You'd be surprised how often dispatch calls in for a unit to report to a certain place where aid is needed, and all units in the general area turn on their lights and start to go. Another cop then gets on the radio and says that he is closest, or dispatch calls back and says "never mind," etc... Everyone then turns off their lights, and goes back about their business. Obviously officers will abuse their power, but most don't. I know enough of them to know that's true. My friend says that he hates it when "The call" comes out and he starts driving with his lights and siren on then the "its taken care of" call comes. He usually turns down a side street so people don't think he was just being an ass to get around traffic.
Its not always "because they can" or an "ego trip". My best friend is a State Police officer and in training they are told and taught that in certain situations you are supposed to speed. Now, in this instance of going through a neighborhood it does not apply. However, on regular and state highways (roads with more than one lane), police officers speed in order to catch speeders. You trail 200-500 feet behind them to clock their speed, then accelerate in for the kill. Believe it or not, this is considered safer than having an Officer attempt to clock someone from the side of the road then pull onto the highway from being stopped into traffic going 70mph. This is why you see police officer's speeding on multi-lane roads all the time. This isn't give an excuse for speeding in a neighborhood... I'm just saying that its not just because they can speed and get away with it, its part of the training.
People losing weight from playing a video is great and all, though it does shed light on how out of shape some people are. However, I've thought about the Wii and how its use could be great for people in physical therapy.
A while back a friend of mine broke his arm, and was in physical therapy for 8 weeks. During this time he had to do a lot of exercises with his arm and would always complain about how boring and annoying it was, sitting in a room with a bunch of other hurt people, doing exercises for an hour three times a week. Well, it turns out that the motion of bowling on the Wii is almost just like an exercise he had to do. It would be interesting to what would happen if physical therapists got someone to make a fun game for the Wii, that makes you do the exercises that you are supposed to do anyway.
I am not a Mac user yet, though I am going to make the switch when I get a new laptop. The commercials are not the reason for me switching, I think they are stupid. Having extensive knowledge of the Windows operating systems, I know that a lot of the things that are said on the "I'm a Mac..." commercials is just plain wrong. For exmaple: how can it be claimed that Macs are for fun and PCs are for business when Mac have six [youtube.com] games? They have more than one commercial that make fun of PCs for being for business only, and these are the one that bother me most.
They also have those two commercials about photo albums and home vidoes. On the Mac it looks great, but on the PC is looks like a hack job. To me, this isn't saying it is easier on the Mac, its saying that, "everyone looks better when done on a Mac. Ha Ha PC! Go back and run Word at someone's office like you are supposed to".
If your product is superior, tell us about its strengths, not about the competitions "supposed" weaknesses. Apparently Apple thinks PC users have no artistic talent or games to play.
Honest question here, I thought the speed of light was absolute. So why then does this cable allow allow the light to travel at 90% of the speed of light? What is causing this slow down?
I know a lot of people don't like change. Especially 'dumb' office users who just sit and use Word and Excel all day. But as an avid user of Office 2007 beta, I have to say that after getting used to the ribbon, it is quite handy, and I find it to be faster than the menu system. As for it being too big and taking up too much of the screen... I think that's a bit of crap right there. If you have the default Word layout, add one toolbar (let's say Adobe put its annoying toolbar in there for you), and that toolbar is below the default bars, then the ribbon is about the same size. Also, with the standard resolution being 1024 by 767 and most 17 inch LCDs being able to display at 1280 by 1024 I don't see why space is of so much importance that they layout has to be Altered again.
Things change, learn to use the new "tool" (read: ribbon) and move along. Its really not that big
Yeah... I was trying to make a lot of money and put a shot at Microsoft. IE6 was never a crital update either. But it was marked as such.
Back in the days of IE5 there was no such thing as spyware, and the whole "visit a website, get a trogan" sites were few and far between. Yet IE6 was pushed like IE7 will be.
Yes, I knew it would be critial, I was just giving 2 to 1 because I need the money...
Yeah... I actually thought they might do something like this... and in true M$ style they will mark it as a "critical update" because of all of the flaws in IE.
Okay... on a more serious note, I actually (don't flame me) like Windows XP. It is incredibly stable on my PC. But it is Microsoft style to push their products onto users my force. So my bets are on MS putting this out as a critical security updates.
Given how much money it would cost to go after the RIAA I'm not too surprised that no one has filed a countersuit yet. However, so far every story I've heard about the RIAA sueing someone has been that the person was either a child/teenager or a family that doesn't much cash. It would be interesting to get demographic information about who the RIAA has gone after so far.
I've had some problems with the new WGA that has gone out, and I find that it is only hurting and hindering legitimate users. People I know who are running Corporate or otherwise cracked editions are patiently waiting for a new crack for WGA, but legitimate end users are worried / concerned when the little alert pops up saying that their copy of Windows might not be legit. It has been my experience that if you are using a cracked / Volume / Corporate version of Windows, you know it, you ignore the messages, you wait for a crack. The legit users who see this message get scared. Therefore, I don't see WGA solving any of the problems MS intended it to.
That does make sense, but if this is designed for the server market, how is it supposed to combat Intel's Core 2 Duo which is a desktop chip? They mention the Core 2 Duo but not the new Xeon 5100 series. The article gave me the impression of the 4x4 competing with the Core 2 Duo, not the Xeon 5100, which implies this is intended for the desktop market.
I'm not entirely sure that throwing more cores at the problem is neccessarily a great solution for combatting Intel's Core 2 Duo chips. Wouldn't this make AMD systems cost more money (2 FX chips on one motherboard) than an Intel gaming box would?
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge AMD fan but I'm not conviced that, "let's just put more cores into the box" is a great response to Intel's Core 2 Duo. The announcement of a new core from AMD would have been more exciting. I guess I'll have to wait for that.
Me: Its over? Son of a bitch!
Roommate: Son of a bitch!
Mexican: Madre de dio!
