Doing anything even partially-censorable in an open-source code isn't precisely a good idea. People would know about it! Mainly in popular repositories with a relevant number of contributors. This is the theory, at least. I have been seeing more and more people mostly interested in talking generally, copy-pasting, relying on a few absolute truths + attacking any idea even slightly different, mainly caring about what their friends say or the number of stars/upvotes, etc.; but not too willing, not looking like being too interested in and perhaps not able to really understand/deliver virtually any sample of even slightly complex code.
In any case, this seems as a quite bad move: bad publicity for the company supporting it and for the programmer performing the action. Additionally, the impact of whatever fishy goal you might be after is likely to be minimised. On the other hand, I haven't ever done any kind of fishy anything while developing software, so perhaps I am missing some underlying wisdom.
(Anectdote which has happened to me right now only slightly related with this thread)
Although I have various versions of Visual Studio on my main computer, I usually rely on VS 2012. I have been using that exact version during the last years quite regularly, mostly when programming in.NET languages (mainly C# and VB.NET for desktop applications). During the lasts months, I have been using VS only sporadically and, when using it again, I have been seeing slight changes with respect to its previous behaviour (what I don’t recall having ever seen before with this or any other previous VS version)! It might be taking too long to start, some secondary configurations being different or even having new details which I didn’t see before (but present in newer VS versions). Note that I haven’t consciously updated this VS version since a quite long time ago (not counting the fact of installing newer-but-theoretically-independent VS versions on the same computer).
What does all this have to do with this thread? It is about Python, a language where the difference tabs/spaces matters unlikely what happens with the.NET languages I use (I discovered what I will be telling now while dealing with C#, Class Library project type). In any case, I do have my personal preferences regarding dealing with indentation when required (bear in mind that VS takes automatically care of this issue in quite a few scenarios): I prefer tabs. I have always used tabs without any problem (= without having to look at the configuration of the editor) in all the VS versions and any other IDE/editor (e.g., Eclipse, Notepad++, NetBeans, CodeBlocks, etc.). Today, I have been unable to use tabs in Visual Studio 2012 (for the first time ever)!! I was modifying a part of an existing code and relocating it such that the automatic VS indentation wasn't working; when I pressed tabs to put it where I wanted, it did work (behaved as if I was pressing spaces)!! I insist: this has happened to me for the first time ever, after having been using Visual Studio pretty regularly for over the last 7 years and this specific VS 2012 version for over the last 2 years! I fixed it quite quickly (in Options -> Text Editor -> All Languages -> Tabs, I selected "Keep tabs"; note that I found all the options in that window unselected), but I found it really curious and worth sharing.
I think is pretty good and I want some level of protection on it. My ego demands it.
I wasn't trying to convince everyone to rely on a format which works for me (mostly via code samples of my work by being hired to develop whatever), but perhaps not for others. I was simply clarifying the difference between using what is publicly/unlimitedly available, stealing and copyright. Additionally, this is a pretty complex reality; for example, SoundCloud aren't the authors of the songs and their copyright claims are about restricting the redistribution of what others created.
Stealing my ideas and claiming them as your own is also an affront to my humanity.
Freely using/sharing what is public and unlimited is different than stealing or unfairly claiming the authorship of what you didn't create.
Since some time ago, all my public online activity can be considered public domain. You can freely use any of my stuff with no restriction and without having to refer me as its author (it would be nice though). A different story is you unfairly claiming to be the author; in that case, you would be lying or even stealing.
PS: just the idea is usually worth pretty much nothing.
There are multiple issues which make almost impossible to deliver accurate enough conclusions regarding the overall programming language popularity. Some examples: huge variety of environments (e.g., web, desktop, mobile, embedded systems, etc.), tasks (algorithm-focused development, GUI-focused developments, additions/extensions on existing software, automation of programming-related actions, etc.), etc. Additionally, such an outcome wouldn't make too much sense as far as all the (modern) programming languages are pretty similar. Their minor differences are only truly relevant under highly demanding conditions and when being used by experienced enough programmers, situations where generic samples of knowledge are pretty much useless (expecting experts to take seriously generic samples of knowledge while doing their work?!).
Kind-of-useful alternatives might be: comprehensive enough surveys asking experienced programmers about the pros/cons of different languages or benchmarks telling the objectively weak/strong points of some of languages under well-defined conditions. Even in these cases, the resulting information would be pretty meaningless; similarly to what happens with any attempt at coming up with dumbed-down explanations about the reasons for specialised actions happening without wanting to get a proper understanding about the whole situation. Experienced programmers should mainly trust in their opinion (+ the conditions under which they work more comfortably). Not-too-knowledgeable people shouldn’t try to make knowledge-based decisions without the input of experts. Everyone should focus on adequately analysing their specific conditions and not expecting generic-always-working solutions which rarely exist.
