Many portable phones continuously transmit a signal at any time they are on, maintaining their connection to the station. In the incident you refer to, it is quite possible that the British man could have been interefering with plane communications by simply having his phone switched on. I would say , a year in prison seems a bit harsh though.
Here is an another article about the difference between CISC and RISC and how much of what we call RISC isn't RISC in the traditional sense. This is the linky thing. The article talks about a vast amount of other processor related topics, and incldes the whole RISCSy CISCy thing.
hey, I think Unreal Tournament is going to be out for the mac, as some AC above has noted. It is, in my opinion, a lot more fun than q3 anyhow. I wanted to point out that they are also making a linux version, which should be dandy.
One facet of the representation of computers in movies and TV that has always irritated me is that they have to boop and beep everytime they do anything, such as print a text to the screen, or zoom in on a map.
I have yet to see one movie where the onscreen computer doesnt go wheedle wheedle beep constantly .
If mine did that I would destroy it! Or, um, maybe turn it off.
The industry is only losing money from software piracy if the people using 'borrowed' copies would have actually paid for them, which is unlikely for almost all of these users.
By 'piracy' , i mean people copying and installing software for their friends...copying it and selling it is entirely different. Anyone who is interested in a well thought out, logical viewpoint on this should go and read the GNU outlook.
I installed redhat 6.1 and it was massively easy. Though the kde workstation install was screwed, I tried again and chose gnome-only and it was splendid. Give it a try. Just remember to type 'startx'
In any case, I think people are missing the biggest offender here -- ComputerWorld, which took a report criticizing Linux as a business desktop and turned that into "A damning report from Gartner has all but put the kiss of death on Linux."
Y Online casinos are a bad idea anyway - I believe that gambling is pretty lame and this proliferation of casinos on native american reservations is bad enough. Allowing people to gamble through their home is even worse. I can't believe this lady was allowed to do this, adn the jusge is, as you say, incompetent , and in my opinion, should be smacked for being so retarded.
She sure wouldn't be complaing about Visa 'loaning' her money if she won!
Bill Gates book, or at least one of the latest ones, has a whole section of analogies comparing computers to cars. Clearly he hasn't considered what kind of Fatal Exception a fatal exception on the freeway would be! I dont think I would want a car that has to be restarted suddenly all the time (hmm..maybe he was thinking of my old Crown Vic when he said that...it was sort of like Windows)
Thats right, the same book, I think, where he said 'The most obvious mathematical breakthrough would be the development of away to factor large prime numbers'. Factor...prime numbers. But thats off topic.
When will the world realize software is probably the same way?
You have a good point - one big reason the pc architecture won out is because various companies starting producing systems. Apple started way too late, and Amigas were only made by other companies after Commodore was dead. Wasn't IBM forced to allow clones by their antitrust case, or something? I don't recall, exactly.
Anyhow, propietary software companies could learn a lot by looking at the hardware story.
go to the.us place. Anyone can get one, you just have to adhere to their naming convention, which I think is lame because i dont want to be named according to a geographical location (it doesnt have to be your geographical location, strangely).
I don't know much about this, but i have seen info when i was researching XML.
Here are some icky MS links: Microsoft's XML page has some stuff about this soap thing, and they actually say that they want people to use XML as a standard format for data (not a Office2000 format of some sort instead??)
okay , you irritated me enough that I have one more response...
I dont think IE5 OR netscape is the best browser around. I prefer Opera, thanks very much, and am fooling nobody by holding this belief, myself included.
also, i must mention... my brother reinstalled windows at the same time as I installed redhat, and he had crashed 3 times , having to turn his comp. off and on, before I had even rebooted to see what it was like in linux. My sound worked instantly. He had to screw with IRQs. My network card worked instantly. He had to configure it and reboot 3 times. etc. etc. I am very impressed with linux/gnome on my first few days! so die.
They've been looking into him for 2 years, at least, the article says. What a skimpappy. I had hoped Corel Linux would be interesting. It is a shame people like him have to reflect on the rest of the company, for I like Corel Draw and some of their other software.
How reliable are these larger drives?
on
IBMs 73Gig Drive
·
· Score: 1
I pay a lot more for a smaller , super-reliable than I would for a huge drive that clacks and sputters in a couple of years. I am deciding what kind of auxillary hard drive to get and I am not so sure about this 20GB drive i found for $220... but um, i guess that looks pretty small next to this one.
Mainly because he operate his business with cuthroat, vicious tactics and has no compunctions about lying, slandering and misleading. Or at least his organization doesnt. Not to mention that MS's software has been directly responsible for wasting millions of hours in what otherwise could have been useful time - Windows DOES NOT WORK RIGHT and neither do scores of thier applications. Have you noticed this? I sure did. I installed linux 2 days ago after my Win98 system developed a habit of suddenly rebooting everytime I opened my CD drive. If I owned 20% of a company like that, I would be ashamed of myself for not fixing IT!!! THEY SUCK!!!
thats why.
I wanted to add, I am free to use any catsup I please - if 90% of all french fries were incompatible with any condiment other than Heinz Brand, i would be pissed. Or maybe just use green chile sauce.

I don't think we frown on their donations, just them.

Yes. Kiss of death?
- What utter crap.

I really like the idea of blue cow spots.
ah yes, I recall hearing that. Well, good for them to use an open file format - as long as they dont 'embrace and extend'.

linux zealot? i just installed linux for the first time 2 days ago.
He is a great author, and I am pleased to see him granted this oppurtunity. That would have been great, Drizzt movies!
I have thoroughly enjoyed many of his books without requiring the assistance of marijuana, though it couldnt hurt. I think Salvatore is a fine author.

MS would not make most of these statements, my dog could come up with a better list.
My dog could come up with a better OS!
