...;-)
People like this should have considered how children would impact their lives and how much time and responsibility it would require before they went and had kids. These kids who are getting messed up by things they watch on tv or in movies or on the net don't need a ratings system. They need real parents.
You're right. These kinds of kids are [most often] the kids who "fall by the wayside" because their parents aren't there teaching them "values," "morals," and keeping them "in line." These are the children of parents that, as you noted, apparently didn't think through the process of having a child/children before actually doing so, because if they had, let's hope they would have realized what it takes, and that they can't handle it. Having a child means taking care of it as well.... and taking care of a child includes educating it about various things it will encounter in life and enabling it to make the educated decisions one hopes it will make. Which, in this case, would be to use the internet in a "responsible" manner, whether that includes viewing porn or not. I personally think that porn is disgusting and would consider it a responsible action to "stear clear" of such material, but I realize that there may be some [people] out there in this world that are okay with it, and would educate their children likewise, and think that everything's fine. I wish not to discriminate against such people. I'm just reiterating what has been already said, which is what I feel: parents need to be responsible, and ratings need to be eliminated, because as much junk as I know is out there ("junk" in my opinion may not, I acknowledge, be junk in yours), we need to be able to take care of our own selves, and be able to decide for ourselves what we want.. which will be, I realize, according to what I've said, influenced by our parents, but not, according to what I believe, controlled by them. Then again, further review and elaboration of/upon this argument presents several large holes/discrepancies, but hopefully you understand my point.
Sometimes I like to be old fashioned and read a book made out of paper...
In that case/sense, I'm very old-fashioned in that I enjoy reading books made of paper more than electronic ones, I'd rather _not_ have my [networked] house networked also to the internet.. 24/7.. b/c I'd rather protect myself. Plus, I'd rather make myself work and get up and go do things, rather than automate everything I can by using the network..
I'm glad. As another person had already noted, and as I had noted while looking at the driver page, 3Com had listed the drivers by Red Hat distro #, which I didn't like. And even if they are useable across distro as you've said, I figure they could have simply listed them that way, by kernel, and then put the Red Hat specific [add-on] packages at the bottom of the list, for those who need/want them.
I'd moderate it up if I could (I realize that this revelation doesn't do anything to help, but I figured it couldn't hurt too much either).
I kinda understand the principle of the karma thing; I certainly understand the process by which it is obtained; but I don't quite understand what it does for us all.. what greater purpose it serves. How is it making Slashdot a better place? And darn it, mine's only 4, or 9, or some random (yet positive, fortunately enough) number. woo hoo for me
(Of course, I do appreciate all those who have ever moderated me up, and I'm happy to have that positive karma number)
--- just my $0.0000000000000000000000000002 cents worth--
Yes, indeed.. collection addictions have gone on long before Ebay and will continue long after, I'm sure, because there are just some people in this world that like to collect things, and Internet/Ebay/etc hasn't been around forever.
I've heard, and known, people who would scope out yard sales and plan routes for the quickest way to hit all of 'em.. it's sad, if you ask me. and they'd even take their kids along. with no breakfast! ack!
... we can start expecting the Palm to pick up speed on new features, development of [better/more powerful] peripheral stuff, etc, etc?
I'm thinking this is a good idea, because now we can see Palm taking their ideas and going with it more because, as the article said, they're an independently trading company (I think I remembered that right).
Anyway, that's a good idea. I think more companies who are trying to do dual project efforts like 3Com's doing should check that out as an option. It's worked before, it should work again, no?
I know this may be blasphemy, dunno, (or flamebait? I hope not), but I remember one of the first games I really loved (besides the el-cheeso games I played on my Tandy) was Oregon Trail, runnin' off a good ol' 5 1/4 disk. (woo hoo!)
I _know_ you guys remember that game. For some reason, I just thought it was cool.. I'd play that thing for hours. (ok, not _that_ long, but..)

I could be way off my rocker on this one, but I'm just wondering...
Virtual Works claims NSI and Volkswagen have no legal justification for challenging its use of www.vw.net, which it said NSI assigned to the Internet service provider in 1996. A year earlier, VW was assigned the address http://www.vw.com, leaving http://www.vw.net unclaimed. I can't believe those people...net denotes an ISP, generally, so what do they think they have to stand on in their argument that www.vw.net should be given to Volkswagen? I can't believe a judge would consider taking a case like this... then again, the way the legal system in America is, I shouldn't be surprised.
Nevertheless, I just hate it when I hear about NSI and the companies that do this kind of thing... I mean, honestly, they usually have no basis for their actions, because most people use the generic ".com" when looking for addresses (ok, well I would, if I were looking for Volkswagen, because ".com" is usually what general sites that their site would have... they sell cars, that's all. They're no organization, no ISP, certainly no government organization.), and so I don't see why/how they should also be awarded ".net". What do they need with two sites? (I know, I know... they'd both point to the same thing/host the same thing, etc.) Still, if people aren't smart enough to find VW (re: by trying www.vw.com), they don't need to be buying one,.. much less a car in general!
Just downsample the MP3's to 56 or 32 Kbps. You'll get tape or at least FM-quality sound. How good do you think the sound circuitry would be anyway. A 32 Kbps clip would be 1/4 the size and you could fit several "normal" songs on one of those disks. Smart you are... I didn't think of that. Geez, I feel kinda dorky now. But still, several songs isn't much. Then again, I shouldn't be complaining, so nevermind.
I'm also guessing that they'd eventually get those penny sized disks more compressed, allowing for larger storage volumes/more mp3s, etc... which would be worth waiting for. Heck, by the time I ever get around to considering buying a PDA, I'll get all kinds of cool stuff, for less $ (sounds pretty darned cool to me..)
As the user "georgeha" said, the mentioned a fan in the article: and a fan for propulsion Which I'm guessing, since I'm assuming that, the PDA is so small, and since it'll be in the zero (?) gravity of space, it'll be so light that all it'll need are a couple of teensy little fans, kinda like the ones used in laptops.. (they're _so_ small!)
but the mp3 player has little penny-size disks that hold about 2 megs of data (bah) so if you ask me, at'l suck. right you are, about it sucking, if it really only has 2 megs... what kind of mp3s do they think we're listening to? apparently no mp3 I've got.. (well, I have a few clips... which are ~500 KB, but that's all..)
fold out keyboard sounds neat, but, with all of these peripherals, especially the fold out keyboard, isn't this thing going to get bigger/bulkier.. perhaps easier to damage? I can imagine me cracking the keyboard, or something like that.
