It also is odd since there is so much good modern music out there, even if it isn't Mtv ready RIAA label crap that is being ignored for rebellious "nostalgia".

Good modern music seldom makes it onto the radio. Whereas good "classic" rock, which became popular in an era where DJs had far more control over what they played, is still played on the radio today. That's one reason why stuff like Zeppelin and the Who still continues to find an audience.

The Fairness Doctrine will never be brought back. It's a right-wing boogeyman. Instead, we have the Money Doctrine, which dictates that wealthy media conglomerates are granted perpetual licenses to use the public airwaves. And what a surprise, most of what they produce is pseudo-macho "pro-business" talk radio propaganda that convinces the middle and lower classes to vote against their own interests, all the time whining about the liberal media.

  5. Re:Race Issue on Resident Evil 5 Dev Talks Demo Feedback · · Score: 1

I think that's a fairly trivial difference, as you can still be just as prejudiced against a "nationality" as you can a race, and race and nationality are pretty interchangeable terms in so many cases.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Have you been to Spain? They're as white as any other Europeans. Also, there are 3 races: negroid, caucisoid, and mongoloid. I guess you could say Mongolians are all mongoloid. Other than that, it's really not applicable.

I'm not for censorship and don't think this game is actually racist, but the angry gamer response I'm seeing to this matter makes me think we SHOULD censor the game, if only because my fellow gamers need to grow up.

It's a real shame that censoring games isn't up to you. Nor do you hold any sway over the meaning of the words "race" and "nationality." Listen-I'm just trying to educate you, friend. If I were in your shoes I'd want someone to tell me if I was misusing words. That way, I'd sound like less of an idiot.

  6. Re:Race Issue on Resident Evil 5 Dev Talks Demo Feedback · · Score: 1

So because no Spanish person complained about RE4, no black person can complain about RE5? It's been grandfathered in? Who knows why Spaniards didn't complain. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that racism against Spanish people has historically been nowhere near as bad as racism against black people, so they don't feel the need to complain?

Or maybe it's because "Spanish" is a designation of nationality, not race, Einstein.

The faded gold lettering on the door says "Philip Marlowe." My digs aren't in the greatest part of town, but that suits me just fine. I'm a blogger-one of the few honest ones out there. Work was a little slow-I was spending some time on important research-reading Slashdot. I was just about to hit the submit button on a post entitled "Frosty Piss!" when the dame shrugged her way through my door. If I'd have known what was going to happen next, I would have stuck to trolling.

She was tall for an Oriental, but not unappealing. She wore a black silk dress cut in traditional Chinese manner, studded with soft pink roses. Her eyes were black and silky as the dress. They didn't stay still. "Are you Marlowe?" she asked, scanning the room.

    "Sure," I replied diffidently.

"Your blogging reputation proceeds you. The Chinese government has a job for you."

"Nuts to that. I don't work for commies."

"I could make it worth your while, Mr. Marlowe."

"If I sold out to every fancy-pants who walked through that door, would I be working in this place?"

"I understand your position, Marlowe, but listen. There's a 24-year-old kid who got beaten to death while in police custody. The police say it was from playing hide-and-seek. We need an official investigation, and you're the best investigational blogger we know."

"Sure it wasn't from 'ring around the rosie'?" I smirked nastily. She took a sharp breath.

"Listen, Marlowe, don't you want to help improve the situation? I know you've had certain...shall we say...run-ins with hyperactive authority figures in the past. Surely this could help your reputation."

"MY reputation?" I practically yelled. "Lady, I've been called a troll, a spammer, and an astroturfer more times than you can count on your abacus. I've been modded down, banned, accused of violating TOSs, but I'm still here. So don't think you can tell me about my reputation. I'll do it for $100/day plus expenses."

"Very good, Mr. Marlowe," she purred.

"Oh, and one more thing," I stood up and got my hat. "I'd better be on the official Chinese government blogroll by sundown, or you're gonna have to find yourself a new patsy."

  14. Checklist of complications on Bands Bypass iTunes With iPhone Apps · · Score: 1

After reading the article, I gotta say I hope bands don't start doing this for the following reasons

1)Relies on access to the Internet. So...you can't access it when you're not connected? Running the radio in the iPod touch or iPhone drastically reduces battery life. No thanks.

2)Relies on 3rd party website outside iTunes. Relying on iTunes as the 'gatekeeper' to all your DRMed files is bad enough (thankfully, that's going away though). A separate entity is on even thinner ground...if their website changes or goes belly-up, it won't work.

3)Requires separate application. Can you imagine how clumsy it would get if every band operated like this? I guess someone would have to come up with another application to keep track every bands' varied releases-and who knows if the music, album art, video etc would be categorized in the same way.
