    FTFY. When I was growing up, the mantra was, "Don't trust anyone over thirty." I was nowhere near thirty, yet still I thought that was one of the stupidest things I'd ever heard. Charles Manson was ca. 34 when Sharon Tate was murdered. Alexander the Great was ca. 33 when he died. Physical age has nothing to do with pretty near everything.

    Maturity is highly overrated.

    You must mean that in a way that I don't recognize. Marie Curie was ca. 67 when she died.

    You mean like the Mafia or the Zetas? I think, based on past actions, anyone can assume they exist. What that means is up to interpretation. However, you don't need a corporate head office to be considered an organization. The prosecutor needs only to convince a jury of conspiracy, or obstruction, these days.

    On topic, I really wonder why they can't just follow him to the Starbucks he goes to every morning and arrest him there (I would guess they've been collating his daily routine for weeks before this happened). Wouldn't that be a lot simpler, cheaper, and safer for everyone? The computers would be safe back in his apartment, nobody gets shot, he's in the pokey, and no headlines are made.

    Why expensive and potentially catastrophic paramilitary intervention for a mouthy geek?

    Do you actually use DVDs for backups?

    I can fit my $HOME on a CD actually. I use afio (cpio clone) with bzip. I've not noticed media degradation in the more than a decade I've been doing it this way, but then I've no kids splattering catsup everywhere. I also play around a lot with LiveCDs.

    I won't be going to a tablet anytime soon. They appear to be entertaining trinkets from what I can tell, but that's all.

    A laptop is a middling compromize. This sticking touch pad is a pain in the ass.

    Which is why I always use external mice.

    This screen is too fucking small for work. And this processessor is too big or small for what this peice of shit is going to be used for.

    I hate that laptop screens seem to just get bigger and bigger, so I have to throw away perfectly good laptop bags.

    Gimme a desktop for crunching numbers, coding, or anything else that requires hours on end in front of a fucking box.

    AKA, gaming.

    It's the fucking laptop that's a middling compromise for sit. And my fucking thumbs keeps hitting the goddman pad so I have to keep my hands at this god aweful angle to type without having the the damnn cursor go off into lala land.

    My HP dv4 has a physical switch right beside the trackpad that I can use to turn it off. The software I use lets me turn it off on my other machines.

    Laptops come with built-in UPS, ports (!!!), DVD burner (physical backups), and you might even be able to fix it if it ever breaks.

    i) First chance, treat them nice.
    ii) If they treat you shitilly back, treat them shitilly back.
    iii) In theory, they get sick of being treated shitilly at which point they treat you nice, at which point you treat them nice.

    That Russian dog figured this out (Cf. Pavlov). Humans ought to be able to too. Yeah, that's kind of tangential, but it sounds nice.

    But really, "I'll treat you like !@#$ until you stop treating me like !@#$" makes more sense than anything I've ever seen.

    On the other hand, it's only effective/useful in normal situations with non-psychopaths. Drat.

    I don't have a great deal of respect for this cert system you guys use, but since you do, you ought to all be using it in the best way it can be used to protect both yourselves and the users who're relying on your securing of your systems.

    You're damned right I care whether my online banking is secure, and if my bank's doing it wrong, you're damned right I'm going to be looking to transfer to one that does it right.

    Secure, or convenient? Hmm. "What's the potential downside of convenient?" !@#$, I hate watching you people cheap out on the basics!

    Honest to $DEITY, I'm not an Apple fanboi, but Apple saw the writing on the wall and made the jump from OS9 to OSX. Why hasn't Microsoft even attempted anything that forward thinking? How long will we have to put up with Microsoft's blinkered thinking as it relates to the basics of system security? Why isn't Microsoft malware obsolete yet? Why are we still suffering from the deluges of spam and malware from MS related botnets & etc?

    A ton of money is made by the PC "security" industry surrounding Windows.

    Why would Microsoft support an industry that they don't make money from that actually makes their product look bad?

    I've been wondering that ever since I first heard of Windows malware. I have to assume either they think it makes them look good ("Oh look, my virus checker stopped an infection, yay!"), or they have no idea how to eliminate the problem (painted themselves into a corner) now that billions of copies of Windows are in the wild.

    With the state of computer security being utterly insecure at nearly every juncture, and our unwillingness to fix the legal risk of us meeting the demand for affordable distributed computing, I think it's only natural that such is done illegally.

    Hyperbole much? Sue the pants off Microsoft for selling easily p0wned software, or sue the average computer user for not being knowledgable enough to use it.

    Should they require an Internet driver's licence? No thanks, very much.

    I run (so far) secure FLOSS boxes. Don't blame me for the state of computer security. I don't need any more laws to protect me, as if they could. The vast majority of what's wrong with computer security as it relates to botnets can firmly be placed at Bill Gates and Steve Balmer's door for continuing not to fix it, despite all our protestations on the subject for decades now.

    I do distributed computing. I've not been boned. Fancy that.

    I think the answer should be the same as in "Shall illegal arms dealer get charged with being accessory to murder/robbery/etc?" and I think legally it's a no.

    I think, legally it should not be no. A getaway driver's just driving a car. He's not robbing the bank.

    If he sold the weapon legally, he should be in the clear. There's no way he could have known what was going to be done with it. Illegaly, complicit.

    There is nothing wrong with the (?) Linux Desktop. Use it, or don't; I don't fscking care. That I can use it is all that matters (to me). I'd be happy to tutor you if you wish, but that's as far as I'll go. I don't much care what you want. That's primarily your problem (which I would be happy to help you with, but I'm only volunteering ...).

    I really hate that so many people fixate on this so much. It's a non-issue. If you don't want it, stay with what you're presently using (gasp!). It's no skin off my nose (gasp; not really).

    The US' definition of fair use is irrelevant as long as the US' courts choose to ignore it, which they do. There's a lot of things that we grew up believing that we thought the US stood for which are no longer the case. This's just one in a long line of them.

    The US today needs a Mickey Spillane/Mike Hammer to seriously kick some ass. It's in the business of making itself look foolish these days. Very sad.

    Want to use something copyrighted? Pay the rights holder what is due for the amount of the copyrighted content to be used.

    media outlets could certainly make an argument that such automated "take downs" constitute an unfair burden and so are invalid.

    And the legal theory on this could develop from Lenz v. Universal: a copyright owner's representative must consider fair use and other defenses in good faith before filing a notice of claimed infringement under OCILLA.

    I don't recognize "OCILLA" (sorry, I'm Canuckian), but I do have to point out this's the 21st Century. "Shoot first, ask questions later" is SOP. This century, everything works like accountants and bankers work. Allow anything, no matter how brain dead or stupid, then roll it back when/if the error's discovered later.

    Just a "heads up." I don't make the rules. I tend not to even bother following them, and YMMV.

    Pretty much bullshit, "fair use" is indeed well defined.

    I'll call BS on you for that. "I'd like to live in theory. Everything works in theory." There's a revolving door between The MafiAA and the US gov't, meaning MafiAA lobbyists are getting placed into position as judges on these cases. One court goes one way, another court goes the opposite, the Supremes decline to sort out the difference, lawyers get rich, people get destroyed financially, Hollywood gets to "Lalalalala..." (fingers in ears) interminably, and we just sit back and let this !@#$ go on and on and on ...

    Why? This show's getting really old. Moldy even.
