But they are not legislating technology into existence; the technology is here now. I can go by a non-hybrid car with four seats that get over 60mpg today.
If the people were serious about being safe when driving they would insist on the driving test being more difficult to pass, ie, actually test a person's driving ability, and take away the license of people who have proven that they are bad driver much sooner than is done now.
Faith is something you believe with no evidence, or despite evidence contrary to that belief. A normal person's belief that the sun is a big fusing ball of mainly hydrogen does not require any faith. You can look up lots of evidence, do you own experiments, learn some physics, that in turn can be corroborated by your own experiments. This path would be a bit extreme, but should be sufficient to help even a skeptic to believe the sun is in fact a large fusing ball of gas. A rational belief doesn't require 100% certainty. Outside of math and logic nothing can be known with 100% certainty.
Why would you need faith to accept your memories are real when it is so easy to test. You could survey people about past events you remember, you could write things down and compare to you memory later, you could video stuff... I'm sure you could move from faith to belief in only a few weeks of experimentation.
Metaphysics is fun to debate and read, but has very little bearing on the real world. Our best evidence that the world is real is that we all see the same world. All dreams are private. I think it is important to explore questions like "how do we know what is real"; it isn't bullshit, but it can rarely be used to argue against realism and empirical evidence with a straight face.
Many religious people have faith in God. I believe evolution is a fact, and that the Theory of Natural Selection is the current best explanation for this fact. Belief is not blind faith. Belief is something you think is true due to some sort of evidence.
Note: evolution is a fact because it has so much evidence supporting it: the fossil record, selective breeding, genetic engineering, etc... The Theory of Natural Selection is the best theory we have come up to explain the fact of evolution, just like Newton's "Laws" of gravity were the best theory explaining the fact of gravity until Einstein came along.
You could say the same about any news organization that reports on facts that are embarrassing to the current powers whether they be governments or large corporations.
Well there is a difference. Using genetic engineering we can choose to make our babies "better". Previous methods involved culling babies, children, and even adults which is morally wrong. I don't see any moral issues with tweaking an embryo to gave the child a better life.
Will we always make choices that are better? Only time will tell.
Most life insurance is a one time payment. You can invest it, but generally it would not provide 50% of your salary for 10 years. I would call it a small pension.
Typical company life insurance is double your current salary paid in one lump sum. Ten years at 50% is five times your salary.
I'v never heard of life insurance that pays out for a decade. My company life insurance is a one time payment of twice my salary, or four years of the google death benefit which seems more like a pension than insurance to me.
Your premise has been tried, and it failed. It turns out that people who cooperate to build roads, sewers, armies, and the other trappings of modern states have much better standards of living than those living in the state of nature you advocate. Just look at Somalia.
If every person on the planet was, good, kind, intelligent, and hard working then the anarchy you proposed would work great, but that is not how the real world is.
Apparently, some nerds live in the USA, and who is running the government affects their ability to play with computers due to various laws these politicians pass.
Our police post most of their big speed traps, etc... on their web site so the local news can spread the word. Our police are trying to make the roads safer, not collect fines. Part of this might be because all the fines go into the province's general revenue, not to the police or city.
The USA constitution doesn't give Americans any rights. The USA constitution says you already have all those rights, plus any we didn't think to write down, and reminds the government to NOT abridge any of these rights that you already have simply because you are a human being.
Driving is not a right because the law says it is so dangerous that you need to be licensed to do it.
If your tv is over 40" then blueray can make a noticeable difference in picture quality. Below 40" the pixels are too small to make any visible difference. My living room is too small for a giant tv, so a regular dvd looks great on my 34" widescreen CRT.
Sorry, but the bush administration wasn't as bright as you you give them credit for. The Neo-Cons surrounding Bush honestly thought that removing Saddam would lead to a spontaneous uprising, the embracing of modern democratic ideals, and a stable USA friendly government.
Yes, their ardent political beliefs and general ignorance were that deep and broad.
If you are trying to discuss legal matters then words like "theft" have very particular meanings. Legally, theft means you have done something so that the legal owner of an object has been deprived of its use. Generally this means taking away a physical object. It also means you did it without personal violence. If you use violence then it is robbery.
Copyright infringement is not theft because you are making a copy and leaving the legal owner of the original with all his legal belongings.
Copyright is an artificial monopoly granted by governments to artists- it is not a generally recognized right.
Artists do not have the right to control the distribution of their work. Copyright is a completely artificial construct of the government meant to encourage the creation of art by giving the artist a limited monopoly on copying his work. Copyright is an artificial restriction on your RIGHT to copy things. When I make a copy I do not deprive the artist, or anyone else, of anything.
I think copyright is a good idea if it is limited to a reasonable time like 10 or 20 years. The current copyright limits, reduced fair use, trying to collect royalties at private weddings, and other restrictions are an obscene abuse of a once good idea.
I switched to CFL's over 15 years ago, and except for the kitchen all of them lasted at least 8 years. And, half them were replaced because they were just getting too dim, but still working.
Low carb diets work because they are also low calorie. An extreme low carb diet can be bad for you, but most "mainstream" low carb diets won't do any harm.
You are wrong. It does not take meat a week to be digested. All foods take 24 to 72 hours to complete their journey through the digestive system. You will get more or less nutrients from foods depending on how easy it is to extract the nutrients, but the trip takes the same time. Some foods have to be cooked to get any nutrition from them. Some foods are better eaten raw as the heat of cooking will destroy the nutrients. Know your foods. Most meat should be cooked. Many beans and grains should be cooked. Most fruit and many vegetables are best eaten raw.
Colon cleanses are not needed for your health and are more likely to harm you than do any good. Your natural processes do a fine of job of keeping your digestive track clean and healthy.
Almost all bottled water is local municipal water that has been filtered, bottled, allowed to sit in a warehouse for a month then truck tot he store. The water coming out of your tap is better, lower bacteria counts etc... than bottled water in most of the 1st world.

Who cares about a spook being outed? The spook and her family. Outing Plame was a lot more reckless than anything Wikileaks ever did.
What is reckless about wikileaks?

Diesel is generally cheaper than gasoline in my part of Canada. It is taxed less to keep trucking costs down.
Survey without religion bias And 64% of Americans would hold onto a religious belief even if it was contradicted by clear science and evidence. In 2009 a survey showed only 4 in 10 Americans believed in evolution.
That is pretty bad.
My anecdote next!

In the 1st world bottled water is a scam.
