  1. Interesting... on A Recipe for Newspaper Survival in the Internet Age · · Score: 1

Not to self aggrandize, but I wrote a similar piece, though shorter, written in the same vien as it applies to newspapers and the threat/opportunity of eReaders and other around the corner technologies. You can read my thoughts and how they dovetail into Roblimo's own conclusions at, www.techarati.com, the article is titled "Print is Dead".

  2. Print is dead, man has killed it. on Flexible Electronic Paper · · Score: 1

For the technical individual, the advent of e-ink is wonder lust development, but for traditional media this brings about a suit of conundrums that will forever change the landscape of print and broadcast media. The comment has been made that these device press releases have been bouncing around for some time, and that is very true. What actually prevents devices such as eReaders from making it to market are the existing media and the current forms of delivery they are content to deliver their information on. This reasoning makes for a product still looking for a medium of delivery. Many readers of this post will simply say that the medium already exists, and I agree, it is the Internet. But, just one of the issues is the question of how does a traditional print company make money from placing there content on devises like this? Traditional print rates are to high, and internet rates do not generally cover the cost of development and production. Plus ad in a dollop of the institutional mentality that most print and broadcast media have, and you may start to see why there is a reluctance to provide content for devices such as this.

My argument, though sounding against e-ink type device is not, but merely an understanding of the nuances involved in making such products main stream. To view more about what I think, you can visit a piece I wrote regarding these developments, what the challenges are, and eventually how I think it will play out at http://www.techarati.com/ .

I keep reading these posts about how hot the 12 " PowerBook gets, yet I know of at least 10 twelve's in the field here in Austin, and all run cooler than our brand new Dell Latitudes. I personally have a 12" PowerBook and a Dell x200 (I support sales applications on two platforms directly), the Dell can get very hot to the touch, yet my Mac gets warm but never painfully.

New York city is just getting them? I'm in Austin, TX and have had my DVR for two months. My first box upon being plugged in gave me a "Fatal read/write error" when acessing the DVr functions and had to be swapped out, my second box worked for three days until it also gave me a fatal error, the third box (the third try is always the charm) has worked flawlessly since I installed it. It's nice being able to tape SG1 to view later, and have it auto delete in two weeks.

As a Yank, I appreciate the subtleties of American English and it's sub-dialects, as well as British English and it's sub-dialects. Both can make me laugh in its word usage.

I'm still amused by a phrase I heard in London a couple of years ago, I was asked "are you in the queue for the lou". I found this usage absolutely splendid, it was much more musical than the American equivalent "are you in line for the bathroom".

As for the 10.2.4 update, I haven't had a problem on any of my Macs (Dual G4 450 & Pismo at work, and my 12" PowerBook & Dual 1ghz at home). Icons are ok, prefs. unchanged, etc, etc.

And even if these small items were changed for some reason or another, I can say it wouldn't really bother me, as long as everything else works.

I have used .mac for 2 years. In that two years I have experienced two temporary email outages, once that I could not access my iTools, and once that I could not access my web site. Not stellar, but not bad either. I use .mac as my primary email account. And as such, check it from my home and office, from my Ericsson t68m (T-Mobile say it must be POP, but yet it still works), and have accessed it from a M$ PC kiosk in Ireland a few weeks ago. I also maintain Road Runner account for my home, in the same 2 years, I have had 15 major outages (really), twice I've had email out for a day or more, and numerous issues with my personal web page hung of their server. Not to mention going through DOCSIS Modem's as if I were changing socks. So in comparison .mac has been a champ. I only wish Apple would spend the dough to put in a real live call center for .mac, the email routine is lame.

    Have a nice day!
