  1. Crappy PC games ? on Michael Abrash On X-Box Graphics · · Score: 2

but look at how much crap is released for PCs that would never sell on a console

Well, having a couple of friends realy into the N64 scene, and thus having seen a lot of games that were made for the N64. Let me just tell you that there are far more "low cost, quick and dirty" titles on consoles that on the PC. There is a virtual infinity of crappy japanese games out there. Another example is the Dreamcast, one of the first title released on it was "Pen-Pen" (a racing games except with a peguin), which clearly would never have existed on the PC market, yet it was one of the best selling titles.

Now don't take me wrong there are numerous excellent game on consols, probably considering all the different consols more than on PCs.

I think the trick Mircosoft will run to is how to keep licensed X-Box developpers from releasing games on the PC as well. Because it's the game that sell the consol and not the other way around (I bought my Playstation just for Wipeout).

Well first the $95 is only for the Chip, so it will have to be assembled into a NIC, which will raise price a bit (still way less expensive than what is currently available).

About hubs and switches. If I understand the press release right, their chip is pretty much a big DSP, and can/will be used with NICs, Hubs, Switches. Of course the main probleme for GigSwitches is the backplane speed, just try and imagine the internal speed of a 24port GigSwitch (24x1000MB = Arghh ! ).

But I think the main problem we will see around is for implementation in current networks. Because I remember reading a while back about the lack of "true" specs for Cat5. Mostly, that you can find Cat5 in different copper diameter. And having a lot of different "brand" of Cat5 on the network may be quite a pain to diagnose the problems.
Still it's pretty impressive that they were able to nudge 40m more into the specs.

I'm really looking forward to getting GigNICs and good street prices.

Somebody befor mentioned that helicopters could now be manufactured in large numbers and if that happened they wouldn't cost that much. Well let's just remember that maintnance cost on those babies are incredible. For one thing the security checks are a lot more demanding on somthing that is going to fly over your head, than on cars for example. If your car breaks down, you can simply pull it on the side of the road, but if you're actually flying, well, it just hurts a tiny wee bit more when you finaly hit the side of the road.
Just remember that a chopper goes through a complete engin check every 30'000 flight hours, and on a turbine engin the *simple* check can cost you all the way up to 15k.

  23. Simply incredible on Why Kids Kill · · Score: 1

I've been reading a good portion of the follow-ups here (which takes quite a while .. ;) )

And One recurring thing that stings me to the bone is that ppl still think that is normal to carry an item that has been made for one purpose and one purpose only, killing. You can give it whatever name you want, "gun, semi-automatic, shotgun", it's original design is still the same, destroy/break/kill/maim the subject aimed.

Now I do understands that it is Constitutional to bare a gun, and it's every American's right too.
But did anyone ever consider that since the time were your brave forefathers fought their way free, time has quite changed, in fact more than 220 years have passed. And the chances that a neighboring country decides to make a Colony out of New York, is ...quite improbable...

So know that we've got these facts down, I'm not saying that if there were stronger laws on gun
control, the Denver shooting wouldn't have happened, those kids may have used "legal or easier to get" weapons, but with a stronger set of laws, they could also have been cough doing so.
But what I'm getting at, is that they might have killed less kids in there attack, if for example they we're not using semi-automatics (as one of you pointed out, semi-automatics give you a better aim if not a better firing rate). It's just an example as dumb as the next, but still if 3,4 even 5 more lives were saved, that would mean a lot, and if you don't think so, try explaining your point of vue to the victim's parents.

Another one of you pointed out that on of the murderers' father was a marine, and that no amount of gun control could have stop him access to his daddy's private reserve.
Well it's probably right, but in any case just loops back to what I was saying in the beginning of my rant, that If you don't educate children that guns are simply note a solution, it's barely an excuse for hunting, and that the only use for the public would be for sport competition, then I can guarantee you that those kind of massacres would simply not be possible.

I'll just add to this fairly long rant of mine, that I live in Switzerland, a country that has a militia type of army. What that means is that every adult male citizen (and a couple of crazy few females) have at home an Assault riffle, with ammo, gas masks, and the likes. But I've been brought up, as most of my friends to "dislike" guns because of their single minded purpose, to destroy/break/kill/maim
