Do any of us still really care enough about Microsoft??? Who cares what they win... A spot that says they crashed the most and they keep their server up longer so it could crash more? they might even have the last laugh that they could put the $$$ into affording the bandwith and the idiotic users trying to get into other systems. The thing that PO's me the most is that Linux PPC promised a computer to AbiSource, and used that same computer to give to a security assurance test... AbiSource right now is one of the closest buisiness models following Free Software or OSS. Give them the F***ing computer. Don't list it as one of the big reasons to stop the "contest." Power PPC in my book has fallen prey to the same PR that MS uses.
I probably don't agree about the Catch up part. But the moral part is dead on. At 9 years old I started on the computer. It was horrific to me because I had no storage devices (tape or floppy drive) and I had to program everything in and watch it vanish. I've heard worse stories of these things called punch cards:)
Anyways... I was into the local BBS scene. My mother, who still doesn't know an off from on switch, was worried and told me to be careful. I wasn't too careful. I read the Anarchist cookbook. I met shady computer people at malls (some of whom taught me much about programming). And I actually ran a BBS a few years later. But, I grew up to be a pretty well adjusted person with morals. I guess my mother taught me something very important, there is much to worry about if your not told to worry about it.
Here is the point of it: It's sick. There's much better ways of putting things. Come on now, this is news for nerds, not news for the perverse. I thought shock was a thing for brain dead people, not people of the intellegence of the "average" Slashdot reader (much sarcasm here). I would almost think Howard Stern would be much more moderate than that. But, (and everything after but is bullshit,) for some reason it takes some people a certain amount of shock before they get the blunt of things.
I know this isn't a post about Be. But I've been thinking.... Linux is finally starting to get Games and Multimedia apps. Is there an actuall game distro of Linux? Yes, I know, a lot of people are already rolling their eyes saying "another distro." I can't help to mull it over though. Get the Linux kernel and strip it way down. Keep what you need for gaming and include the latest utilities you would need. Include a number of the better freeware games, and maybe even a commercial game or two. You can have a small window manager and tweak the hell out of the file system... I already have a system I set up where I killed 90% of the services (NFS, Samba, Named, Ect.) so I could devote it to a few games I enjoy under Linux. It works extremely well, but it could be taken a lot further...
Maybe I'm just a f'ing ( use fucking or friggen ) old hag... I don't get it anymore.... A BBS (if this is one or not) used to have replies on the subject.... What does Unreal have to do with anything. I was in my glory days for a second and nobody can say anymore... Sorry... Computers suck really bad... and my rapid use of periods mean I am pissed. Get Off my thread....
Yeah, get off my thread... (To the Stones tune get off my cloud...)
Because I'm a pissed off drunk old hacker who can't take anymore of this global non conformist bullshit....
Fantus... Mail Bomb me if you must... I hate my ISP (and job that it may be).....
It's good to see Commercial Games coming to the market. I know a lot of people cringe at the word Commercial, but it's a fact of life that most "quality" games have commercial roots, and for good reason. The cool thing about Linux is a Game can be commercial, but developers from different companies can all work on the same open source API's and drivers. They can even delve into the Kernel if they need to. So yes, the game engine and graphics and story line are all proprietary, but the framework that talks to the computer and its devices can all remain open source, and benefit from it too.
On the lighter side... I asked my father 17 years ago for an Atari, and ended up with a computer. I was devastated, but in retrospect, it was the best damn investment he could've made. Although he must of cringed when I was going to Radio Shack every week spending his money on upgrades. Games are important to me. Even though I don't use Windows anymore, and don't want to, I sometime miss some of the Games I use to fire up after going buggy (pun not intended) from coding after 6 or 7 hours...
I stop by MS once in a while and do a search on Linux. It's entertaining. The one thing I did find, I noticed they did a port of Netshow to Linux. I didn't want to download it then. After MS woke up and smelled the Linux coffee (not to be confused with java), I went back and the download page is gone. It still makes a mention of it being there, but I get a document not found. I got a little more curious and tried the FTP site. It still has the other UNIX versions, but for some reason the Linux ELF binary disappeared. Weird. Maybe we should report this to the X-Files.