- I only get warnings when logged-in users reply to my posts. So, if you reply to any of my comments as an AC, I might not even be aware about it.
- The Spanish being used in Spain, in other Spanish-speaking country and the one taught in non-Spanish-speaking countries might differ a lot. Mainly, when dealing with slang, familiar expression or even implicit meanings associated with the given culture. For me, "Los Pollos Delicados" has pretty much no direct/implicit meaning.
- From the context of this whole discussion and what seems your intention, I understand that you are trying to imply that I take things personally too easily or that I complain a lot and for almost no reason. This is certainly not the case. This was an explanations-intensive thread (as explained somewhere, not precisely meant to help me but others) and this is plainly what I have done. I also think that certain easily-understood-as-acceptable behaviours are pernicious (again, not precisely for myself but in general) and I do tend to react pretty aggressively against them, just as a way to contribute towards its eradication. People getting offended by my reactions to what they started are the ones being "delicados" here (-> you shouldn’t start something if you are not willing to deal with its consequences).
- You seriously thinking that your comment belongs to the same league, even to the same sport, even to the same type of sport, etc. than the excellent sample written by that other AC tells a lot about your lacks: you are just not having, but also not being aware about that fact. You should better focus on accepting yourself and what you have (and not), before moving to anything else.
I am speechless with your last references! I thought that it was a common approach in almost any country to legally force everyone to help others in danger. In my country (Spain), this obligation seems (info from a quick internet research) to be divided into 4 sub-categories which can be roughly translated to: not helping someone in danger (3-12 months in jail); not asking for help when you are not in a position to help someone in danger (3-12 months in jail); not helping someone in a traffic accident which you provoked (6-18 months in jail), what doesn't compensate your responsibility for having provoked that accident; medical staff obligated to help someone and not doing so might be charged for up to negligent homicide.
I personally don't care too much about legislation forcing me to do what is right, because I would do it anyway. On the other hand, legal/governmental bodies are precisely meant to set ground rules ensuring everyone's actions to respect the common good; and helping someone in danger seems pretty basic stuff on this front. Some weeks ago, I saw this shocking video (and I am not precisely an easily-shockable person) about a woman being run over twice without anyone helping her! After seeing it, the first idea coming to my mind was precisely "how can all these people not do anything even just to avoid going to jail?"; I couldn't believe that a legal system (not even in China!) might not have regulations of this kind.
BTW, this [slashdot.org] is an example from yesterday of trolling
Pretty hard stuff! But I guess that it isn't precisely too hurtful for you. This guy/gal seems to have quite a few "issues". I don't belong to any group being the typical target of irrational hate and this might be the reason why I don't have too much experience with trolls. I have seen idiots saying some incoherent nonsense, but I am usually the one being more aggressive in those situations; although I never do anything on the lines of what you are showing, never anonymously (to attack other person? How can you do such a thing without feeling tremendously ashamed of yourself?) and always as a reaction (the given stupid arbitrarily attacked me in the first place). I mostly focus on their limited knowledge, understanding capabilities, principles, self-esteem, etc., usually by adding some humorous bits (which they rarely get). But just writing a set of generic insults, by doing it anonymously and without any provocation? I will never get it!
You don't know what an internet troll is? Or is that a misinterpretation of my phrase "inner troll"?
People call everyone troll too easily these days and for whatever reason. This was pretty much my point. On the other hand, I am not too sure about the exact meaning of "trolling" used in the internet context, in the sense of having never had such urges. It seems that it involves randomly bothering others for the sole reason of bothering (and/or to release own frustration), a concept which is extremely difficult for me to grasp. I have never felt the need to do such a thing. I have never felt belittled by others. I accept my failures and all the actions on which I have no control; I don't think that I have never felt frustration. Sometimes, I might feel sadness or pity or (aggressive) passion, but my behaviour will always aim to help/correct rather than to arbitrarily damage others or gratuitously release anger.
The rest of your post talks about what you have gone through and about how this has made you stronger. I am always happy to read about people growing stronger and more self-aware. The higher is your self-confidence, the more likely is that you will have a positive impact on society and others. I understand that you say all this to somehow help me (-> see? Strong people tend to have a positive impact on others) and, hopefully, this will not demotivate you but I don't exactly need it. Although I understand that some people might have serious problems to understand it, my position is surprisingly comfortable. I think that the key idea is not needing what many other people do (I always say about myself that, by applying the-less-you-need-the-richer-you-are interpretation, I am the richest person I know). When you see some of my behaviours you are automatically assuming things which don't really apply to me. For example, you think that I over-explain to somehow protect myself, but my motivation is right the contrary: I want to avoid people to hurt themselves or to be in a position which they might not like. If I was only thinking about myself, I wouldn't have said a word.
Anyway, it was a nice conversation. Thanks for all your help and meaning so well. See you around.
