I still don't get it. You suspect that there are people who do back stage lighting and that these people take their job too seriously, not realising that it doesn't matter that much.
This idea started from where you misunderstood an acronym, and what you think might happen, but otherwise you have no evidence of your assertion?
So God also either created himself, or was brought into being by something else? What about the option that the universe 'just existed', and wasn't created at all.
What do you mean by a dead founder? Presumably Allah founded Islam, and Muhammed was just an instrument. In Buddhism they say that Buddha has transcended and is still alive.
I'm not sure what you mean by "exalts himself to the position of God". Are you saying that athiests believe they have God-like powers? Because there's a woman I'd really like to turn into a pillar of salt.. If you feel that an ordinary man can be a God, then I think we have different definitions of God.
Most faiths, excluding the various Pagan ones, tend to have a God that reaches out. The Qu'ran, to use it as an example again, has much about Allah helping the sick/poor. It's hardly surprising given that the 3 Judeo religions are all based on much of the same scripture.
The bible can't even get it correct about whether the sun is a ball or a circle. How can you possibly interpret something as complicated as a dimension?
The Qu'ran says that Allah is "all-embracing". Allah, according to the Qu'ran, also says that you should trust and believe him. God, according to the bible, says the same thing. There are many other religions that do the same thing.
You have simply picked the one religion that your parents and/or people around you believe.
I have a PhD in physics - I'm fully aware of spacetime:P If I say that the universe could be cyclic, I am saying that it could be cyclic and still fit all the observational data that we have. There is no belief there at all. It's also not true that there is no way we can learn about what happened before the creation event. People are developing various ideas, such as the M-brane idea, which talks about this idea of a cyclic event. With a high enough energy we should, if the ideas are along the right lines, be able to probe the membrane that we are on.
> I believe He did because I believe God is truthful and has communicated truth to mankind in written form.
Ah, but you also have to believe that he communicated via the exact authors that the bible includes. There are lots of books that weren't included in the bible. Maybe God's word is in those instead? Maybe God's word is in the Hebrew books?
The universe could be cyclic - i.e. continual big bang and big crunch. Or since time began at the big bang, it's also okay to say the universe has just 'always existed' and yet have a beginning. Fun fun.
> In the original Hebrew it is the same word that was used for sphere. Not at all. There is "duwr". People knew the difference between a circle and a ball.
So God didn't require a creator, but just existed? Why couldn't the same happen with the universe then? Why does the universe require a creator, but God doesn't?
There are lots of erroneous things in the bible. The obvious ones being that the moon is a light like the sun, and that the moon and the sun are circles (they aren't - they are spheres).
There are also lots of things that came true in the Qu'ran. In fact I'd say there was more correct there than in the bible (search for Qu'ran on torrentspy for a documentary on it). The Qu'ran has much more convincing predictions.
The re-birth of a nation is just silly. Please name a nation that _hasn't_ had a re-birth.
> I get the impression that posters on slashdot are so clueless about other fields that they think software is special in this regard.
Surely the more obvious conclusion would be that posters on slashdot are so clueless about other fields that they refrain from judging about patents either way.
For what it's worth, most hardware patents that I've had to come across are pretty stupid too. My company makes hologram printers and we have various patents for stuff like "if you overlap the pixels, you can get what appears to be a higher resolution" and stupidly obvious things like that.
What does "all information only originates in a mind" mean? Are you simply defining information to mean something that a mind makes up?
The christian religion also assumes that the bible is correct and was written (with varying degrees of directness depending on the denomination) by God. This kinda of assumption is nothing at all like any kind of scientific assumption. Like you say, in science you test the assumptions with tests. You can do nothing like that with religious assumptions.
Not at all. A scientist strives for as few assumptions as possible. General relativity, for example, comes down to a tiny number of assumptions.
You always have to have some assumptions (e.g. assume that this isn't a computer simulation that we live in, assume the laws of physics haven't changed since yesterday, and so on). But science is about knowing the limits of a theory, and minimising those assumptions.
