As a Japanese/English bilingual, I completely agree. I use the two languages in very different ways.
As a resesarch in this area, I can add that there is a large different in the content available online in the two languages as well (two publications for reference. One on Twitter http://www.scotthale.net/pubs/... and one on Wikipedia http://www.scotthale.net/pubs/...)