I'm hesitant to call it a disorder and nothing else, but it does come with problems.
Personally, I think that it comes with advantages rather than with problems. I think that most of the disadvantages are made up by a fearful and short-sighted society. In any case, note that I had some bad past experiences regarding all this and that's why I am not too interested in getting involved in a conversation on these lines. For what matters here: I have never been diagnosed with any of the "disorders" you refer and I think that this should also have been the case of everyone else; I think that parents/society should worry about kids having real problems rather than just being slightly different (but tolerant, honest, never bothering others, etc.), because they might be doing more harm than good.
Additionally, you (and people in your situation) should bear in mind that part of everyone's growing process is to know themselves properly regardless of what any other person says. Everyone has problems or, at least, this is what they think. Everything is a matter of perspective: feeling bored or not being invited to whatever event might be the end of the world for some people; but others would happily have those problems in exchange of stop feeling hunger or living in a war zone. Some problems seem easily correctable; they might even be made-up problems which can stop being there at will.
"Sperging"! LOL. Do you mean knowing what I am talking about, understanding everything without getting randomly distracted, laughing at the incoherent nonsense that bully-wannabees repeat to feel validated by any random group of idiots and having lots of fun while doing all this? Yes, this is exactly what I am doing.
No idea what is that and no interest in finding it out, but good to know about it anyway.
+1 funny mods aren't supposed to increase karma
Seriously? This is extremely unfair. Luckily for me, Slashdot users don't seem to appreciate my humour, so I have no problems on this front.
If you take down-mods seriously, you're doing it wrong. Laugh.
I don't take seriously almost anything. But I do like the site and its moderation system and some times feel like contributing to keep it unmotivated-downmods free.
People are bored.
Sounds tough, poor people.
everyone on the Internet has an inner troll just waiting to be released
Don't look at me. I am still not even sure about the exact meaning of "internet troll".
4. A quick review of your posting history shows that you kind of fail at sarcasm in other discussions as well, and then, like here, have to explain things. Maybe sarcasm just isn't your thing? There are other forms of humour you could try...
It seems that you are still not getting the point of my post. It was meant to help understand how to spot sarcasm to those having problems on this front. The first paragraph was a mere sample. I did have had some misunderstandings here at quite a few points, but I think that the problems is that my target audience is too small and this site/internet is too big. I rarely have understanding problems with kind-of-like-me people, having equivalent humour or even those knowing me. I have problems here where a relevant number of people don't get the ideas right; in most of the cases, they don't even read the posts completely and some of mine are a bit intricate. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, but I am fine with my personality and humour as it is right now.
Sarcasm is a weapon
No doubt on that. In fact, some people think that eventually I have too aggressive sarcasm-intensive reactions. But this post was pretty neutral and I was expecting it to be almost ignored. So many comments, so many aggressive attitudes, the downvotes... the whole thing was completely unexpected. Not exactly a problem (the aforementioned poor persons feeling bored! These are the ones having serious problems! LOL), but I was asking out of pure curiosity.
Maybe make funny jokes instead of rambling walls of autism
Perhaps I thought that I could do whatever I felt like doing. Thanks for helping me understand that I was wrong. From now on, I will always do whatever you, random AC, consider that I should do.
Warning for my students: this will be part of the exam.
Down-modded twice? Why? Seriously, I am completely lost with all what is happening around this post. People randomly attacking me, getting angry and now -2? For taking advantage of an innocent jokish paragraph to help whomever needing it to get (my) humour right in the future?! Can please someone explain what is going on here?
It was clearly sarcasm. Weren't you able to detect sarcasm?
Well, this would be certainly ironic: the self-appointed professor not being able to recognise what he is teaching. Luckily for me, I also laugh at irony. LOL. Sorry, but I don't see any sarcasm there. That AC took two of my comments, merged them and performed a minor modification with which was apparently trying to attack me.
Do you have problems to get context/sarcasm right? Do you need a tutorial on how to detect sarcasm on slashdot?
No. What kind of sarcasm professor would I be if I needed that? LOL. Seriously now, I don't understand all these reactions. I was just trying to be helpful, what I wrote might be evident but some people keep falling for the same. It is perfectly understandable with me because some times I bring things a bit too far. But what I don't understand is why getting so angry? Why not plainly ignoring my post?
I am not sure if you are the same AC, but if not you should get in touch with another one in a comment below. S(he) is looking for members for a group of something (to bash minorities or shout for no reason or perhaps just behaving in the most pathetically way ever; I am sure that you will like it). Say "dude" to highlight that I recommended you.
(was under the impression that already replied to this post, but apparently I didn't)
The whole point was to give some graphical example showing how easily could misinterpretations be avoided (at least, when dealing with me). For the future and in general, for people need that kind of information. I wasn't expecting so many reactions so far away from what I thought that might be logical. If I knew that, I wouldn't haven't had written anything. Anyway...
