This will be a perfect match for those who use MSN and/or AOL daily.

When I heard the news I literally laughed out loud.

I mean, AOL still markets with those grossly ineffective CDs. My 84 year old mother (and about a dozen of her friends) received a round of these coasters just last week at their retirement community. The AOL envelope had to be delivered to their door (who knows why). She asked the concerge who handed her the envelope, "What do I do with this." He replied, "You toss it in the trash bin."

What is MS thinking? M$ should focus on the business world where they can bully people into doing what they want them to do.

  5. Re:What about citation/reference manager? on Alternatives To Office For Mac OS X · · Score: 1

The citation/reference manager issue is discussed often on OOo writer forums. You can learn more there.

If you are willing to invest in the learning curve, it is feasible to switch from EndNote to open source reference managers (BibDesk and others).

While non-EndNote solutions may not integrate into NeoJ exactly like the EndNote-Word solution, they do work.

Besides, EndNot is the worst OS X application on my computer. It is horrible.

    NeoJ Rocks!

OOo and NeoJ does have a simple way to dynamically display word count in any document.

1/ Place the cursor in your document where you'd like the word count to appear ( I use the header).

2/ Drag down at the NeoJ Insert menu label in the OS X menu bar.

    3/ You want

    Insert/Fields/Document/Statistics/Words

While this may seem like a lot of work (ha ha) if you can put this field in your professional-writer templates.

Also, there is a OOo macro out there that supposedly gives a more accurate word count. However installing a OOo macro is an enormous task (ha ha again).

The parent post serves to point out there are many free OOo mannuals, tutorials and user forums available.

For what it's worth, I get paid to write and everything I've written for the past 18 months came from NeoJ.

When I write for fun (non-fiction) I use CopyWrite because of its organization tools and full-screen (no distraction) mode. I still use NeoJ for the editing and printing though.

  7. Big Threat to Professional Scientific Societies on Wellcome Trust to Require Open-Access Publishing · · Score: 3, Insightful

The inevitable change in scientific peer-reviewed publishing will have a major impact on professional scientific organizations such as The American Chemical Society, American Association of Immunology, Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology - just to name a few.

These non-profit organizations enjoy significant cash flow and influence in their field from the current system.

Many of these organizations are mired in bureaucracy and petty internal politics. I predict history will repeat itself and they will act like the RIAA, the movie industry and other large organizations, and attempt (and fail) to avoid fundamental change when it stares them in the face.

This is sad because if one of the major professional scientific societies led the way, eventually everyone would eventually benefit.

GreenKeeper Software has an OS X donationware spplication to run/manage Boinc.

The Deep Thought home page saya:

"Deep Thought is a front end for Boinc, a software platform developed at Berkeley which allows volunteers such as yourself to contribute unused processor cycles to help solve problems in physics, medicine, climatology, astronomy, and more. Combining tens of thousands of computers, Boinc users form what is effectively the most powerful supercomputer on the planet.

Until now, Boinc was only available as a command line application which required users to have a basic working knowledge of UNIX. Deep Thought, on the other hand, provides a very simple user interface for Boinc allowing anybody who wishes to contribute a chance to do so."

This application workes well for me (OS X 10.3.8).

In my view Deep Thought makes Einstein@home ready for prime time.

Most Mac users have machines that canhandle the extra resources NeooficeJ requires to run well.
