He acknowledges that someone may be working opn the type of ground-breaking innovation he came up with in the late 70's to revolutionize the industry
Does anyone know what that was? I dont seem to recall anything of the sort happening. Lets see... he bought DOS from someone else, had the personal computer market handed to him on a platter through his mother sitting on a bank board with the then-chairman of IBM, and has since then been one of the biggest thieves of intellectual property in the industry.

Ah, yes. MS taking credit for the internet.

I would love to see them try this, but would hate to try to use it! Anyone else seen the chillingly horrible talking parrot for outlook? And you thought the winking paper clip was abominable.
The chairman of Priceline, Jay Walker, thinks that 'people who think up ideas should own them'. Priceline.com came about as a venture of Walker Digital, who's main focus is to think of business methods and patent them before anyone else does. While I think that someone who is inventive or innovative in the field of business model forming should be rewarded with success dependent upon the merits of their idea, I don't think the government should be granting them exclusive license to operate in such a manner.
Some of these patents are going to cause major problems unless they are struck down. It seems pretty apparent to me that many of them are WAY too broad - especially this Amazon one. I don't see how they could protect a patent like this (i hope...), nor do I see why such patents are even allowable.
currently, MS has the upper hand over Intel - when MS says 'you have to do this and this becasue we want to blah blah on our next version' intel has to listen. Do they like this? I doubt it.
On the other hand, if they can control which features the OS has, and how it takes advantage of any new features of their chips, they will have a lot more room to change things.
would be nice. I on occasion have used quake servers a place to go run around and chat with some friends rather than just an actual killing ocmpetition. I think this technology has uses for virtual worlds that go far beyond gaming.
They do have a lot of good points, but what i meant to say is that some of the things they attack are actually not disturbing at all. For instance, they complain that IE4 notifies you each time a download is complete. they say that microsoft 'didnt realize trhis was a problem when it was realeased' and you have to 'download a15mb fix that includes a way to turn that off'.
Um, actually i think the notification is useful. I wish netscape did that. While they should have originally included a option to disable that, it isnt a big deal, or an oversight by them really.
Its going to work sometime ! the layout engine works pretty damn well now, and is a lot better than Netscape 4.x by far. Just becasue they aren't done yet is no reason to discredit their effort.
well, I store in my mind a memory of turnips that is none to happy...one time, dinner time in my distant past, my mother told me that a bowl of mashed turnips were mashed potatoes, and upon tasting the alleged potatoes i experienced quite a shock to my tongue. If i had been expecting the taste of a turnip, things would be different for me today, and possibly all of society.
I tried the M10 release for Win98 (ick), and the new layout engine is indeed a lot faster. On Netscape 4.x there is a noticeable lag while the program renders the page after loading a large comment-full slashdot page, but the new one is a LOT faster. Crashes over and over and over and over, though.
The two ways to run it are to execute apprunner or viewer. Viewer is barebones, back, forward and address only, whereas Apprunner launches the new communicator, which is pink (......) and has a lot of... stuff.
Personally, i like the stripped down viewer a lot better! If it only had bookmarks, and a way to open links in a new window, I would make viewer my only browser... screw the new communicator! I dont need all the other stuff that comes with it. just the browser, ma'am.
i was going to post my own "um, hemos? what the hell?" comment , but this one is pretty funny.
What is the level of interoperability?

KDE Looks Ahead

Between gnome and kde, i mean. I think this should be a primary focus for the two projects. While it is good to have multiple competing systems for the sake of diversity and innovation, compatibility would simplify matters for programmers and users.
According to kde.org's news, redhat 6.1 includes both windowing systems and as they put it, equal opportunity installation choice for KDE and Gnome. As a new user of Linux, or more precisely, someone who is about to become a new user, I was wondering whether i should install the same desktop on each of my systems for experimental purposes, or would it be more difficult to share applications and files?
The site is interesting and humorous in some parts, but many of their criticisms are petty. They have some good points, but like suck.com, thier continuous cynical and hyper-critical attitude wears a bit thin.
and i didn't have christianity foisted upon me. I had never heard anything about teaching creationism at all, in fact. Good though! I would have been highly irritated. I commend the board on their 14-1 decision, and wonder what that one guy was thinking.
That was my thought upon reading this. I believe quantum computing technology will achieve significant advances soon enough that the limitations of silicon will become irrelevant.
yes, theyre almost done with BEOS apparently, and are waiting for red hat and someone to do something before anything else happens with the unix version. The Amiga version seems to be doomes, but um... er, well i have a browser anyway.
Hey, this is nice - you can use a laptop with Linux during your stay. Also available are reading materials concerning free software in addition to glossy magazines! Also they have " bath or whirlpool, either with view of the park or the old garden. Mini-bar, large color TV, fax machine, modem plug, Treca beds,... and much more." In addition to stuffed penguins!! I had a lovely stuffed penguin as a child. In fact, i still have her! Mine was a good deal slimmer though.

Just had to respond to some of that.

To pass the test, the program would have to converse fluently in a manner indistinguishable from a human... not quite where we're at in AI.

sorry, i got a bit carried away there.
i'm going to go to their site and bug them about making a linux version. I'd even give them money.

most of the times when NT crashes it's because of bad sectors on the disk and other shoddy hw manufacturing.
um...i thought it was the convoluted crappy code and backwards compatibility to 1985.
More stable, more features, better all around
