On my linux box my nvidia tnt2 works perfectly an the 2d performance are stellar, so what to say about your statement of instability? That you speak withouth cognition! Before making such absolute claims make sure of what you say. Regards, Antonio P.S.: I beg your pardon for my english, I don't live in a anglophone country, so I don't make much practice.

  2. HDCD, SACD, what else now? on Sony Super CD: More Bits, More Bucks, Mo' Betta? · · Score: 1

It semms that the run to audio coding bits is just started.
The original CDs are coded on 16 bits so they don't reproduce sound armonics placed to our ear limits.
The HDCD standard (that exists right now from almost 2 years and is widely implemented - my avino system reads HDCD and CD) is coded on 20 bit capturing armonics that most of us will never appreciate (the human ear conventionally catches signals extending from 20Hz to almost 20 kHz).
Now we have SACD coded on 24 bits reproducing armonics beyond our earing band.
    Is it necessary?
I wonder when someone other will produce 32 bits audio CDs claiming it as a new standard.

  3. Because the functional languages aren't so popular on What About Functional Languages? · · Score: 1

Every functional language makes an extensive use of recursion.
Think to Lisp or Prolog...both rely on recursion.
In particular the Prolog interpreter implementation make use of recursion.
And the recursion is the worst enemy of efficiency in the actual computer architectures.
That's why you see Prolog and lisp used only in really particular application and instead you see languages as c++ used everywhere.

I just mean: they sue me, and so?
I can afford a good legal staff and even if I cannot, exist associations that can.
May be the time to teach to these thiefs that they cannot put their hands over everything, that they cannot rely over the costs of a legal staff.
And after we win their lawsuit we can sue them.

Standards... well then tell me the standard way to install a package that works accross all Linux distributions?

Simply by using the couple "install shell script/tar ball".
That works with every linux (and unix) distribution and it's the way the companies choose to install their closed source software (they often optionally add the rpm packages for the rpm fans).

All these symbology was necessary to notice the church inside the cathacombs during the roman persecutions.
Of course the simbology survive until now so that you can see X letter as fish represented inside some church walls.

Man, I run Solaris along with linux and I can assure to you that the linux x-server with my ATI rage-pro video card is really faster than solaris.
The linux systems appears to be really more performant than solaris on x86 and last but not least the solaris version doesn't recognize my expensive U2W scsi controller (the version I received, other versions I don't know) so it resides on a humble EIDE disk.
I also use commercial applications that are avaible just for linux as x86-unix.
Of course they are avaible for aix, solaris or digital, but just for their own processors, not for the x86 version, neither for SCO.
I just like to run a day solaris/sparc binaries on linux, but this isn't a perfect world, right?

  10. The reason why this spec is necessary on Corba language neutrality gone? · · Score: 1

    I agree.
By the way this flame has been generated by an error inside the broad lines of the objectwatch article.
In fact they substain that the OMG choice imply a revolution about CORBA, the choice of Java as the only CORBA language.
Of course such gigantic error has been generated by their Microsof experience.
In their experience, I presume, there isn't any difference about source compatibility and binary compatibility.
Such ipothesis is reasonable if we think that the DCOM model is limited just to the x86 windows platform.
So they assumed that using Java for binary compatibility forces the CORBA users to use only Java and this assumption is so wrong that started our fury.

By the way java is really inefficient at the actual status.
I think that could be a lot better if they use only object oriented languages instead that all languages (e.g. C++, Fortran 90, Ada 95 and so on)
And if they must choose just one object oriented language they could choose C++ that is far better than java about speed and diffusion among developers.