Religion on the other hand starts with assumptions, and finishes there, insisting that the assumptions are true.
Exactly. Despite your dumb sarcasm, you're right. We see people working very hard to get the math working and get predictions. We also see the large hadron collider being built, which should be done this year. This will clear up quite a few things hopefully.
It seems that mostly you are just whining because, omg, they haven't solved it yet. I mean, really, you are complaining that it's been 15 to 20 years. The LHC _alone_ has taken 16 years to build, and it will take several more years to get the first results.
Just assume for a moment that string theory is correct. Would it really be that surprising to you if it takes more than 20 years to work it out?
A huge amount of new math has been discovered/created. Even if string theory is wrong, it wouldn't have been a waste of time at all.
So that's why you have layers. There's no reason you couldn't build a bug tracking system etc on top of svn. In fact, that's what kde does. And look at launchpad and Trac.
The reason you do see it in the news is because the world is a big place, and because such events get newspaper attention. There are 6 billion people on this planet. It's perfectly okay for me to state it's very rare, even if there's a newspaper report on such an event every week.
It's a case of statistics though. If you take a couple at random that are arguing over a baby, how likely is it that the fake mother will be okay with the baby being killed?
I hated that Solomon story so much. Consider the fake mother. Is it really likely that she would fight so hard to have a baby, to the point where the case gets dragged before the King, with such desperation for a baby to have and to love, that she'd be willing for the baby to die?
And when was the last time you heard of a woman allowing a baby to die, even if it's not hers? Just that alone is just so very unlikely.
> You actually think MS should just not develop products because there are a bunch of various different open source tools people could use instead? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Sure why not? You said yourself that their business model is solutions not products. So why not have TFS use subversion if subversion has the features they need? They could still build the rest of the features on top. It's a political reason not to, not a technical one.
And yes you do hear people complain about ClearCase. I've never used the others though.
Actually from what I remember there are some (respectable) hypthosis's that man's built in fear of dragons are from large flying dinosaurs - i.e. birds. (A bird is, after all, descended ). It is plausible that some of the larger flying dinosaurs did survive the mass extinction, as well as the small birds. If these larger birds survived until man arrived, then it's quite possible that man would gain a built-in genetic fear of flying birds. Which is where dragons come from.
> His political and philosophical goals were (and are) more important than anything else.
Good on him. But given that they, presumably, are paying for the AMD chips, it would seem that AMD are cooperating with them and not just giving them handouts.
> Why not focus on One Meal Per Child, Debt Forgiveness for the Third World, Free Medicine for the Third World, the Robert Mugabe Silver Bullet to the Dictator's Head assistance.
My wife's PhD is on this very subject, and it is nowhere near as simple as you might think. There are very few cases were debt forgiveness has actually helped anything. Shipping food over is more of a short term solution. Medicine is often a problem with distribution and education rather than the cost of the medicines up front. (There are famous exceptions of course). As for shooting Robert Mugabe - he has a strong following in a large amount of Africa.
I'd love to actually see the logs for your conversation.
I've been on irc for a long time, and never seen this happen, except under a few circumstances. These circumstances are when people start swearing and just say "fucking linux doesnt work. tell me how to fix it". And then they wonder why they get a bad reply.
I still don't get it. You suspect that there are people who do back stage lighting and that these people take their job too seriously, not realising that it doesn't matter that much.
This idea started from where you misunderstood an acronym, and what you think might happen, but otherwise you have no evidence of your assertion?
I read what you wrote 3 times, and I still can't follow it.
In what way is BSL "an example of how extreme specialization within a field can eventually lead to its paralysis" ?
You seem to have missed the whole middle part of your story.
Give up smoking :-)
I broke my laptop by pouring salty miso soup in it. I think it rusted the motherboard inside.

Well if you want to just change the terms, why doesn't Intel do a "commercial transaction" with OLPC to make one decent laptop.
