Was he an undercover MS agent? Instad of ruling in favor of MS, he acted in a way that would surely lead to have his ruling against MS overcome. He performed an sabotage against his own case.

In the III Century, Ambrosio, bishop of Milan, who "can read without uttering a sound or even move his lips" was considered a genius. (Saint Agustine, Confessions).

With the evolution of technology, new skills are developed and other skills may be lost (for example the art of caligraphy). What is today seen as an astounishing proof of intelectual skills may become a commonplace in the future. The old fashioned love letters that our grandmodthers wrote, carefully handwriten in a beautifull stationary paper, is being replaced by the faster and more impersonal e-mail.

(Anyone that has read Umberto Ecos "The Name of the Rose" will surely remember how the love that those 13th century monks puted into their books)

When I was in high school I learned (It was mandatory) to manually calculate square roots and logaritms.

The point shold be whether the skills that are lost are relevant or not in the 21st century. Does anyone need to be able manually calculate the square root of 3,14159? The role of education needs to be adapted to the new realities of technology.

I'll stick with Linux. I'm hardly an average user, though.

Thats the point. The average user, the one who until recently used a typewriter and a desk calculator and now has to work with a computer, does not care wheter the OS crashes or not, but he wants to get his work done.

For the average user, the computer is a mean to achive an objective. Its a tool, like a hammer or a screwdriver. What they care is about having their work done. They dont even know there is an alternative and if they knew, they would not care.

If Linux wants to be an alternative in the desktop market, the open source comunity has to begin to think in the average user. They have to see them work, to listen to their needs, to understand what they want and to think like them.

If a culture believes that pornography is bad and the government of that culture enacts laws to curb it, is it really oppression?

As long as there is one person who disagrees with that belief, its oppression.

The broad acceptance of some belief by a culture does not give the right to impose it to all the members of that culture.

The culturally accepted beliefs that some races/religions/ideas were inferior laid the foundations for intolerance, religious/political persecutions, racism, etc, etc.

  5. Re:What I find alarming... on Microsoft Admits To Backdoor In IIS [updated] · · Score: 1

Lets assume for a while that Micro$oft, as a company, did not know of the backdoor. Verification of the code, checking and testing the sofware are essential steps in any Software Developmente cycle, part of the entire Software Engienering process. If the backdoor went undetected into the final product, it means that the entire proccess of Software Development is unreliable. And this is definitely a Companys fault. Probably as a way to speed up the release of new products, the Corporate Policies for Software Development sacrify the exhaustive testing and verification needed to ensure the quality of their products. They sell anyway, so why wasting time and money. Thats really scary, regardless of whether M$ knew or not of the backdoor.

  6. Re:But they used the BSD TCP stack... on Open Source Is Bad [updated] · · Score: 1

The problem is that MS is saying that open source is bad, but they use open source in their products. If you say that it is bad, you dont use it in private, do you? This is called a LIE and is just another example of MS way of doing bussines. Josef Goebbels is an 8 years old kid compared to MS folks.
