You are right of course. What I find really offensive is that buyers of Office (or other MS software) are subsidizing stealing that goes on rampantly in south america, africa and china. In most countries in the world MS software is freely pirated and MS does nothing about it (except expect us pay for it of course). Why don't they put copy protection or something? Maybe they like people stealing their software because the alternative is to drive people towards cheaper or free software. Something to think about, by not going agressively against stealing they deprive Wordperfect office of customers. As long as most people are honest and pay and most do then why not let the 10% steal their software. This is an better alternative then letting those 10% of the people buy a competing product or use free software.

I will be very happy when MS starts agressively defending their "rights".

You missed my point entirely didn't you.

    Here it goes again.
Sure there are honest businessmen (a few perhaps) but the guys running MS are not!. The guys running MS care only about themselves and nobody else. Once IE gets to over 90% market penetration it will probably stop listening to apache and in a few months crumble unix web servers. Nobody will put up a web site on unix if 90% of your clients can't get to it.
The linux community has no evil intent and probably would cringe at the thought of any human being who would do such a thing. Nobody has ever advocated that BIND refuse requests from windows machines or that sendmail should refuse to accept mail from outlook but every single new "innovation" from MS seeks to destroy well established standards.

This is the battle between good and evil not between greed and generosity. MS is run by evil people with evil motives and evil ways of working. This is probably why they will continue to crush everybody who gets in their way. The people who wrote bind are too moral to ever corrupt standards but the guys who wrote Active Directory have no morals and will gladly corrupt kerberos.

In the end unless the open source community becomes evil it will lose. Evil will always win because there is no line it won't cross.

  10. Re:Speak For Yourself. on Netscape 6 Fails To Support Web Standards · · Score: 2

It matters not how good the software is. Slashdot is (supposed to be anyways) a community of open source advocates and MS is the antichrist to open source.

There are plenty of web sites and communities where saying anything anti-MS will get you flamed to high heaven (zdnet, devx etc) and until recently this was the one place where somebody who believed in open source could express their point of view without being beaten up by MS shills. MS of course has managed to subvert this forum too. For the last month or so the one sure way to get a +5 rating on any comment is to bash linux or praise MS.

How good win2k is (mine crashes at least once a day BTW) is beside the point. The point is IE is evil because MS will leverage it to undermine linux, web standards, apache, http and anything else they don't like. MS is not run by nice people who care about humanity, the web, communities or you. These people are nasty evil people who got to the top by crushing anybody who got in their way. Look at the way talk for example. What kind of human being uses phrases like "knife the baby" the imagery alone makes me sick to my stomach.
Giving these people absolute control of any key technology is the same as shooting yourself in the head.

I actually don't buy that whole "the chances of an audit is nil" stuff because you have no say in the matter. If MS decides to get you they will there is nothing you can do about it. You are presumed guilty and have to prove your innocense to their satisfaction. The entire matter wholly arbitrary and you have no rights. You either have to pay up to pay the lawyers to fight them. Seeing as how MS has a HUGE legal dept and are likely to cream you in court (the law only works for the rich in this country) you are screwed. You nothing but a bitch hoe of MS. You might also consider the fact when an audit occurs it's much more then "simply" counting desktops. There WILL be lawyers involved and it's going to cost you many thousands of dollars just to make sure MS is satisfied. You are presuming that one would use Linux in a corporate environment exactly the same as windows. I don't think this is such a good idea. It would be much saner to run diskless X-Terms and one big ass server. This way you can centrally manage everything while still giving users their own customizable desktops. If a user messes something up then the sysadmin can fix it without having to walk around. That's where the real savings come in. Save on PCs by using diskless systems, save on software by using linux and save on support by having everything on just a few servers as opposed to hundreds of desktops. Also makes backup and revoery much easier.

If you went with an MS license you would have to pay per user AND per CPU for internet connections AND a per user for the NT license.
