some people prefer redhat but it does a lot of stuff for you automatically like windows would

slackware isnt the easiest to learn, but i beleive its the most beneficial in the end. it requires you to do more work on install, but once you get it were you like it, it stays that way :)

now last time i check cable and dsl were billed the same way pretty much, $20 rental for line, and $20 for the actual isp service. so you could pay the $20 for the line and pay $20 to another isp with a less restricve tos. as silly as this sounds a good friend of mine who never owned a computer finaly got one, but to her suprise got a free year of aol with it. she expected to have to shell out $20 a month anyways, so now she has aol over cable modem.

Microsoft not getting these out by x-mas time is realy just a bad idea. The amount of money they have spent on their console game vs income will show on their 2001 financial reports.

now imagine 9 million grandma's all at their local store fighting to get there grandson/daughter one of theese machine. This would make Microsoft look good come year end, and get more people to buy stock.

do i personaly think they will get it out before x-mas? how man years late was nt5.0? 4? almost 5?

  13. Not me! Im not affected! on Security Issues For Many Alcatel DSL Modems · · Score: 3
What suprises me from all theese results is the "Not me!" "Im not affected" "Those bastards!"

I think what people dont realize is this affects everyone. some kid who looses his irc channel #NetPimps.are.us on EFnet wants it back, but an ircop refuses to help, because he's net sexing his girlfriend. so this 9 yr old on ten gallons of jolt fires up nmap with os fingerprinting, and creates a script to test to see if he can comprise the router, set its own password, and fires up yet another script, to have all theese people with poarly secured routers start dossing the ircop, the ircops efnet server, and the other 9 yr olds who took his channel.

But oh no! "Its not me" isp uses the same backbone as theese routers, and gee, how bad would 5,000 dsl modems running ping -f -s 9999 slow down a network?

suddenly, your all affected by this poar security

i think people need to stop shruging things off like this and work together, if you want to flood something, whats better? 1 user or 100 users?

if you want something fixed, whats better? 1 user complaining? or 100 users complaining?

  14. Firewire, USB, and Microsoft on FireWire For Windows XP, But No USB 2.0 · · Score: 1
I used to be against USB with a passion, i basicaly read a couple of articles that said there was no set standard. i then aquired an Iomega Hipzip, and was suprised as to how easy it was to get it working with linux, and the difference in time to send files to the hipzip, vs. a rio on paralel port. USB seems like a cheap hot swap on the other hand Firewire is suppost to be even faster, but it seems as if it uses the same type of connectors or what not? and it seems that firewire devices in general are much more expensive. If indeed (let me know) USB and Firewire use the same connetor, why cant Firewire cards/ports on computers support backwards compatibility? and what role does Apple play in this whole deal? do they own any patents? is microsoft going to try to change, or, like the usualy do, make their own standards?

while this may seem like a smart move by micosoft im certain they have something dirty up their sleeve, or someone who loves Firewire with a lot of money, has graciously donated something to the redmond boys

I read this article much earlier on my dad's fridge. He had cut this clipping out of the paper for my uncle, a harley rider. from most of the comments i've seen they're all concerned about fuel this and fuel that. Both my father and my uncle like to ride motorcycles, and as in the case of this gentleman, i think that it was more of a customization, something he had that no one else did to make his motorcycle more unique then others sometime people on slashdot tend to over analyze everything down to every technical bone. sometimes its just nice to sit back and go "Neat!"

besides all, how much money do you spose McDonals is going to give him for a similar model painted red for Ronald to ride around?
