I've had experience this term of using ObjectStore PSE Pro on an OODBMS course.. and I didn't like it much.
The system itself is proprietary - which meant that I could only run the code in the labs with the software installed, and I couldn't take a copy home with me...
The object types which can be stored within the database are limited.. for example, I couldn't store Vector objects within the database, which was quite annoying..
Bleh. Not much content to this post, just a vent about how crappy PSE Pro is, mostly..;)
I'm not surprised the US is irritated by this. It'll allow proper, decent strength encryption to be used pretty much worldwide (apart from the US), using Europe as a development base.. which is probably a Good Thing. (tm) Especially given I live outside the US.
On the subject of the relaxation of US encryption export laws, do you really think the US govt. would allow people to export 128 bit encryption if they hadn't figured out how to break it trivially?:)
It's a great idea. The integration of this kind of device (MP3 player) with a phone is an inevitable evolutionary step towards the kind of combined PDA/phone/music/etc. devices that will be commonly available in a few years time.
But... the bit about downloading MP3s on the phone made me wonder - the best bandwidth I've heard of over a cellphone is 14k4... what kind of MP3s can I get at that bandwidth? Would my batteries last long enough?:)
As I said, a nice idea. But until 3G/high bandwidth phones become the norm.. downloading MP3s over a cellular link will be painful.
Virus Experts are predicting that the spread of this variant will be slower than the original Lovebug virus, because of the 'mutation' that it tries to perform on itself. Every time it mutates, it adds up to 10 lines of crap to itself, in order to try to avoid detection. It ends up being huge after a moderate number of iterations.
One of the features mentioned on stationterminus.com -
Real-time Voice communication between players using Voxware's MetaVoice technology.
This is one of the most interesting features for me - trying to type commands to other members of your team while playing the game makes it a lot harder to do when you're also pressing lots of other keys to control your craft...
Of course, on low bandwidth connections, it might suck.. but this is a step in the right direction.
Folks, you might want to read the article. The problem is with a piece of software called Download Demon, a part of Netzip, NOT Realplayer. It's the same company, and you might want to stop using their products on principle, but don't rush off to find an alternative to Realplayer just because you're worried it'll track personal information...
Like Celeron, Duron is also blessed with an inscrutable name. Celeron turned out to also be the name of an 18th-century French explorer and the birthplace of Lucille Ball. Duron, by contrast, is the name of a maker of industrial cement floors in Canada.
So, um, it's named after a guy that worked hard to hit rock bottom? Eesh.:)
This potentially sounds like a great thing - but I'll wait 'till people have had a chance to peruse their 'Open Group Public License' before getting too happy... IANAL, but I would like to see what the legal eagles among us make of it..
Reading through the comments, and seeing lots of negative comments about how X looks, etc.. I just thought I'd add my bit. My X setup looks a hell of a lot better than the Windows interface, BeOS etc, because I run Enlightenment, a rather nifty Window Manager for X.
Go check out the screenshots, and drool. It certainly pushes X to the limits as far as graphical performance is concerned.
I've been reading Slashdot since late 1997.. I have to say, it's been a really useful source of information over the course of doing a degree and stuff.
Here's to the next 10,000!:)

It's a book of pictures..! Not much reading involved! *grin*
I personally _really_ hope this doesn't get implemented in any significant fashion - thankfully I'm in the UK, but if it does become law in the US, other countries may use it as a model for similarly silly laws...
Connectix has signed an OEM agreement with Red Hat in which Connectix will ship a new version of Virtual PC with Red Hat Linux preinstalled. Both new versions of Virtual PC -- Red Hat Linux and Windows 2000 -- will begin shipping in March. [site not updated]
There's nothing about the Virtual Game Station on their site that I can see, at least, relating to this story..
Isn't there a difference between the Virtual PC and the Virtual Game Station? As far as I can tell, this won't let you play Playstation games under Linux... it'll just let you run x86 Linux on a Macintosh... for which you can use Mac PPC and get better performance...

Heh. Of course, by that logic, Daikatana should have been an absolute classic.. *cough*

Have a look at http://www.slashdot.org/authors.pl. Gives you a list of all the authors on Slashdot.

What would you rather have, Windows Media Player?

And a star to steer her by..
It was mentioned on Wired that you suffered from a DDOS yesterday - do you have any more information about this yet?

I certainly hope not.
The actual post on MacNN -

Has someone gotten confused? :)
Of course, I meant 'Linux PPC', not 'Mac PPC'.
Dammit, it's been a long day.

Of course, I could be wrong.
STAND has been campaigning against this for a while now.

Looks like someone at Transmeta likes Slashdot, too.
