  1. Female Sci Fi on Sci Fi Literature 101? · · Score: 1

The only Science Fiction I know of with a decidedly female perspective, and invaluable for that reason, is:

Marge Piercy - Woman on the Edge of Time.

  2. Linux Assimilate Java More on Linux to Get Windows Apps? · · Score: 1

How does it feel to be assimilated?

Java developers know. As we enter the adjusted millenium, we will not yet have a decent Java 1.2 Virtual Machine in the major web browsers or on any alternative platforms except Solaris. And the penguins all like perl. Hopefully all that will change.

If the Justice Department does nothing, will we have Windows 2005 with a Linux kernel that sits on 90% of the desktops? To be better, Linux needs applications, and that's where Java should come in.

As Java developers turn to Linux, I hope Linux developers and Open Source developers assimilate with open arms.

  3. Genetic Algorithm on Can humans create life? · · Score: 1

    What is life?

The definition of intelligence is continually redefined to exclude non humans, and
the definition of life redefined to exclude man made creations. I think we'll find that if our technologies evolve enough they will create something of great enough complexity that it manifests a soul.

I think that the best scientific definitions of life include the Earth, corporations, economies, etc...

Ever write a genetic algorithm? Problem solving using the same techniques as evolution - reproduction, crossover, mutation. You have an array of potential solutions (genomes) that comprise the gene pool, and the ones that get selected randomly (chances increased by viability as assessed by an objective function) are randomly crossed with an other randomly chosen solution. The gene pool goes from being worthless to having some perfect solutions (if one exists, otherwise as good as possible, if done right). May take 25 or 50 generations, but you definitely are building a petri dish and growing solutions to problems.

The issue of soul is more scientifically refered to as consciousness. If technology's growth continues exponentially, I wouldn't rule out any goals.

There are HUGE issues of safety here far before we get close to creating things that can sin!

  5. The Network is the People on Sun buys maker of StarOffice · · Score: 1

Sun is bringing a well needed balance to the computer industry. Largely with the success of Java and Linux, Sun is riding a wave that will likely continue. It is unfortunate to see the Slashdotters (younger every day) rip apart Sun for fighting for choice in the computer industry.

But then again, it is unfortunate to see the rapid consolidation in this and other industries which create great giants that endanger the smaller companies which create for great diversity and innovation. M$ and Sun, Wallmart and Amazon and the others should be held to a high standard, because we are learning that Big Brother is not government.

And yet heartening is the Linux success. Created by technical vision and prowess, through a distributed and virtual community, Linux represents the power of a grass roots effort to level the playing field.

Today Linux represents the strength of the people over the corporations. Tomorrow Linux will be the server platform of choice the Internet. Sun will eventually stop competing with the people and replace Solaris with Linux in it's formidable hardware products. And they will ensure that their Java software platform is the Internet language of choice, competantly hosted on Linux to service the array of consumer devices, including Windows.

The Open Source community is wise to remember that it is freedom of choice, the abillity to innovate, and openness that is our passion. Linux is our finest offspring, which has now grown and is ready to live a life of it's own, in a corporate world. It is time for us to build upon it, but more importantly to relentlessly drive forward creating new technologies that are socially functional by empowering individuals and communities.

OPEN SOURCE JAVA! IF they won't open source it, let's write something better!

A fish vs. teaching to fish. Slashdot is a great forum for Linux users, but why not allow the creation of XDot.orgs. Personally I think that creating a tool that effects freedom of speech and Internet participation is of greater good and import than creating one great site for any one community.
Yes that would create Slashdot competitors, but have we not learned that that is a good thing? Package up the latest and greatest!

  8. San Fran tenent favoring laws on In Silicon Valley $37K/Year May Mean Public Housing · · Score: 1

San Francisco does have tenent favoring laws.

For instance, if a wannabe tenent sends in the rent check for a place with his/her name, AND the landlord cashes it, then that tenent is no longer a wanna be. As good as being on the lease.

A friend of mine was offered $15k by his landlord to move. He moved.

The death of CORBA is absurd. Due to the OMG's imperfect but democratic process, it is better now than it ever has been. This microsofty is announcing the death of CORBA due to the birth of EJB. Absurd.

Technically important, and strangely absent from the posting was the true relationship of EJB and CORBA. EJB does not replace CORBA at all! It is built on top of it. EJB uses RMI for distributed object communication, and RMI (and IIOP) have been enhanced so that the protocol of RMI IS IIOP. This means that an RMI client may make calls to a CORBA server, and vice versa.
