  1. Re:Have they crash tested Segways yet? on Segway Getting Real-Life Tests · · Score: 1

You're about as protected as you would be jogging. If you trip and fall down when you're running, you might get a few bruises but I doubt you would suffer any serious injuries. Seriously, I think people here are overreacting about the Segway. I would be much more comfortable riding a Segway on a sidewalk (possibly along with other Segway riders) than I would riding a bicycle on a road, with cars going 40mph passing me.

Well, you're paying for DirectTV when you already get broadcast tv channels for free, right? It's the same thing. People will pay when the new service is much of a much higher quality with more variety and zero to very few commercials. I've had XM for about 3 months now and I can't imagine going back to FM radio.

  3. Because they're not stupid on Microsoft, zlib, and Security Flaws · · Score: 1

Microsoft knows that putting GPL code in a closed source product would open them up to lawsuits, so they avoid it at all costs. The article even mentions that Microsoft developers are banned from using GPL source code. They have used non-GLP code before, and in every case they have complied with the associated license. I wish we could put these silly accusations to rest. The only supporting evidence anyone has given is "because they're Microsoft".

  4. Well it is a demo on KT-Tech Sound Compression - Music at 32 Kbit/s · · Score: 1

Many demo programs ("trial versions") have built in expiration dates, where the software stops functioning after a set time limit. This is very common and perfectly legal (to the extent of my knowledge). They're generous to give you a year, many programs expire after 30 days.

  5. Re:Sudden stop? on Segway Hits the Auction Block · · Score: 1

It wouldn't be that hard to get it up to your office. Most new buildings are designed to be wheel chair accessable, so a Segway shouldn't pose any problems. Sure you wouldn't be able to walk up the stairs with it but you could take an elevator. This assumes your company doesn't mind you riding the segway indoors.

  6. Re:segway = waste of money on Segway Hits the Auction Block · · Score: 1

That's a matter of opinion. I would easily pay $3000 for one of these, and I'm just a student on a limited income. Consider how much money you spent on your computer, and how often you have to replace it. $3000 wouldn't be that bad of a deal. For me, it would save a lot of time getting to campus and getting from one area of campus to another. They don't allow bikes or motor scooters on the sidewalks here, and I can't exactly drive across campus. (The nearest parking lots that have spaces are ~15 minutes walking from the academic buildings). Several people are saying that cars are so much better than Segways, but they're not supposed to replace cars. The idea is that you would spend 5 minutes on a Segway instead of 15 minutes walking.

  7. Exactly, remember code red on Read the Fine Print · · Score: 1

The code red outbreak was caused by hundreds of thousands of Windows servers going un-patched. Microsoft had a "critical security update" available a full month before the code red worm was released, but everyone still cites code red as an example of weak security by Microsoft. Perhaps the auto-update is what we need to prevent similar situations.

And as some other posters mentioned, these statements in the EULA basically amount to the Win XP auto-update feature, which you can disable. If you don't like Microsoft automatically checking for patches you can turn it off.

  8. Re:Net-based Streaming Preview? on Satellite Radio: Tune In or Turn Off? · · Score: 1

The XM radio site has samples of most of their channels. (requires Windows Media Player I believe). I have been listening to the classical music channels this afternoon, and I have been very pleased with their selection. I would easily pay $10 a month for this. I'm still trying to justify to myself paying $300 for the receiver though. It sure beats FM radio hands down (0 classical channels in my area!)

  9. Tom's original test was flawed on The Report of My Thermal Death Have Been... · · Score: 1
It seems to me that the processor failed during Tom's original test due to the motherboard, not the processor. Here he discusses the Athlon MP. The motherboard in the test was a "Siemens' D1289". I had never heard of Siemens making motherboards before this article. Some quotes from that page:
Siemens assured us that the thermal protection circuitry is definitely working on their motherboard.

Those pictures cannot show you what happened by far as good as our test-lab video. A split second after the heat sink had been taken off the Palomino-Athlon, the system crashed. We then watched in horror as smoke clouds rose from the overheating core. The temperature measurement ensured us of what we had feared. No semiconductor survives almost 300 degrees Celsius / 580 degrees Fahrenheit. Palomino was dead.

We rushed to the telephone to confer with Siemens. The engineers assured us that what we had seen was for real. The thermal diode of Palomino is unable to react quickly enough. Only 1 degree/s is what the thermal diode is able to handle. That might be good enough for failing fans. A fallen off heat sink however will ensure a dead Athlon processor and possibly a damaged motherboard as well. What a serious disappointment!

In particular, the 1 degree/second claim from Siemens is a little suspect. I find it hard to believe that any thermal diode would react that slowly to temperature change. If the thermal diode was that bad, how could Siemens even implement any thermal protection? The cpu would be dead before the motherboard even knew what happened. Instead, I think it was the thermal protection on the Siemens motherboard that was defective, and then Siemens tried to place the blame on AMD.
