  1. please god no more Star Trek references on Macroscopic Quantum Entanglement · · Score: 0

the reason we "laugh" at Star Trek is because it does such a dippy, ignorant, bad job of recycling the world's sf ideas, dressed up in a sappy soap opera shell and performed by the worst actors the galaxy could muster. The idea of a teleporter was not originated on the damned program. Not that this is a teleporter anyway, at best it might someday offer some sort of "simultaneous" communications - like the Ansible from Le Guinn's The Dispossed.

Every time a remotely sf idea get mentioned on it some bloody fool comes along and blabs about the uncanny similarity to Star Trek..

SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! YOU ARE BORING EVERYBODY!

  2. Katz - Have You No Sense of Decency? on The Atlas of Middle Earth · · Score: 1

sure some lickspittle will mod this down as a troll, offtopic etc.. like every other time

but isn't about time JKatz picked up his game or picked up his bags? I'm used to his self-indulgent reviews of books and movies that are months out of date - but now he reviews a book that's been available for at least a decade, and it's -- a book of MAPS for chrissake. talk about setting new (low) standards for literary content.

I enjoyed the responses to my post, thanks all. (However, no thanks to the moderator who moded it down as overrated, from 2...Presumably s/he didn't like my attitude to free speech, so they thought they'd supress it. heh) This guy Hellraiser gets the personal response though: Who's the reactionary stooge here? You seem very clear on what my overiding political ideas might be - socialist, you allege, because historically many socialists have (rightly) opposed naziism. (In fact, the happy fact that this is now a widespread view is greatly due to the hard work of socialists and the wider left-wing throughout this century. It took a while for the Right to cotton on to it when they saw it was a vote winner) Apart from that, you make no bloody sense at all. in fact, maybe you'd lile to try a post again and put some verbs in, so can understand what you're fucking on about. For your information (and for the similarly confused) Naziism isn't a farce, or a face. It is a deadly and corrosive Expression (there's that word again) of a particularly abhorant human potential, a long-standing one. Hitler didn't invent it and it didn't die with him.

how much of the rest of the posting was made up in an attempt to be funny? never mind, /.ers will just absorb it and repeat it in later postings. really, this issue of internet free speech is a doozy, always gets the punters posting. My Rights, they all squawk. i'd wager very few would know which of their rights were being upheld ot infringed at any moment - it's just some cant to advertise their "radical" attitudes. You hate Nazi's but you hate government censorship more? one poster wrote. Then you are a fool. people die and suffer under nazi attitudes to this day and they deserve better understanding than the whinging poses of pimply American students. Naziism is a real world issue, a Hate Crime, not just backstory for a computer game. It warrants criminal prosecution and anything else that governments and individuals can do to stamp it out. When the Nazis came to power in Germany, (and wherever else they've gained a foothold), they' did it with the collusion of a lot of people who thought it was best if they washed their hands of action. These people were called Appeasers. They talked a lot about Rights of Expression also. Get this - it doesn't apply to criminals, and Nazis and racists are criminals.

  6. lets trot out all the old stereotypes, shall we? on William Gibson On Japan · · Score: 2

as in: "I think the Japanese and American cultures are locked in a twisted symbiotic relationship. The Japanese are masters of perfecting technology and Americans are masters of thinking of insane new things that break the mode. Other cultures tend to be someplace in the middle" In other words, the Japanese can't invent anything (they just copy and refine, oh yes) while those crazee yanks are just the most original shit-kicking free-thinking nation in the whole world (that'd be the same Whole World as the WWF, and World Series Baseball). All other cultures are just points on the line between these two extremes? Have you ever travelled outside your own farm, boy?
