i'm not new here, have read it since before the domain was registered and it was Rob's personal page. the kernel releases are an artifact of the fact, that slashdot used to be Rob's linux news site, so if he wants to put every kernel release on the front page, it's his option.

  2. "Routine check" on British Telecom's Hyperlink Claims To Reach U.S. Court · · Score: 1

I noticed in the article it said they noticed it as part of a routine check. Ok, let me get this straight, they recieved the patent in 1989, and in 2000 were doing this "routine check" and 'oh my gosh' discovered they happened to have a patent for this? First off, how routine is over 10 years, and if their check it more recent than every 10 years, why did they 'discover' their patent before? Obviously the patent they filed was tossed into the back room so to speak, and forgotten about. It looks like someone is just wanting to pick a fight with everyone right now. Obviously they did not expect for their idea to fly, or they would have kept a closer eye on the patent, instead of waiting so long before saying anything. The patent runs out in 2006, and they waited over half the time of the patent to claim their idea.

slashdot doesnt directly advertise in its stories. Having ads for a company, whether it is your sponsor, or a third party, is all up to the maintainer, but slashdot itself sells nothing except getting a commission from advertising space. They dont sell "Slashdot Advertisements" but over time have needed to have some income to support itself. I've read slashdot since just after Rob started it as his personal Linux News site, and havent really ever seen any direct advertisement for anything, including VA, other than the banner ad at the top. Last I knew, having a banner ad never said you were selling something, it just says you're willing to endorse whatever the ad says.

  7. Mission Critical application! on SAP invests in Red Hat · · Score: 1

Wow.. it says they believe its ready for mission critical application. If you read the WindowsNT eula, it states NOT TO USE IN MISSION CRITICAL ENVIRONMENT. Therefore I guess Linux has even one more up on M$, considering it CAN be used in mission critical, while NT cant. Sorta goes along w/ M$'s statement in the eula about "If data is lost because of this application, Microsoft is not responsible." and M$'s statements about who to sue if Linux breaks.

I liked the part where he said not to publish or email anything that was full of spelling errors. He said it made you a twit and not a hacker. I wonder if he's seen any of Raster's emails. I also noticed quite a few spelling errors in that document itself. Sorta hippocritical (I can't even spell that) if I may say so. Linus has even sent quite a few emails w/ tons of spelling errors. Tons of people known to the world as "hackers" have terrible spelling when sending emails or such documents.

Exactly.. and its not like M$ had 10,000 integrated apps waiting for them when M$dos and/or win3.0 / 9x went mainstream either. It took a little while for development to build up. But I guess Muth *wasnt paying attention* back then.

I guess M$ thinks an OS or anything for that matter can just pop up from nowhere and have a ton of integrated apps waiting for it to appear.

Approx. 2 weeks ago a man recieved a $20 bill from a store as change, and thought it looked fake. It wasnt one of the new bills, just had things that looked fake about it. He took it to the bank to try to get it changed for smaller bills, hoping the bank would either tell him it was fake or not.
Since he didn't ASK the bank if it was fake, they assumed he knew it was, and now he is in jail for 5 years for distributing counterfeit money. True story, happened in Kansas.
