  1. Tiered Pricing on Preventing Broadband Price-Gouging? · · Score: 1
I would gladly pay extra for higher bandwidth. I know I use alot of down/up bandwidth. Its why I subscribed to high speed internet in the first place. I also understand that some people don't use at much. So we shouldn't be forced the same price nor the same limitations. To charge a flat price is ridiculous for any service.

The same can be applied to cell phones. Not everyone gets/needs 2 gajillion whenever minutes (thank you Jamie Lee Curtis). You buy whats right for you.

of course as I've been noticing recently, the reliability of this service would be more appreciated than any increase in speed. When its 3 in the morning and my ping to a server within my own state is over 200, my blood pressure rises.

  3. anyone think about the Environment? on Limited-Use DVD Technology · · Score: 2, Insightful

normally I'm not a environment type of guy but the same thought occured to me when divx came out as now. theres going to be a huge amount of waste from this. is it really neccesary to make a big landfill of non-useable discs just so Blockbuster can compete with PPV?

sigh. my brain hurts from corporate stupidity.

    $10 a chip

    $1.52 Billion in potential profits

    1) POTENTIAL. Like other posters have said, cable companies cap (limit) the amount of bandwidth users can have. There is little incentive on their side to get this.

    2) PATENDED. When you hear people say market share, this is what they're talking about. Rainmaker is at the forefront of a ground breaking technology, so their the first to the treasure chest.

My only hope for this is that cable companies will implement it. I understand that they have no incentive, however if they did they may raise my cap to say 2mb/1mb dl/up. So technically they've increased my bandwidth, likely will increase my bill, and still have extra bandwidth for other customers.

its not going to happen soon but hey it might :)

  5. Editing Photos on Do Digital Photos Endanger History? · · Score: 2, Interesting

While I agree the data storage is an important thing to remember, optical photos are just as easily destroyed.

what I think is interesting in the use of digital photos is not that there taking over but that they are so easily edited. While admittely editing a optical photo isn't that hard now we all admit that a digital photo can be done by anyone. Clicking that Ex-boyfriend/girlfriend out of the picture has never been easier.

    imho

"Oh this won't hurt anyone, and saving that extra 'OK' click will be great!".

joe user might not know what .hqx is or does. is it safe or is it malicious code? well malicious coders aren't going to name the hqx files "thiswillhurtyoucomputer.hqx". secondly the people who would be surfing sites where this is a danger would be kids who don't nor won't take the time to investigate if a warning is presented.

as stated in another post disabling this is really the only approach but that limits honest deployments of .hqx files. sigh. can't we all just get along!!!

  8. when upgrading means the life of the product on When Forced "Upgrades" Bring You Down · · Score: 1

if your someone who buys software often you are well aquainted with going to the companies website and downloading patches, updates, etc. However what happens when these updates are nessacary for the continued operation of the product. Take the example of Quake 3 Arena While there is a single player mode to the game it is market as an online game. And the only way to keep playing is to install all the patches. What if id decided to charge say $5 for each update. I'm not saying id would but company marketers drooling over this. Think of it. To keep using the product you have to keep paying for it. That is a companies dream. To have an absolute control over its market and to keep that market. Why do comics always have to be continued at the end? So you'll buy the next one. The more they make it necessary for you to buy the next installment the more money they can make. Which brings me back to online products. With continuing changes no one can make perfect software. This keeps the market for patches open. Whether companies making products dependent on patches it is only logical that sooner or later they will begin charging for it. you think thats crazy? What about services calls for your non computer products? Are those free?