Sorry but your aspie-driven speech is prejudicious. You cannot treat people generically by assuming that a given generic feature has a certain behaviour associated. This is the same than racism, xenophobia or transphobia (perhaps you know something about that?). Just FYI, I haven't ever been diagnosed with the Asperger syndrome; but even if I was, this is only relevant for kids (or for adults which, unluckily for them, were diagnosed as kids and grew into how to call them... Asperger-aware adults?!). Adults/people belonging to similar groups behave completely differently, thinking otherwise is against many things in which I am sure that you believe. If I don't like what you say, it would be because of you, not because of the country you come from, your race, your genetic features, your sexual orientation, etc.
Again sorry for apparently not having been able to transmit my intention right, but the whole point of that post was helping people to get future jokes fine. The first paragraph was just an example to transmit the ideas clearly. I don't know what to say! I didn't want to provoke all this.
Ah! Sorry, I might have missed the point where I started this conversation with a random anonymous individual generically defining me (by presumably thinking that is attacking me).
Please check all that apply to you:
Sure, no problem. I am here just for doing what you want me to do! How can anything of this be considered as an attack! My fault! What I was thinking? Not doing all what you say me to do. Sorry, sir.
British w/ terminally elabourate sense of humour
I am not exactly a grammar nazi, but I am pretty sure that elabourate isn't a word (the "ou" trick works in quite a few context, but not always). Also bear in mind that I am a Spaniard, so this would be Spanish humour (-> see? Here you can do it). I am afraid that you misunderstood my post (I guess that you don't have aspergers and that's why everything distracts you and even reading a simple text is too much for you; did a fly come into your room where you were at it or perhaps another person appeared and you had to win his approval before continuing reading? Sorry for having missed that bit). The joke was the first paragraph; not exactly a joke, a non-serious statement. The other paragraphs were meant to help people with understanding-problems (you seem an excellent candidate) to get the meaning of the first paragraph right. Read the post again; people like you usually need to read a text various times before fully understanding it.
Ich habe das Pergers Syndroem
German isn't your strongest suit either, eh? Perhaps you meant Aspergers. See, "das" is a German article which cannot replace the starting part of the noun to which it complements. So, you should have written das Aspergers.
By following your orders (because apparently I have aspergers and this is what we always do: blindly follow orders of random people because we do need to feel validated by those doing everything much worse than we do -> this is sarcasm; I know that without that clarification you wouldn't have got it), I cannot chose any of these options. As said, this wasn't (much) humour and certainly not British (although written in kind-of British English, simply because I learned in the UK). I haven't ever been diagnosed with the Asperger's Syndrome, even though random "people" anonymously talking to me in internet might decide other thing.
Thanks for having confirmed my preliminary assumptions: you have serious problems. Hopefully, you aren't been trusted with anything relevant to anyone. Sorry about all the pain you must be feeling every second of your life (might I feel sorry for your sad behaviour/expectations despite being an aspie?).
Dude, you seem kind of lost. Do you need help to find your group of fanatics or do you need help to create a new one? What about putting an ad somewhere? Something like "Idiot with low self-esteem is looking for a group of people to repeat random nonsense to feel somehow validated. We might also hate/attack other groups or random people. All the communications will be anonymous".
Perhaps it was a bit too long (note that I am the original author of that wall of text, that AC has plainly copied-pasted parts of my comments for a reason which I don't know), but it came out like that. If I knew that it would be provoking so many reactions, I wouldn't have written it! Ideally, you should try to avoid getting random parts from walls of text because you might be missing a very important part: the context (what this whole post was about, BTW).
having never had any contact with illegal issues/people
This bit which surprises you was meant to be an extreme case; meaning: even in the non-realising scenario that the reader might be in such a situation, (s)he should have known that...

Are you still sperging about something?
"Sperging"! LOL. Do you mean knowing what I am talking about, understanding everything without getting randomly distracted, laughing at the incoherent nonsense that bully-wannabees repeat to feel validated by any random group of idiots and having lots of fun while doing all this? Yes, this is exactly what I am doing.
I raise you one 'just trying to be helpful'.
pink page of death
There are other forms of humour you could try ...
I know that I shouldn't have done that because it is very prejudicious, but I have LOLed a lot. Very, very funny (but wrong).
PS: congrats for the signature too.
Wow! You are my best student so far! I am so proud of myself (I taught you really well).
I am not sure with how many fanatic ACs I am dealing here, but you are certainly sick. Seek some help before damaging yourself or others.
ATTACKED you?
All the communications will be anonymous".
having never had any contact with illegal issues/people
This bit which surprises you was meant to be an extreme case; meaning: even in the non-realising scenario that the reader might be in such a situation, (s)he should have known that...
