That's what everyone was saying about the iPad 2. You know, before we were told that specs don't matter.

    and because of multitasking

Someday iOS will multitask as well as windows 3.1 -- I don't know that anyone would consider what it does now "multitasking".

But without the GPU and memory bandwidth to back it up, it ends up being a DISadvantage. Nice going, Motorola! Stick to cellphones

The XOOM has it's share of problems -- but that fact does not make the iPad 2 any less of a disappointment. I know that Steve told us that the specs don't matter (with the iPad 2's specs so low, it's no surprise) and that the ever nebulous "experience" is what matters most -- but iOS is showing serious signs of age. The "experience" users get is of using an antiquated OS.

Android has a few warts, but they'll get ironed out in time as the OS matures. I doubt that Apple is going to offer any serious UI improvements in the next release of iOS -- leaving it's users even further behind the curve.

If you're interested in what a modern tablet OS looks like check out RIMs PlayBook. It'll be out in a few weeks and really puts other tablet offerings to shame in terms of UI and overall "experience". Apple had better take notice -- other tablet manufactures certainly will.

Why not? I certainly would. Tablets are still useless for anything other than dicking-around. They're toys -- not tools.

While there are uses for portable/handheld computers, other devices much better suited to specific tasks have long existed. 10 years ago I worked on a project that coupled a barcode scanner with an ipaq for warehouse use -- what that seems antiquated now, it's still better fit (lighter and tougher) than a 10" tablet. Telxon has a number of handheld products for remote data collection which a tablet computer would be a much worse fit.

If you can find a need (not a want) that is best filled by iPad-style tablets, then feel free to share. A good number of other slashdot users are legitimately interested.

Pre-printing envelopes with individual QR codes that you scan with your phone and then send to the central server to activate that QR code as postage would seem to be an easier solution for the consumer.

How is that an easier solution for the consumer? Rather than needing a common dumb-phone, the user would need a smartphone with a camera, QR code software, and the knowledge to put it all together.

It seems like your pre-printed QR code system would only benefit the automated machinery at the post-office.

Besides, if you were planning to go through all the trouble to pre-print codes on the envelopes, why not just add the cost of postage to the cost of the envelopes and skip the whole 'activation' bit?

Better yet, since we're printing things, why not print a whole bunch of codes on a large sheet instead of on individual envelopes? Just Image: If you perforate the sheet and add an adhesive backing, the customer need only tear off one of the "tokens" and stamp it to an inexpensive envelope.

To save some extra cash, instead of unique codes (and a monstrous computer system to keep track of them all), we could make all the "tokens" uniform. Like a picture -- We could even have more than one. For security, we could add some luminescent ink or micro-printing.

If your token pictures are interesting enough, I'll bet you'll have people buying whole sheets every time you issue a new image just to collect them. That's basically free money.

Yes, I think that's a much better idea.

First movers have the advantage you can shift target goals easier.

Apple was years late in the smartphone game. I guess that's why they haven't really been able to challenge early leaders like RIM.

Sure, devices like Apple's iPhone 4 are technically superior to the RIM's Torch -- but you can't judge these things on specs alone. In this post-PC world, it's the overall experience that ultimately wins out. That's what RIM gives you that Apple just doesn't "get". RIM makes phones that "just work".
