  1. Re:So? on Microsoft Tech Specs Prohibit GPL Implementations · · Score: 1

wait I didn't see anything about "use" of SAMBA...
But it does seem like they hace definitely made development of SAMBA illegal... though I do wonder about the legitamacy of the patents... (a quick glance at the patents seem like they where things in use prior to the patent...) Anyways, basically SAMBA development needs to move to a country that doesn't recognize US patent laws ;)

  2. burden is not on us... on Defamation, Free Speech, Jurisdiction and the Net? · · Score: 1

In the Yahoo vs. France case, US courts have held that france has no jurisdiction to censor US run sites.

So, if the governments of the world want to censor the contents of the web, then...
    1) they can prevent servers from their country from posting those material, and
    2) they can take the time and money to filter materials that they deem inapproprate.

I certainly am not gonna give 2 shits about what France, Iraq or anyother country says I can put up. I barely care what US tells me I can put up...

  3. another stupid idea on Would You Pay A Penny Per Page? · · Score: 1

Simply put, won't work. It is just another stupid idea in a long line of "let's make money using the web" ideas.

    1) http protocol was not designed with business in mind. It was designed as standard for simple exchange of information. The infrastructure was not designed for this.

the system that they are proposing has so much potential for abuse that it's not even funny. From both sides. A site can popup 100s of simple popup window everytime you come to a page. if they get paid a penny for each what is gonna stop them from doing this? they already popup 10 adds each time you get to one them. each window opening another 5 when you close one. There is nothing in the infrastructure to prevent this.

Not to mention all the privacy issues involved here! Tracking all my sites? I don't think so.

The web was designed to be free keep it that way.

  4. autodetonate switch for planes. on Philip Zimmermann and 'Guilt' Over PGP · · Score: 1

Arguing that all crypto should have a back door for the government, because the terrorists used crypto to secure their message, is just plain ridiculous.

If that arguement has any merrit. You might as well argue that all planes should be remote detonatable by the government incase it gets hijacked. Hey, planes were used in the attack, lets not forget that. This is ridiculous and so is the notion to add aback door to encryption.

  5. my $.02 on What's A Good Starter Linux distro? · · Score: 1

I've tried most of the major distros in the last 2 years. I started out with Red Hat and quickly moved to Mandrake. Used that for a year or so and then tried Suse 'cause Mandrake didn't install on my laptop. Recently my favorite distro is Slackware. The distros have all come a long way in the past 2 years. One of the difficulties when I first started was the X setup, but all four seems to have made that very easy, especially with X 4.x. Anyway, here are my opinion as a fairly recent linux convert. Red Hat is good easy distro. The RPMs make installs of software fairly easy. But if you want to test the bleeding edge, not very suited for that. It has a pretty good set of GUI tools. But if GUI tools are what you're looking for (usually good for windows converts) than Mandrake might be the one for you. Mandrake is a Red Hat derivative. It has a better GUI toolset and in my opinion. A generally better looking all around. Probably the distro most suited for migration from a windows system. Has the same drawbacks as Red Hat, but a good one to learn under. SuSe. Now days rivals Mandrake in the GUI tools and ease of install. It is a slightly different flavor of linux. Has a centralized tool that controls a lot of the system features. Has one centralized RC file that holds the major configs for the system. This is a double-edged nice if this is your first distro and that is what you get used to, but can wreak havoc if you're used to dealing with all the different rc files and try to mess with those... In my opinion, not one to try if you plan on switching distros in the future. Slackware. If you're into tweaking software and like to install from source files, probably the best suited distro. I switched from SuSe because I was tired of all the SuSe-isms. Made it quite difficult to compile software on my own... But probably not for those expecting a lot of GUI tools.

People still buy books becase they like to turn the page.

  7. Stop Blaming the Media!!!! on Gaming Companies Being Sued Over Columbine · · Score: 1

As Chris Rock said, "WHAT ABOUT THE PARENTS? THE PARENTS SHOULD GO TO JAIL FOR SOME OF THIS SHIT!" These parents' need to stop blaming everyone but themselves for what their kids do. It's not the media's fault that their kids are so fucked up they don't know the difference of right and wrong! It's not the media's responsibility to raise these kids properly. If the parents' spent a little more time talking to their kids about their life and teach them to deal with life's difficulties, maybe these kids wouldn't pull a Columbine! Shit! I play the games they played. I listen to the music they listened to. I had a rough childhood. But did I go around shooting kids with my dad's gun? No! WHY? Because I knew better. Because my parents taught me how to deal with life. Before DOOM they blamed D&D for their kids hacking each other in the sewers! Sure playing these games and listening these music didn't help the situation, but it isn't their fault that these parents don't know how to raise they're kids. I know the lawsuit is being brought on by the family of the victims and not the parents of the killers. I understand it makes them feel better to blame people besides the killers' parents. It's because they'd like to think that something besides parents have caused this. That way even though they themselves may be bad parents their kids won't become killers as long as they keep them from the "evil" media. If you have to blame others besides the parents, blame society. Blame the society that has raised these parents. The society that makes these parents too busy to properly raise their kids. The society in which kids feel alienated by those that are popular. Blame your kids that made them feel like kids. Blame your kids that made them feel like killing to make a point. And then blame your role in this society. Stop wasting your time trying to purify the media. It would be more worth while to take that time and talk to your kids.
