Meanwhile all the procedures, beauracracy, and politics of the business have been solidified and set in stone over the years making it damn near impossible for anyone to change anything even if they wanted. So when the Internet revolutionized everything, taking the above into account, it's not too hard to see why these guys were unable to respond effectively.

They could have left out a couple of seats and made some extra room, but no, that would impact their bottom line too much. How the fuck is it *my* responsibility to know the exact measurements of every airplane I might potentially get on, and measure my bag to ensure it fits? Isn't that the airline's job? "Should", and "fault", have nothing at all to do with it. The fact is if your government does something evil, someone (probably you) will suffer, either now or later. It's also a fact that they will do this unless YOU (citizen) do something about it, because nobody else is going to. Therefore, yes, it could be concluded that it's your "fault" if they do something evil, if you choose to not even speak your mind (thus broadcasting your opinion to others) to combat it.
But regardless of whose fault it is, the fact still remains that momentum applies to politics just as much as to an asteroid floating through space. If if you do nothing to help chip away at that momentum through whatever means at your disposal, then you have to simply be content with where gravity decides to take things.
