Beside saying nah nah.. to us internet people.. Why would they bother? Anyone who is using crypto extensivly, especially to hide illegal activities isn't using 64 bit. Probably using 1024 bit keys or higher. Only thing I can think of is to build a machine that can actually crack much higher keyspaces, but just say that you are only cracking 64 bit so as to not piss off the public about violations of privacy and such.
I think this is an excellent idea and think more people should take advantage of this feature intel poorly removed. I have a dual celeron 300 mhz system using a tekram dual slot 1 motherboard and i am using two msi slocket adapters. I overclocked both 300 mhz chips to 503 mhz using fans (over a GHZ!) I did use a whole lot of fans, 2 x 3 fan units for the cpus and 3 case fans. The case runs at 90 deg avg. This system has been running this for a month and a 1/2 totally stable running 2.2.6 It is the fastest thing I have ever seen. I can compile a kernel in 3 minutes flat.
I thought it was a GREAT! movie..I watched it 2 time last night..at 8 and 10pm. I never realized what a prick steve jobs really was.. no wonder apple has gone down the tubes. The movie was quite inspirational though. I have always thought of starting my own computer oriented business. I did a lot of thinking last night about about possible ideas. I've been thinking about this for years, but could never come up with a totally original and plausable idea. But last night it hit me! Maybe it was the movie. Maybe it was just dumb timing.. Either way, I liked it!
In 2.2.9 usb was supported somewhat. I believe you can use usb mice and keyboards now.. I think. Its something you have to enable specifically though in the kernel source to compile it in.. and it is very very alpha.
What does a book review about learning to use a 35 mm camera have to do with Slashdot? I understand the need for advertising but arent the banner ads (that take forever to load) enough? Its a sad day when you see totally non technical crap like this float across slashdot.
For those of us building systems that need fast machines.. (high end games, math, etc) its a cheap alternative to super high P3 prices. for 1k total I built a dual proc 300a celeron system that is overclocked to 504 mhz per cpu giving me 1 ghz worth of processing power. Heck I would spent well over 1k on just two 500 mhz p3 processors alone if I went the traditional route.
And all it took to get there was the addition of 2 high cfm case fans and 2 monster cpu fans. Its been running at 100% cpu for 2 weeks now cracking rc5 keys. Its quite stable.. In some cases the celerons do out perform the pent 3's when overclocked because of the faster cache.. (although smaller). And yes its running linux:)
I bought to 300a's from these guys about 3 weeks ago. I ended up getting them both overclocked to 504 mhz each in a dual proc system:) Only needed to add two extra fans and of course some MONSTER cpu fans. 1+ ghz !
Looks like I am just about to finish that pilots license at the right time.. This might even replace my dream of getting certified and owning my own single seater hilo.
Can you imagine how much fun you could have with this? VTOL is basically unheard of in the private sector and not ever a tiny bit remotly to this price.
I would start small.. maybe a webserver here.. a dns server there.. Etc. Make sure the staff gets a lot of good traning and make sure they run linux on their desktops. You will probably need to hire a bunch of consultants to help you and teach your staff the basics. Going from unix to NT is okay.. but IMHO going from NT to unix is a HUGE learning curve. As far as cost? Hmm well training your entire staff bigtime, time associated with making the transition, a support contract for your inexperienced admins, maybe some hardware replacement issues (not everything is supported) I wouldnt attempt to introduce the entire company to linux. (servers only). The avg worker would freak out trying to use linux to do their job after using winnt.
I LOVE linux.. but going from NT to linux will be a BIG nightmare in the beginning.. but become much easier then admining NT over time. I guess what you really have to ask is.. is the time you would invest in the beginning be worth it in the end? Is stability and reliability a KEY component in your environment?
I just finished build a dual proc 300a celeron system using a tekram motherboard and the new version 1.1 msi slockets. It kick major ass.. Each chip is overclocked to 463 mhz getting well over 900 bogomips.. And churning out 1.5 million rc5 keys per sec.
I cant wait for quake 3 SMP.
The tekram board is cheap..well documented..and nice quality. Screw the intel boards.. stick with the other brands.. good dual proc boards IMHO are tekram, epox, and asus (pricy though).
What is good for Sun is good for Linux. Anything that draws a market share away from Microsoft is a win for all of us. I betcha Unix folks would be more inclined to try and use linux over Microsoft folks. I use Solaris (sparc) at work exclusivly. It is VERY VERY stable, the apps are well developed and and if I can run linux binaries.. its freakin great. Less compiling and porting on my part and more time spent perfecting my environment so it runs 99.99% of the time without me. (I have a 99.95% uptime mandate). We shouldnt fued amoung ourselves.. Working together is the key to fend off the evil empire.. Linux has its place right now on lower end systems, and it does that job very well. If you need high end horse power then you want to go with solaris. Hell, who can beat a E10k for speed and raw power, maybe a mainframe or cray....thats about it.
This robot sucks compared to the prototype they have been displaying on that website for months. The prototype was cute, this thing looks lame. Its also cant do half the things the proto type could. Like play real fetch, play soccer, etc.. etc..
Use the file drivers/net/ethertap.c from 2.2.7 and then recompile... it should work fine then.
SMP support in latest kernels?
on
Linux 2.2.8
·
· Score: 1
How is SMP support in these newer kernels? I am about to put together a dual proc pent II and I want to make sure I get a rock solid SMP kernel on it. Would 2.2.8 be the way to go? or would another rev be more appropriate? How is smp support in 2.2.5..the one that comes with redhat 6.0?
They only need to have 5k in total damages each to qualify for a feloney. All the extra bucks are just to impress the judge and maybe bankrupt the guy in some future civil trial.
I dont feel sorry for this CRACKER. He took his chances.. made a bunch of mistakes and got busted. NoOne is so smart that they cant get caught. There is always someone smater. In fact he wasnt even a really good cracker. He actually was more like an advanced script kiddie.
How do we know that the version of WinNT being used is even an off the shelf version? Yes they have the right to do performance tweaks, but maybe they are using a totally modified OS that is not avaliable to the public to run their test with. I say that the linux testing folks should make sure that its an off the shelf copy.. maybe bring a few NT cd's with them just to be sure. I am sure mindcraft is gonna find a way to doctor this thing.. Maybe this is how they are going to do it.
While I think Linus has some amazing talents his quotes about a entertainment oriented society are short sighted. There will always be ditch diggers in the world. And people who just plain enjoy ditch digging. I Do unix sysadmin work. I love my job, but some days I long for a simpler more mindless job. Like fry guy:) But, then I look at all the fun things I want to do with my life. Just learned to scuba dive, want to learn how to fly a plane, helicopter, climb a mountain..etc. All of these things cost big bucks and can only be done by someone with a high paying job. So I will always stick in the technology fields to make the money necessary to enjoy my life. Like the article said.. Money cant buy happiness but those who say that usually dont have any. Conviently i have found a job I like and pays well, but if it didnt I could see myself taking another more boring job to make the money necessary to enjoy my free time more. Work is a way for me to enjoy my free time.. It just so happens that i enjoy work as well. Lots of other people arent so lucky.
